Earlier this week David Hinckle, Ric Bauer and Mike Dale completed work on the laser rack to make way for the pool project. Here's a photo of the new slot rack which holds 13 lasers and is located along the fence near the junior shed.

The FBYC Laser Fleet would like to invite junior parents and any other sailors out for some evening racing Tuesday, June 20. Lasers, 420s and any other fleet with 3 or more boats are welcome. We'll get a lot of fun, informal races in with the first start just off the dock at 6pm. We'll have an informal skipper's meeting at 5:30 to review rabbit starts or whistle starts. We'll race until we run out of light or wind.
This event was a big success last year and we hope with all of the parents in town for junior week that this year will be just as good. If you don't have a laser, try to beg/borrow one of you can. It's a great opportunity to get on the water for some fun, non-competitive racing. We will have 3 club lasers available to be borrowed, contact Jon Deutsch if you want to use one. Last weekend Alain Vincey and Frank Murphy traveled to Palm Beach Sailing Center to attend the 2006 Jack Swenson Memorial Florida Laser Master's regatta. 39 boats were in attendance and they had some great weather. Write Up Results

Our March frostbiting has been moved up a week so as not to conflict with a district series event. The new date is 3/12. Our next frostbiting will be 2/19

Five laser sailors braved the cold temperatures to participate in the Laser Fleet Christmas Cup. John Hubbard, Alain Vincey, Frank Murphy, Rob Whittemore & Jon Deutsch. David Hazlehurst manned teh chase boat and took pictures. Frostbiting continues Sunday, January 15th. Happy Holidays!

Alain Vincey, John Hubbard and Frank Murphy sailed the first day of the frostbite series. It was warm day with a nice light breeze and they used the schooner Virginia as their turning mark in Fishing Bay. Next Frostbiting: December 18 @ 12: The Christmas Cup.

FBYC Laserfleet will be running a frostbite series once a month November - March. Dates are 11/20, 12/18, 1/15, 2/19 & 3/12. Start time is 12 noon (sharp) Courses will be a windward leware once or twice around. IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Sail at your own risk. Frostbiting is only for experienced laser sailors; Wet/Dry suit mandatory with proper accessories (gloves/boots/hat etc); No racing after 3pm; We will have use of a chase boat, but it will be anchored and possibly not staffed. LASER MASTER WORLDS Fortaleza, Brazil -- The final two races of the Laser Masters Worlds was sailed in 20 to 22 knots easing to 15 knots for the final race. In spite of the tropical air and warm sea temperatures, this has been one of the toughest Masters Championship ever held with no races under 15 knots and always big waves demanding total concentration.
The final standings in the 53-boat Masters Division were: 1. Murray Thom (NZL) 11 pts; 2. Peter Conde (AUS) 28; 3. 182048 Kurt Miller (USA) 38; 4. Gonzalo Campero (ARG) 44; 5. Vann Wilson (USA) 51; 6. Allan Clark (CAN) 60; 7. Tracy Usher, (USA) 563. Australia's Mark Bethwaite won the 29-boat Grand Masters division with an eleven point lead over Nicolas Loivingston (GBR), while Australia's Kerry Waraker edged Peter Seidenberg (USA) for the Great Grand Masters title. FBYC's last big one-design sailing event of the year, the Indian Summer Regatta, is this weekend October 8-9. We are expecting a good turn-out, so don't miss it.

Mother Nature was smiling down on Deltaville Virginia this weekend with beautiful conditions while Laser Masters sailors competed in the 24th Annual Chesapeake Bay Laser Masters Championship. Eighteen sailors got in 9 races in two days to sail for the championship in 10-15 knot breezes and sunny skies throughout the weekend.

FBYC's Fall Series (yes, I know it's still August) started up this past Sunday with 8 boats competing the light but steady winded conditions. Mark Saunders consistency and boat speed paid off and he took bullets in 3 out of 4 of the races. Bill Warren won the other race and Rob Whittemore and Jon Deutsch followed close behind in 2,3 and 4th place respectively.
The first race was a solid hour race on a 2-mile course out in the middle of the River. The 2nd race was shorter, but both races were all about playing the shifts. By the 3rd and 4th races the shiftiness was gone and gains were gotten only by finding more wind. The rest of the fleet of Alain Vincey, David Porter, Frank Murphy, and Tim Oksman all sailed well and kept the races very tight. Thanks go to Alex Alvis for running the race committee.

At the Annual Regatta each fleet needs volunteers to help man the beer concession and sell t-shirts from 7:30pm to 10pm on Saturday. If you could take a 30-minute shift and help out please let me know. You're help will be greatly appreciated.

We had a great turnout for the Summer Sea Breeze this past Saturday. We got a total of 12 boats on the water, with five new and/or renewed Laser sailors among them. With a combination of new and renewed boats, Ric Anderson, Tim Feehan and Tad Thompson were there for both the clinic and the follow-on sailing. Eric Powers was there for the racing - we need to find him a boat, if there are any boats for sale out there. A newcomer, Dan Herlihy, joined us for the race, and does not know that we were nice to him and let him get a third. The results are posted. And, as promised, we did let the new guys beat us. I was a little more accomodating than some of my fellow Laserdudes.
Thanks to Jere and Clark Dennison, Jon Deutsch, James Jacob, Brad Squires and Alain Vincey for helping to make the rigging clinic successful. Especially Brad and Jon, since they got there at 11am to sweat in the 90 degree sun while rigging.
The only challenge to the day was the wrongly-named breeze. It was more aptly tagged the "Cumulo nimbus thunderstorm fuel breeze". After one race that saw winds from about 270 degrees of the compass and varying in intensity from 1 knot to 16, we were just about to start a second race (where I was not going to be so nice to the newcomers), when thunder came from up the Piankatank. Boats headed so quickly for the exits you would have thought it was quitting time at the DMV. Just enough racing to spawn some need for refreshment ashore.
Looking forward to a strong turnout at summer seabreeze II on Sat. Jul 30th. Skipper's meeting at 2pm, racing at 3pm.

For anyone who is interested in either racing or just tips on how to rig and sail your boat more efficiently, Brad Squires and Mike Toms will be available at 11am on Saturday, July 16. They will start with rigging tips, move to some land drills and finish up with some on the water action. The Chesapeake Bay Open Junior Laser Championship was hosted by Fishing Bay Yacht Club July 9-10. Christopher Kohlhafer from Severn Sailing Association was the leader edging out 2nd place finisher Lauren White from Ware River Yacht Club by a point. Sara Flowe of Hampton Yacht Club followed in 3rd. In the Radial division Sara Flowe finished first followed by T. David Krohe and Andrew Watson. They sailed 8 races in moderate to light winds on the heel of tropical storm Cindy. 9 boats participated.RESULTS PHOTOS PHOTOS

Monday's Long Distance race saw great conditions with 2 lasers duking it out with the bigger boats in the mouth of the Piankatank River. Jon Deutsch sailing a full rig laser and Brad Squires in a Laser II competed against Front Runners, Mobjacks and Flying Scotts. The course took the fleet from the shore opposite Fishing Bay, around Stove Point to the chanel markers for Jackson Creek and back. Meg Roberts with her crew Tom Roberts in a Mobjack ran away with it. Complete results to be posted to the FBYC site in the near future.

Saturday June 11 was the last and final day of the FBYC Spring Series and it was clearly the best day of the year. Bright sunny skies with 12 knot breezes. Five boats were out there, including newcomer Ron Jenkins, who all competed and enjoyed the beautiful weather. Jon picked up his first bullet of the year in the first race as well as Clark Dennison who won two of the races. Finishing strong in every race was Brad Squires who won the last. Jere Dennison and Ron were not far behind in what was pretty tight racing.
So that completes FBYC’s 2005 Spring Series. We started out with breeze and ended with a beautiful day with several good sailing days in between. We had a total of 10 different sailors out there and lasers raced on 4 out of the 5 race days. Brad and Jon sailed on all of the days and were 1-2 respectively. Jere made 2 days and finished 3rd. Participation in lasers is up from last year, but now that it’s summer and nice out, let get some more on the line in upcoming events. The Chesapeake Bay Masters at FBYC is only a couple months away and it’s never too early to get tuned up. For complete series results click here.

Saturday's shifty challenging conditions greeted 5 laser sailors who tested their light-air technique and their patients in the 4th day of the Spring Series. Jere Dennison's un-matched boat speed kept him at or near the front the entire day. Brad Squires, Mike Schmidt, Jon Deutsch and Mike Toms were often right there sparing with him and each other.
The shifty conditions and long course kept everyone on their toes. But thanks to the lack of chop it wasn't nearly as frustrating as some days like this typically are. The starting line was plenty long enough for twice as many boats, but for some reason in the 3rd race the pin-end turned into a log jam with all 5 boats right on top of each other. The knot of current and wind angle made it impossible to lay the line on starboard. In the end Jere finished first; Brad beat Mike S on a tie-breaker for 2nd and Jon and Mike T rounded out the fleet.

This week started out on Tuesday with one of the best nights of sailing yet. The steady 8-10 knot breeze was perfect for John Hubbard, Alain Vincey and Jon Deutsch to get in 12, fifteen minute rabbit-start races around our spectator fleet of anchored cruiser boats. The racing was tight and it was anyone's race down to the wire. After 2 hours of sailing we hit the beach and David Hazelhurst had a piping hot dinner ready for us in the club house. David, we really appreciated it.
Spring Series #3 was held on Sunday with another 3 lasers participating. Once the winds settled down the first race was more of a drag race than anything else which Brad Squies took the checker. The second race was square and Brad's ability to point so high kept Jon Deutsch and Rob Whittemore from ever quite catching him. In the final race the fluky winds returned and Brad ran away with it while Rob and Jon traded places downwind with Rob taking the line. Brad had the low score on the day and has taken the Series lead from Alain.

The Spring Series got off to a breezy start with 3 lasers duking it out. Alain Vincey, Brad Squires and Jon Deutsch gave it their all in the difficult conditions. To highlight how breezy it was, you were more likely to see a Front Runner, Flying Scott or Mobjack on it's side than you were a Laser. Alain won all 4 races followed by Brad and Jon. Tuesday Racing continues this week and the Next Spring Series is Sunday, May 15.

This weekend several FBYC Laser sailors made the trip to SSA's Sunshine Open. The 51 boat fleet included Alain Vincey, John Hubbard and James Jacobs. This Saturday, April 16, will be a day of tune-up sailing. We'll plan to arrive at the club around 10 and be on the water by 11. We'll do some drills, pratice starts and do some very short races. We'll stay close to the dock and just get out there to get the cobwebs out. If you can make it, or might be coming, please email Jon (jon-fbyc@jdeutsch.com, 804-305-1244) and let him know.
If you don't have a boat, come anyway. I'm sure at least 2 out of the 3 club boats will be sailable and we should be able to borrow/loan boats as well. Dress warmly with at least a ball cap, sailing gloves, dinghy boots, and long spray pants, jackets. Wet/dry suit won't be absolutely necessary but is highly recommended... We'll stay close to shore, so if you do take a swim you can get back to the club and get in front of the fireplace. We will have use of a chase boat too.
Last week a couple sailors got out there for 8 short Windward-Leward races in SSE winds around 10 knots. The group debriefed over a few drinks at Taylor's restaurant. TONIGHT (and every Tuesday) they'll be out there again... let Alain (anvincey@comcast.net) know if you are planning on being there. Be on the water at 6.

Tuesday night Laser sailing begins this Tuesday, April 5 and will continue throughout the summer. We will start at 6pm and race from the FBYC beach to the designated starting area, government marker, or other suitable pre-selected marker with consideration of the weather conditions. There will be a 1-minute countdown to a rabbit start sequence. Sailors will rotate being the rabit and will take turns setting the weather mark as necessary. Races will be Windward-Leward-Windward or about 15 minutes max. Thank Alain Vincey for getting this organized, you'll see him along with John Hubbard, Dave Porter and Jerry Dennison out there, so come on our and join them. The 2005 schedule is currently in the works. FBYC will be hosting its usual gamut of events spring through fall including the
spring series, summer sea breeze, annual regatta, and fall series. Also planned are the Chesapeake Laser Masters Regatta in mid
to early September. Stay tuned for more information.
Also in the works for the 2005 pre-season are a few tune-up frost bite events. More to come on this, send your suggestions to Jon.
