Fishing Bay Yacht Club, in cooperation with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Virginia
Chapter, is hosting the 2001 Volvo Leukemia Cup Regatta on June 22nd and 23rd, 2001, in Deltaville, Va.
Open to all regional PHRF Skippers and their crews. Its two fold purpose is to raise funds for the
Leukemia & Lymphoma Society toward finding a cure for the dreaded disease of leukemia and
its related cancers - lymphoma, myeloma and Hodgkin’s disease, and to establish a major new
venue for Southern Chesapeake sailors.

53 boats compete - Fundraising reaches over $80,000

On Friday night at the silent auction at Stingray Harbor Marina , it was announced that the 2001 Southern Chesapeake Volvo Leukemia Cup had raised over $80,000. On June 23, 53 sailboats raced in 15-20 knot winds. The race committee set a full Olympic Course for the spinnaker classes and the races concluded just before intense rainsqualls hit the fleets. At the Gala on Saturday night – under continuing rain – the awards were presented by FBYC Commodore Strother Scott and SunTrust Virginia CEO C.T. Hill. In the Fundraising class, the top award went to Carolyn Schmalenborger, Len Scharf and Dr. Rip Radcliff who raised $31,000.

Paddle power is being added to the 3rd Annual Southern Chesapeake Volvo Leukemia Cup Regatta in 2001. The Virginia chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the regatta planning committee have announced a festive kayak-canoe tour will be included in this year’s event, being held June 22-23 in Deltaville, Virginia.
