2010 RACING PROGRAMSThe object of this association shall be the development of the art and science of sailing, the acquisition of knowledge of the theory and practice of seamanship, navigation, meteorology, aerodynamics, yacht design, and construction and allied subjects; and the furthering of this purpose by the promotion and encouragement of races, regattas and cruises……….. FBYC Constitution, Article III In 2010, we celebrate 71 years of racing and cruising
at FBYC, with our usual full slate of events plus the 2010 USODA
Nationals and the Hampton One Design Nationals: Offshore Division
events will again consist of 3 major club series: Spring series (five
race days this year), Fall series, and the Long Distance series. In
addition, four stand-alone club events have been scheduled. The Urbanna
Race has been removed from the Distance series and restored to its
traditional position as a club-wide standalone event. Opening day will
again be the same weekend as the first day of Spring Series. Although
the season will officially end with the staggered start race on Closing
Day, a day of Frostbite racing is scheduled the following weekend for
those not ready to put the boat away. FBYC will again be helping host
the Leukemia Cup Regatta in July, offering two days of racing and a
chance to contribute to a worthy cause. The Stingray Point Regatta,
still going strong after 15 years, is expected to again attract a
strong contingent of racers from around the over Labor Day weekend to
race for the Brent Halsey Jr. Memorial Trophy and the Potts Challenge
Trophy. Based on the level of interest in racing by cruising sailors
who don’t want to convert their boats form cruing boats to racing boats
but are interested in getting in on the rascing fun – as evidenced by
turnout of non-PHRF cruising boats in the Leukemia Cup and at Southern
Bay Race Week - the Offshore Division will be offering starts for a
Cruising Class of boats with handicaps assigned by FBYC in all of the
season’s major events. Participation of FBYC boats in regattas and
series around the bay and beyond continues to be strong, and our racing
schedule this year has been arranged to allow boats wanting to
participate in the resurrected Down The Bay Race to do so without
having to give up club series racing. One Design Division Spring Series will start in late April and extend through the end of May. The Summer Seabreeze season will kick off over a full 4th of July weekend of racing, with the first Summer Seabreeze race on Saturday, and the annual Long Distance race on Sunday, July 4. A second Summer Seabreeze race will be held at the end of July. The Annual One Design Regatta turns 71 in 2010, and a large turnout is expected to be on hand for the celebration, which will also feature the Hampton One Design National Championships. The Sail Against SIDS returns for a fourth year, at the Indian Summer Regatta in October, and FBYC will again host the Laser Masters in October. Fall will close with a One Design Closing Day event on October 24.. In order to accommodate the ever-growing number of FBYC One Design racers who travel to race elsewhere, a conscious effort has been made in arranging this year’s schedule to keep our racers from having to choose between competing in club series and participating in regattas hosted by other clubs during our season. Junior Programs The FBYC Junior Programs have continued to evolve and FBYC’s racing juniors have become a regular presence not only on the Chesapeake Bay but across the country and around the world. The 2010 summer program will include five major components designed to accommodate a wide range of ages (6-17), varying sailing skills and abilities, and individual goals: Opti Kids and Junior Week will provide the entry level teaching platform for young sailors, and, Opti Development Team, Opti Race Team, and Laser Race Team will give those juniors wanting to expand their horizons the skills and opportunities to do so. Our Junior Opti sailors won’t have to travel this year in order to participate in the Optimist National Championship Regatta, but will be the hosts: it will be held in Deltaville, hosted by FBYC in July. Our world class coaching staff – anchored by a coach of the Argentine Olympic team and a U.S. Opti Team coach- and the quality our club resources – boats, junior program staff, and volunteers – assure our junior sailors a memorable year of sailing and racing. RACE DAY ORGANIZATIONOur racing (and other) events are managed by members who agree
to serve as Chairs, and recruit sufficient volunteers to help carry out
their responsibilities. Responsibilities of the individual event
chairperson assignments are as follows: Event Chair: Event
Chairs have overall responsibility to plan, market, staff and manage
all aspects - except the racing itself - of our larger and non-sailing
events. For regular race days, we only have a Race Chair and a Social
Chair. Race Committee Chair:
The Race Committee Chair is the Principal Race Officer for the
day’s/regatta’s racing and is responsible for running the Race
Committee and ensuring that the racing is conducted in accordance with
the General and Special Sailing instructions. The Race Committee Chair
is also responsible for ensuring race results are turned in to the One
Design Div Lt Cmdr for scoring, appointing a protest committee, if
needed, and presenting awards following most events. The Race Committee
Chair is expected to recruit an adequate number of assistants to
operate and staff the signal and mark boats. Junior Race Committee Chair:
Junior Race Committee Chairs runs the Junior Race courses. Social Chair: For the typical weekend series race, where there is no Event Chair assigned, the Social Chair is responsible for after-race refreshments: generally soft drinks, beer, and snacks. For larger events, the Social Chair works with the Event Chair, taking responsibility for food, beverages, and entertainment, and is responsible for lining up volunteers to assist as needed to take care of the social activities for the event. |
