Coach Mike Karn with St. Christopher's/St. Catherine's Sailing Team Posted by Jere Dennison on Thursday May 15, @12:52PM Coach Mike Karn poses with his Saints sailing team at Christ Church School on May 10 after competing in the Leukemia Cup Junior Challenge. Although his team did not win the regatta, the Saints team was the second highest fundraising school with $3,110. All of the participating eight high school teams raised over $10,800, a new record for this event according to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Other teams included Christ Church School, Norfolk Collegiate, Poquoson High, Maury High, Walsingham Academy, Hampton Roads Academy, and Smithfield High. Norfolk Collegiate was the winner on the course in a tie-breaker with Christ Church. Mike is to be congratualated for his dedication to youth sailing and his support of the Leukemia Cup effort. LLS One Design Challenge, May 31, 2008 at FBYC Posted by Noel Clinard on Thursday May 08, @06:43AM The 10th season of Southern Chesapeake Leukemia Cup activities begins this month in Deltaville. New this year, the One Design Challenge on Saturday, May 31, was created to give one design sailors an opportunity to support the overall event with their own races and fund raising. This was discussed briefly at the skippers' meeting on the first day of the One Design Spring Series. Separate daily place awards, apart from Spring Series dailies, will be given to the winning Challenge entries of each sailboat class, as a function of the number of entries as usual. Races will be run simultaneously with the FBYC Spring Series, but separate results will be recorded for entering Challenge boats. To encourage participation and give experience to novice One Design racers, there will be a separate start for those who wish to have their first or early experiences on the starting line and around the buoys. This start will be a combined class start. Entrants to the novice race should print "Novice" in the memo line of their check. The starting signal for combined class novice race will be signal flags "L" and "S" for Leukemia Society. Skippers are asked to register, paying a Registration Fee of only $10 per boat. In addition, skippers are asked to consider raising funds, in any amount, from their families, friends and crew to help fund research and find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma. Prizes consisting of a set of 4 of the new 16 oz. FBYC Tervis Tumblers will be given to the top fundraiser and a set of 4 of the 12 oz. Tumblers will be given to the runner-up ( a $60 and $48 value, respectively). Novice racers and fundraisers are eligible for these top fundraising awards. Contributions and entry fees can be paid on site before the skippers meeting, or can be mailed to the Event Chair, Noel Clinard at 6010 York Road, Richmond, VA 23226. From now on, the pricing has increased $50 to $75 per event, and shown on the On-Line Entry Forms and on http://www.fbyc.net/Juniors/2008/RegistrationTable From now on, registration is available on a space available basis, and finally, all registration will be closed on May 15. Many thanks to those who have signed up by the deadline. It certainly eases the planning for these events. The fun starts with the Kayak Tour to be held again this year at the Deltaville Maritime Museum and Holly Point Nature Park from 9AM to Noon on Saturday, May 10. The launch site at idyllic Holly Park provides the perfect protected venue on Jackson Creek for this event while allowing convenient access to the big waters of Chesapeake Bay if conditions allow. This tour has become increasingly popular over the past years, and co-sponsor, Bay Trails Outfitters, will provide kayaks for newcomers and those without kayaks if you register early. Otherwise, bring your own kayak and gear. Equally a fundraising event, kayakers are encouraged to raise funds to help fund research and find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma. Waterfront Development at the Deltaville Maritime Museum Posted by Jere Dennison on Monday April 21, @11:21PM The Deltaville Maritime Museum at Holly Point Nature Park announces a major waterfront enhancement project. A substantial 240’ by 8’ pier encircling the shoreline restoration area implanted last year will be constructed through the generosity of seven local benefactors. Museum officials believe that the new pier will greatly augment the recreational and education missions of the museum. Not only will the pier offer expanded access for watercraft visiting Holly Point facilities through an exponential increase in dockage space but also will allow groups of educators, students, patrons, and visitors to study the shoreline restoration area from a safe and spacious platform enveloping the site. The seven donors who are making this project possible are: Allen & Frances Krowe, Bob & Erma Gary, Dieter & Mary Lib Hoinkes, Gene Ruark, Bob & Christie LeBoeuf, Bill & Elizabeth Perkins, and Tim Blackwood. The newest offering will be insulated drinking glasses custom made by Tervis Tumblers for FBYC and containing an embroidered insert of the FBYC burgee. These will be available in both short and tall glasses. Get yours while they last! The other offerings will include the usual polos, hats, sweatshirts, belts, ties, scarves, as seen at prior store sessions. The colors of some of these items will be new. All proceeds of sales by the FBYC Store are used to support club programs.
