Cruising Cruising Division2006 CRUISING DIVISION INFORMATIONListed below are the cruises scheduled for 2006. Many events are recognizable as reliable destinations that are frequented regularly. Several are less familiar and deserve comment. The July 15 cruise to the York River is prompted by a special invitation from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science which is offering tours of its waterfront facility and labs exclusively for FBYC members. The August short trip to the Tides Inn during the peak of the summer heat is designed to be a ìsprint to luxuryî. The Family Cruise, introduced in recent years to provide another shorter destination, is a convenient way for large families and smaller boats to be involved. The offshore cruise along the coast of Maine is an opportunity for FBYC cruisers to rendezvous with familiar faces during their summer abroad from the Chesapeake Bay. ìCruising the Gunkholerís Wayî chaired by Nica and Jeremy Waters is more than a whimsical title. Nica and Jeremy have years of live-aboard experience on their Bristol Channel Cutter CALYPSO and much to teach the weekend cruiser about self reliance when the shore amenities disappear. Finally, the one week fall cruise goes to an area not recently visited by the Cruising Division - the communities of the Choptank River on Marylandís quietly classy Eastern Shore. Getting there requires layovers in Crisfield and Solomonís and a few long legs of sailing, but the rewards are relaxing evenings on the Tred Avon River, access to Oxford and St. Michaels, and all that goes with it. In addition to these Cruising Division events, we ask cruisers to be involved in spring cleanup weekend, all Leukemia Cup events, and the Stingray Point Regatta as volunteers or race participants. These events enhance the image of FBYC in our community or provide a way for sailing to be a venue for charitable fund raising, and, as such, benefit all of us. We also urge cruisers to participate in the FBYC Distance Series, the season ending Closing Day Regatta, as well as our own Cruise Regatta. These races feature longer reaches around government marks and are suitable for large shorthanded cruising boats. The non-spinnaker fleet could use a little boost! The following guidelines are offered to help our cruise event volunteer chairmen in their responsibilities:
1) Keep an accurate record of your out-of-pocket expenses (with receipts) incurred on behalf of the club, and submit these to George Burke for re-imbursement from club treasurer Paul Howle (Burke has copies of the clubís reimbursement form on request). 2) During the month prior to departure use every available FBYC communication tool to announce your event, briefly describing the activities and itinerary, and how members can sign-up (thru you or the website or both). These tools include: a) website announcements. b) e-mail blasts to the division by Mary Spencer. c) articles and announcements in the Log. Remember that the Log announcements must be submitted to Log Streamer Vic DeNunzio by the 20th of the preceding month in order to make the publication deadline. 3) Provide a summary of your event to the website within a week after your return. Remember to include high quality (not condensed for email or website) digital photos if feasible. Photographs for the Log should be limited to a few of your best representing the cruise and then sent via email to the Log Streamer Vic DeNunzio. Try to include information on participation and highlights of the trip. Your website summary will be used as part of the Divisionís final report to the Board in November. 4) Think ahead and watch the weather. You can prevent a poor turnout by keeping your cruisers abreast of weather related changes in plans during the week prior to departure. 5) Above all, remember to assign a VHF channel for communications during the cruise and share cell phone numbers as a back-up. The Cruise Chair may want to furnish to all participants a spreadsheet or word document containing information about the participants (e.g. boat names , sizes, drafts, times joining the cruise, etc.). Keeping in touch is important for purposes of safety, convenience and collegiality. Please register at www.fbyc.net for each event; be sure to call the trip leader with any questions about the specific event that you plan to attend. We hope to see you on the water.
