SBRNYCU   MURPHY RULES - 2009:   January 24, 2009, Saturday,  0900 - 1545, at Norfolk Yacht and Country Club.   All you never thought you could know about the rules!  The focus of the clinic will be an interactive discussion of the racing rules with special emphasis on the rules changes that become effective this January.  Course instructor John McCarthy will explain all the important changes and work them into the "rules made easy format" he has used in the past, stressing understanding concepts rather than memorizing rules.
Topics will include:
*Basic Right-of-Way Rules,
*Total Re-write of Rule 18 (Mark Roundings),
*Additions to Rules on Obstructions,
*New Definitions, and a
*Special Section on Collisions, Protests, and Liability.
The fee, if received prior to January 1,  is $40 ( $35 for attendee's family member); after January 1st, it will be $45 per person.  Your registration fee includes morning refreshments, lunch, and course materials.  PRE-register by calling (757) 850-4225 or by email to mcbear@earthlink.net (include your name, address, and phone number and on the subject line put  MURPHY RULES).   This is an ideal opportunity for both skippers and people who crew.  It's not too soon to register - as of last week,  more than one-third of the available seats are gone.

PHRF OF THE CHESAPEAKE annual Board of Delegates Meeting, Saturday, November 8, 2008, at Annapolis Yacht Club.  If you have questions, Executive Secretary Stewart Buckler asks that you contact him at (410) 414-3270.  Delegate check-in begins at 0900 and meeting at 1000.  If you have specific concerns, you should let your club's delegate to PHRF or the Region 4 VP (Mike Dale) know immediately.  You can check out the meeting agenda at www.phrfchesbay.com   Remember, this is where PHRF class policies and procedures (equipment requirements, fleet splits, etc.) are determined; it is not the place for individual boat handicap issues - the PHRF Handicappers resolve those.

Fishing Bay Yacht Club Frost Bite Regatta was yesterday.  Brad Miller in Schiehallion won the BC Fleet (3 boats), and  Mike Dale, Juggernaut, took first in the Non-Spin (3 boats) fleet.  Brad Davis, Blade Runner , was the sole PHRF A boat on the course.  PRO  - Sharon Bauer.
On the Rappahannock  River:   Ron Mihills reports that " Rappahannock River Yacht Club successfully defended the Rappahannock Cup against Yankee Point Yacht Club on  Oct. 18 & 19.  Winds blew a good solid 20K+ with gusts on Saturday and 20K-25K on Sunday with gusts to 30K+, white caps everywhere, and very lumpy seas.  The conditions were so strong on Sunday that only AERWANA from YPYC and Jerry Latell’s BOOMERANG raced one spinnaker race.  Neither boat flew a spinnaker.  Jerry did not have reef points in his mainsail, so raced with only a jib upwind and two headsails downwind.    Now, that's some serious non-spinnaker racing!        Mike McCartney aboard MARIJO won the Rappahannock River Yacht Racing Fleet – Spinnaker High Point trophy and Pete Knight on SALUTE won the RRYRF – Non-Spinnaker High Point.

Closing Day Race Report
Offshore Racing Posted by Strother Scott on Tuesday October 28, @01:16PM

40D-3245a.jpg Last Saturday October 25, fourteen Offshore and Cruising boats had a wonderful pursuit race in 25-30 knot Southeast wind conditions. At the skipper’s meeting we decided it would be best to race inside Fishing Bay again, hoping to find some lee shores to protect the fleet. Because Mr. Roberts was already docked on the Fishing Bay side of FBYC, we decided to motor up the Piankitank River and set an orange mark in the middle of the Piankitank River just South of Bland Point. The skippers were told to expect a course with Mark Y – which would be the orange mark in the Piankitank River – and that they should go around Stove Point respecting all government marks both to the left and right as they went around Stove Point and up the river and on the return.

We were able to set Mark Y and get Mr. Roberts back to “B” for an on time start at 1100. We set a course of B A C B Y B - which sent the boats on a short beat to A, a close reach to C, and then a broad reach back to the start at B, and finally a circular course around Stove Point, up the Piankitank River, around Y and return to finish at the Start Mark B.

40D-3436.JPG A few boats set a chute on the third leg back to B, and likewise a few set chutes going up the river. Cat’s Pajamas was out in front going up the river and was able to substantially extend her lead with a spinnaker most of that long leg. As a result, no one was able to pass her, and she finished first – surfing downwind – wing and wing – to the Finish. Drake Johnstone said he had never seen conditions where a J-24 would surf wing and wing.

After the race, everybody enjoyed oysters cooked over the outdoor grill and in the kitchen and served about 10 different ways by Bonnie and Will Vest. The J105 Fleet 15 awarded its season trophies to 1. Mike Karn - Inevitable, 2. Brad Davis - Blade Runner, and 3rd David Clark - Corryvreckan. Finally, Commodore Ric Bauer presented the trophies for the Offshore Fall Series to the various winners.

2008 Closing Day Procedures
Offshore Racing Posted by Strother Scott on Thursday October 23, @06:09PM

I am now entering my fourth year as Race Chair for the Staggered Start Race. The first two years I had laid out many alternative courses, but then lost the notebook with the courses, and in 2007 we had a slightly revised system, which will be used again this year.

At the Skippers meeting to occur at the Flagpole at 9:30am on Saturday Ocober 25, 2008, I will hand out printed copies of this Spreadsheet. Please note it has 2 pages - one sheet is to be used if we start on time, the other if the start is to be delayed. The spreadsheet forces me to set courses with a length on exactly X miles - i.e. no fractions of miles.

I will announce that I anticipate setting a course that will include Mark Z as the next to last mark. If you look on the spreadsheet, you will note it says, "Anticipate a Finish at Mark Z and a "Shorten Course" signal. Z will be in the general line between the previous mark and the mark after Z"

That means that if I display a course for example, of A C H L C Z B, then you can anticipate finding Mr Roberts at anchor between C and B and you should finish a shortened course at Mark Z which is nearby - and B will not be a mark you need to pass. In that way, I have the flexibility to set any number of courses, and shorten the course on the last leg to an exact number of miles.

One other change from prior years - as we don't seem to have every Alphabetic Flag from A-L, I can't fly a flag to indicate the course length. Accordingly, I will post a letter board on the side on Mr. Roberts, near the Course letters, but probably slightly higher.

Please also note that your start occurs at an exact time, or, if we are delayed, an increment of time after the "Start Time". As a means to synchronize all watches so people will start on a coordinated basis, please adjust your watch to the time shown on the top left corner of the home page the moment you refresh it, or you can find a faster loading, more exact page at Exact Time .

I have set the time limit at 4:00PM, as the Oyster Roast begins at 5:00PM.

New FBYC Neckties in Club Store
Club News Posted by Noel Clinard on Tuesday October 21, @07:53PM

Both old and new tie designs are now available in the FBYC Store. These ties will be available at the Awards Banquet at the Virginia Museum on November 7 at the Virginia Museum. The new designs are modeled on ties from the same manufacturer for the New York Yacht Club and St. Francis Yacht Club. They feature the club colors of red or blue in a "rep" stripe design with one embroidered burgee between the stripes at the wide part of the tie, as pictured here. Also available is the traditional FBYC tie with multiple burgees on a navy blue background. The latter design is also now available in a limited number of bow ties. The price is $35 per tie, both long and bow ties.

Worth It For The Price
Club News Posted by Noel Clinard on Monday October 20, @04:54PM

In these uncertain times, it is nice to see a validation of our own self-interested justifications for what we spend on our boats and our membership in Fishing Bay Yacht Club. Happily, I think we can rest assured that, as the Club goes forward, its Leadership will weigh carefully each and every expenditure at Fishing Bay, but will also keep an eye on the things that really matter to us all. This article, found at http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/18/business/yourmoney/18money2.html?ei=5070&emc=eta1 says it well.

# 416 SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE
SBR News You Can Use Posted by McCarthy on Monday October 20, @04:54PM

Pride of Baltimore II  is first to finish at Thimble Shoal.  Virginia's  nemesis, The Pride, rolled down the Bay from Annapolis,  Thursday afternoon and through the night to  finish this year's Great Schooner Race at Thimble Shoal at 6:16:03 AM on Friday. Skipper Jan Miles won line honors as well as the AA Fleet on corrected time.  Our Virginia (skipper Hank Mosely) finished 2nd in the water at 8:30:36AM, but 4 in her fleet corrected on her with handicap times, pushing her to 6th once all the paperwork was done.

Web Navigation Changes Complete - at least for now.
Club News Posted by Strother Scott on Thursday October 16, @09:09AM

I am pleased to report that I have completed some changes to the FBYC Site Navigation.

On the horizontal navigation across the top of the page - the Link which is in use converts to a non-link - and is a different color. In that way, you can see what link you are on, and can not click on the Club Link, if you are already on the club link. (all true except for the Events link - which doesn't use a folder structure - so we keep the Events Link active no matter what Events page you are on.)

On the sidebar - the list of links has been shortened to only the sub-folders on the selected link. I think the shorter list is better. The selected sub-link stays highlighted.

So in the picture on the left, which was taken when I was on Club/Membership - you will see that Club in the top line has a white background and is not a link - and Membership on the sidebar is blue, meaning that is the page I was one.

If I can figure out how to do it, I may change the top line to show all the Links under Club and the rest when you move the mouse over the links - like you can see happens on http://www.yourunitedway.org/ or www.lumberliquidators.com

Please enjoy and keep the comments coming.
