Leukemia Cup Regatta Adding Festive Kayak Tour
Paddle power is being added to the 3rd Annual Southern Chesapeake Volvo Leukemia Cup Regatta in 2001. The Virginia chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the regatta planning committee have announced a festive kayak-canoe tour will be included in this year’s event, being held June 22-23 in Deltaville, Virginia.
The Kayak Tour, which is being organized and coordinated by Bay Trails Outfitters of Mathews County, will begin at 9:30am, Saturday, June 23, on the Rappahannock River near Mill Creek. Paddlers will assemble at the Wake launch ramp on Route 626 at the river. The tour will take paddlers into Mill Creek in the area of Parrot Island. Following the tour, participants will rendezvous for snacks and refreshments. Friends of Dragon Run, a conservation organization that supervises tours on the historic Dragon, has volunteered to provide guides to assist Bay Trails, with the event. It is hoped that as many as 100 kayakers will take part for a festive and challenging day on the water.
Participants are asked to bring their own boats, but with advance registration, a limited number of kayaks will be provided by Bay Trails at no charge. Registration fees are $50.00 for one-person kayaks and $100.00 for tandems. Those taking part are encouraged to solicit sponsors for their boat, and top fundraisers will receive prizes.
Registration fees include a ticket for the regatta’s Welcome Reception on Friday night, June 22, and for dinner at the Gala/Awards Ceremony on Saturday, June 23. Both events will be held at Stringray Harbor Marina in Deltaville. All kayaers are invited to attend the Saturday festivities in Deltaville.
“We are looking forward to welcoming these newcomers to our regatta,” says Pamela Stumpff, special events director for the Virginia chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. “And, this is a great way for people to enjoy a fun day on the water, while helping in the fight against childhood and adult leukemia and related blood cancers.”
Leukemia is the leading disease killer of children under 14 and it attacks 10 times more adults than children. The money that is raised in the regatta series goes for research and patient care. In recent years, medical research has helped to dramatically extend the lives of many leukemia patients, and the goal now is to find cures to add to treatment advances.
Last year’s Southern Chesapeake regatta attracted 88 sailboats, more than 600 people and raised more than $78,000. A fundraising goal of $100,000 has been set for 2001.
Besides the Kayak Tour during Regatta Weekend, there will be a CBYRA-sanctioned sailboat race, involving PHRF, one-design, MORC and cruising class boats, a Junior Sail-a-thon, a fun-filled Silent Auction, a VIP/Spectator Cruise, an Open-House featuring new sailboats, and music, refreshments and a huge dinner celebration during a Gala and Awards Ceremony Saturday night, June 23. The general public is invited to attend the Gala at no charge, but there is a $20.00 fee for dinner tickets.
