Fishing Bay Yacht Club’s racing programs and sailing activities are managed through four different fleets. The following is designed to provide general information about each Fleet. Offshore Division
The Offshore Division sponsors traditional sailboat racing for bigger sailboats.
The Offshore Division schedules sailboat races
beginning around April and continuing through October and November. Most of the races
are run in the Chesapeake Bay at the mouth of the Piankatank River
See Exhibit B from the back of the Sailing Events Book
although some races are of a longer
distance and include races across the Chesapeake and back, up to Smith Point and back,
and up the Rappahannock River, for example.
The boats in the division range from as small as 24’ though most are in the 29' - 45' range. The races are conducted under the various rating rules. PHRF is used for almost all races and all boats, and the MORC rule is used for qualifying boats under 30’ in length. Most of these boats have a crew size of at least 4 people, and some have as many as 10 people on board. Many people become involved at FBYC as crew long before they apply for membership. For those interested in crewing, please contact a skipper or member or use the Crew Finder on the home page.
We typically have 20-30 boats start in our normal offshore races. Click this link to see the various J-24 J-29s and J-105s registered with the Club and Yachts to see pictures of a number of the active boats. See Offshore Division for additional information. Cruising Division
See Cruising Division for additional information.
One-Design Division
The One-Design Division is the traditional sailboat racing for
smaller boats, typically sailed by one or 2 people, and generally launched each day from a
trailer or dolly. Most of our One Design Races are run in Fishing Bay -
See Chartlet and aerial photograph.
The One Design Division
runs a full season of races
, a Spring and a Fall Series,
and a series of regattas in the Summertime. By definition One Design means boats of a
similar type, so there is usually no rating system used.
The one-design fleets which are active at FBYC include two person boats: Flying Scot, Mobjack, Frontrunner , and 420 and one person boats: Optimist and Laser. To see the list of the One Design boats registered with the club, click Mobjacks, Optimist, Laser, or Front Runners See One-Design Division for additional information. Junior Division
The Junior Division
organizes sailing activities and training for those from ages 6-8 to 18.
The primary training activities are Opti-Kids for the youngest sailors and
Junior Week, which are both held in June. Throughout the summer, we hold
Junior Race Team sessions and the Race Team travels to regattas up and down
the Bay.
The full schedule
usually includes 2 Junior Regattas during the summer and special Regattas like the
2004 Optimist Atlantic Coast
Championships
and the
2005 Bay Open Championships and Junior Olympics.
Each summer the Junior Division hires coaches who work at FBYC for the summer teaching sailing to our Juniors. See Juniors for additional information. Race Committee and other support
Mr. Roberts serves as our primary Race Committee boat. It is about 40' long, has twin diesels,
and carries the 3-5 people needed for race committee duty. She is supported by 2 club owned outboards,
the Seacraft, a 18' skiff
primarily used as a mark boat - shown tied up behind Mr. Roberts and the Whaler - a 13' Boston Whaler
used for the Juniors and in Fishing Bay.
