2010 CRUISING DIVISION INFORMATION

The 2010 Cruising Division schedule offers a variety of destinations for both families with young children to the blue-water sailor. The Chesapeake Bay has always been one of the best cruising waters in the US and we anticipate taking full advantage of this opportunity and to even stretch a bit for offshore sailing. The primary objective is to provide a schedule in which everyone can participate and enjoy the “Cruising Lifestyle.” Please consult the EVENTS section below to see how our destinations will appeal to both new and seasoned cruisers.

For families, especially those with young children, we have shorter weekend cruises to Mathews Yacht Club, Tides Inn, and we are bringing back the “Pirate Invasion” at Little Bay. We will try a “Captain’s Choice” cruise each month with a potluck dinner on Friday night. We can set our destination to match wherever the wind blows on Saturday. The objectives of these Captain’s Choice cruises are: 1) to bring back some “marina life” to the club and 2) to do more actual sailing to shorter destinations in order that any size boat can participate. For the more aggressive sailors, we will be doing a three-phase, two week cruise. The primary group will be doing a circumnavigation of the Delmarva. The secondary group – those not going offshore - will meet the circumnavigators in the upper Bay for short hops to popular destinations meeting the third group at St. Mary’s for the July 4th celebration. Hopefully, the schedule provides appeal to any level of sailing interest.

Again this year, the Cruising Division will participate in the FBYC Training Schedule by hosting a “Safety-at-Sea” Seminar. This all day course at the FBYC clubhouse will focus on practical applications of obtaining weather information at sea, the latest and greatest of electronics, practical medical emergency tactics, helicopter rescue, man overboard and offshore sail selection. The emphasis will be on practical applications.

Your cruising chairmen follow guidelines for the conduct of a successful cruise. They are listed here:

  • Keep an accurate record of your out-of-pocket expenses (with receipts) incurred on behalf of the club, and submit these to Joe Schott for re-imbursement from our club treasurer.
  • During the 6 weeks prior to departure, use every available FBYC communication tool to announce your event, briefly updating the activities and itinerary, and reiterating how members can sign-up through you or the website or both. These tools include: a) website announcements, b) e-mail blasts to the division by Mary Spencer, and c) articles and announcements in the Log. Remember that the Log announcements must be submitted to the Log Streamer, Ted Bennett (tbennett@ideaweavers.com), by the 20th of the preceding month in order to make the publication deadline.
  • Provide a summary of your event to the website within a week after you return. Remember to include high quality (not condensed for email or website) digital photos if feasible. Photographs for the Log should be limited to a few of your best representing the cruise, and they should be sent via email to the Log Streamer. Try to include information on participation and highlights of the trip. Your website summary will be used as part of the Division’s final report to the Board in November.
  • Think ahead and watch the weather. You can prevent a poor turnout by keeping your cruisers abreast of weather related changes in plans during the week prior to departure.
  • Above all, remember to assign a VHF channel for communications during the cruise and share cell phone numbers as a back up. The Cruise Chair may want to furnish a spreadsheet or word document to all participants containing information about the participants, i.e. boat names, sizes, drafts, times joining the cruise, etc. Keeping in touch is important for purposes of safety, convenience and collegiality.

Please register at www.fbyc.net

for each event and be sure to call the trip leader with any questions about the specific event that you plan to attend. We hope to see you on the water.
