Calling all sailors -- racers, cruisers and day-sailors... The 3rd Annual Southern Chesapeake Volvo Leukemia Cup Regatta is coming to Deltaville, Friday-Saturday, June 22-23. And, all hands are invited to join in the fun and help a great cause...
“Given the great welcome and success we enjoyed last year, we are extremely pleased to be asked to return to Deltaville,” says Pamela Stumpff, special events director for the Virginia Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. “We are extremely grateful to our volunteers, our sponsors and to the dedicated efforts of the members of Fishing Bay Yacht Club, who helped make the 2000 regatta such a huge success.” FBYC hosted the event in 2000 and is the host club again this year. Last year’s regatta attracted 88 sailboats, more than 600 participants and raised more than $78,000 for leukemia research and patient care.
“This year, we are hoping increased numbers of residents from the Middle Peninsula and the Northern Neck areas will want to participate,” says Stumpff. “We have a great line-up of activities slated for those who do take part, and we are inviting everyone to join us.”
New features this year include a Gary Jobson Sailing Review/Wine Tasting on March 23, a Junior Challenge Regatta Race at Christchurch School on the Rappahannock River on Saturday, May 5, and a Kayak Tour on the Rappahannock near Wake on Saturday, June 23.
Jobson Sailing/Wine-Tasting: Enjoy some classic Virginia wines and hear Gary Jobson recap the sailing races now taking place around the world. Gary will also preview the Volvo Ocean Race, which begins this fall, and sail into the Chesapeake in April of next year. The event will be take place at 7:00pm, Friday, March 23, at Trigon HW in Richmond. Tickets are $25.00.
Junior Challenge: The May 5 Christchurch Junior Challenge will involve young sailors from the Virginia Interscholastic Sailing Association (VISA) and other schools. In addition, youngsters from throughout the region are invited to take part. There is no registration fee, but the young sailors are encouraged to raise funds to help in the fight against leukemia and related blood cancers. If you know any young sailors who would like to take part, we would love to have them on board. (See registration information below.)
Kayak Tour: The Kayak Tour is being organized by Bay Trails Outfitters of Mathews County and supported by volunteers from the Friends of Dragon Run. The tour will take paddlers into Mill Creek off the Rappahannock. Kayakers are asked to bring their own boats, but a limited number of kayaks will be available. Registration is $50.00 for single-seater kayaks, $100.00 for tandems. The registration fee includes a ticket to the Welcome Reception and Grand Gala. .
Leukemia Cup Regatta Weekend: Most of the popular activities from last year are again planned for Leukemia Cup Regatta weekend in Deltaville, June 22-23. There will be a “fun”-oriented Junior “Sail-a-thon” for young people aged eight to 14 at FBYC on Friday, June 22, followed by a Welcome Reception and Silent Auction at Stingray Harbor Marina that evening. On Saturday, June 23, there will be a Skipper’s Breakfast, a VIP/Spectator Cruise and a series of PHRF, MORC and multi-hull sailboat races on the Chesapeake Bay east of Deltaville on Saturday morning. One-design classes will be added if there is sufficient interest. Since the regatta is sanctioned by CBYRA, racers will gain points toward their season totals. A highlight for cruising sailors is the Leukemia Cup Fleet in which participants take part in a “fun” race, while competing for racing and fundraising honors. Registration for fundraising boats is $100.00, $50.00 for non-fundraising boats.
Grand Gala/Awards Ceremony: Following the races on Saturday afternoon, there will be a festive Grand Gala and Awards Ceremony at Stingray Harbor Marina. This is a fun way to cap off the weekend with dinner, refreshments, music and dancing. Last year’s gala attracted an estimated 600 people and was a rousing success. Gala afternoon and evening also features an open house of new sailboats. The public is invited to attend the activities. There is no charge for admission, but dinner tickets cost $20.00 each.
A Great Cause: All proceeds from the regatta go to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. This year regatta officials hope to raise $100,000.
