Development Race Team

3. Race Development Team Beginning Race training for new racers - all summer long

Race Development Team is for beginning sailors who want to take their sailing to a higher level. Participants will sail in Optimists and will be instructed by a qualified coach. Training Sessions will be scheduled throughout the summer, Fridays, Saturdays Sundays except when racing event schedules dictate otherwise. Sailors will travel with a coach and parents to attend several local regattas and one regional or natioinal event.

The cost for (for members who register and pay by the deadline) is $300. (Non-member cost is $400 by deadline)

Housing is available for most of the summer at Christchurch School. See Housing.

As part registration for Race Development Team, parents are required to volunteer for at least two events this season. They can for example choose to carpool kids from/to Richmond on two days, or chaperone several kids through a regatta or two.

All Junior sailors interested in racing are welcome to participate several ways:
  • Junior Week - 5 days of training - join one of the Racing Classes
    1. Racing Opti Class - bring and sail your own Optimist.
    2. Racing Laser Class - bring and sail your own Laser - or borrow one of the Club Lasers.
    3. Racing 420 Class - sail with another Junior - as skipper or crew - in one of the Club's 420s.
  • Race Team Extended described below - up to 30 additional days of training after Junior Week
  • Race Development Team described below - up to 20 additional days of training after Junior Week
  • Coaching by Appointment - available with Development Team coach on selected days at daily or hourly rates ($15/hr)
  • Clinics Friday June 20 afternoon High Performance Race Clinic; Sunday June 29 Team Racing Clinic;(Optimist, 420, Laser and Laser Radial

Race Development Team Program:

Race Development Team Program members also typically begin with Junior Week (June 16-20th - separate fee) but continue their classroom and on-the-water training through till mid July (27th). This program is for beginning racers and consists of basic training on and off the water in regularly scheduled classes. The Optimist dinghy is used for this class. Subjects covered include basic racing rules, starts, signals, upwind and downwind strategy, mark roundings and finishes. The post-Junior Week program includes coaching at regional and national race events.

Regattas

The Race Team Extended Program participants will attend a number of Regattas - both at FBYC and away. Juniors who are not in the Race Team Extended Program may also attend the Regattas. Coaching for Non-Race Team members will be available for everyone attending regattas at a rate of $50/day. The Regattas require significant Parental involvement, particularly on the away events. We need car pool drivers, chaperones, safety and observer boats, etc.
