2005 RACING PROGRAMS

The object of this association shall be the development of the art and science of sailing, the acquisition of knowledge of the theory and practice of seamanship, navigation, meteorology, aerodynamics, yacht design, and construction and allied subjects; and the furthering of this purpose by the promotion and encouragement of races, regattas and cruises........... FBYC Constitution, Article III

Offshore Division events will continue the trend over the last several years to balance drop-mark short races with longer and/or government mark races, including two night races to be included in an Offshore Distance Series consisting of Urbanna Race, the Point to Point Regatta (overnight both ways), Moonlight Regatta, and Wolf Trap Races. FBYC continues to support a growing non-spinnaker fleet with courses specifically tailored to racing without spinnakers. Our goal is to provide an opportunity for cruisers and racers to join together in some friendly competition and to visit some of our neighboring Southern Bay destinations. FBYC will continue to promote competitive racing for all Offshore Fleets and fully utilize the vast and accommodating Middle Bay Area. The tradition of strong participation by boats from other parts of the Chesapeake Bay in the Stingray Point and Leukemia Cup Regattas is expected to continue in 2005, and FBYC will once again be host to the J-29 Invitational Regatta that has in years past drawn the best in that class from all over.

One Design events will continue to follow the multi-race day format, with series races spread out over the spring and fall and interspersed with Offshore events to minimize conflicts for the sailors who race in both divisions. One Design fleets and racing at FBYC continue to grow, anchored in recent years by the Front Runner and Scot fleets. The steady growth of the Flying Scot fleet, the excitement around the 420's, a re-energizing of the Lasers, and the consistency of the Front Runner fleet hold promise of excellent participation this year. The Spring Series will carry into the month of June. July will host the Long Distance Race and Summer Sea Breezes. Our women skippers had so much fun in 2004 with a transition from a Portsmouth format to a One Design event raced in 420's that we've decided to repeat it in August 2005. Fall Series races are dispersed between several big One Design Regattas to include the 66th Annual One Design Regatta, the Laser Masters and Flying Scot ACC and Districts. After two years of hurricanes and other foul weather we have high hopes for a strong turnout for our Indian Summer Regatta held on the second weekend in October.

The Junior Division has put together a strong racing program for 2005, augmented by events designed to maximize use of the new 420s and to continue major championship sailing by FBYC Juniors. The Junior racers will be increasing the number of away regattas this year. The CBYRA Midgets Championships for 420s and Optis will be held at FBYC on July 8, 2005, and The Bay Open/Junior Olympic Festival will be held at FBYC on July 9 & 10, 2005. The former is a prestigious championship event and the latter is a large event sponsored by CBYRA and US Sailing and over 200 competitors are expected. Tom Coleman will conduct a Green Fleet at the Bay Open/JOs. Juniors attending the Bay Open/JOs may participate in the Leukemia Cup for Juniors. Before the kids return to school, the end of summer will be completed with a repeat of the popular Dog Days event for one day only. A two-day Indian Summer regatta will cap the Junior racing seasons. Unfortunately, the Byte is no longer supported in CBYRA Junior Sailing and the FBYC Byte Fleet is on probationary status.
