2007 FBYC Junior ProgramOur goal for FBYC’s 2007 Junior Program is to bring summer sailing to a higher level of participation and enjoyment for all of our juniors by promoting improved sailing skills, safety, sportsmanship and camaraderie. The program is designed to address the needs of all our children from their first class in beginning Optimist through competitive sailing in Optimist, 420s and Lasers at regional, national events. Although Junior Week continues to be a core event for the program early in the summer, it is only one part of a larger program designed to get kids on the water and sailing the entire summer. We will offer several programs for Juniors in the Summer of 2007:

The CIT ProgramEach year CIT's provide invaluable assistance to the staff and learn leadership, teaching and coaching skills under the tutelege of our professional coaches. Motivated, experienced junior sailors ages 16 and older are welcome to submit their sailing resume and apply for one of our Coach in Training positions. Please contact Eric Powers for more details if you are interesting working with younger Juniors and pursuing this opportunity to build your sailing resume.Parent and Volunteer SupportThere’s lots of room for parent volunteers to pitch in to help us with many aspects of the program. Parents are an integral part of junior sailing and are needed to support and coordinator various aspects of the program. Parents should view this as an excellent opportunity to spend time with their children as they progress through the most special time in their early sailing careers. This is also a great opportunity for parents to socialize with their fellow volunteers at FBYC and some of the best sailing venues on the Bay.
Check-in
Check-in will be for the purpose of collecting laggard medical and liability forms, and any outstanding payments. The required forms will be mailed in late May to persons submitting an application or made available on the website and we will ask you to return them by mail. Important Car Pooling ProgramIn 2007 we would like to see a large number of our Juniors at the championship events, traveling to events around the Bay and at our home regattas. We would also like to see more Juniors at the club on a regular basis after Junior Week. To facilitate this, a number of parents have expressed an interest in developing a “car pooling” network to transport our Juniors from Richmond to away regattas and to FBYC for practice sessions. The idea is to get a group of parents who would each take one or two days during the summer to transport our Juniors from Richmond to where ever they need to sail. Again, the purpose of the network would be to provide transportation to regattas AND regular practice sessions at the club. We encourage you to consider being involved in this transportation network even if your Junior is not interested in sailing in regattas and just needs a ride to the club during the week to practice. Even before registration for the Junior Program we hope to get a response from all the parents who would like to be involved or have any interest in this type network so we can begin to plan and organize the program. We are asking all of you to please take a minute and respond by email to Eric Powers at eric.powers@mma1.com or phone Home Voice: 804-706-1427 Cellular: 804-363-5553. We look forward your suggestions and comments, and we look forward to seeing all of you in Fishing Bay. New Housing ProgramFBYC’s Junior Program is also pleased to present a housing new program designed to provide working parents an alternative to making frequent trips to Deltaville so their kids can participate in junior sailing. We have developed this program in cooperation with Christchurch School who already runs boarding camps from their facilities located off Highway 33 just east of Saluda. The school is able to provide our sailors with daily housing, meals and transport to and from FBYC from June 18th till July 14th including Junior Week (June 18-22nd) and then on a more limited basis from July 30th until August 17th (blackout 6-9th).Our kids would spend their days at FBYC practicing their racing skills or learning to sail and then return by bus to Christchurch in the late afternoon to end their day with dinner at the school cafeteria and fun with their evening programs (games, movies, music). Each morning, they will rise, have breakfast and get on the bus back to FBYC to join their sailing classes or on regatta days, be picked up by parents to travel to away regattas. Christchurch will make sure kids are fed, cleaned up and in bed at a reasonable hour and supervised during their time on campus. A boxed lunch is provided for them to take with them to FBYC each day. On days when there is no sailing classes at FBYC (such as Mondays) Christchurch will provide our kids with the opportunity to participate in their choice of ongoing summer camp activities such as fishing trips, crew boating and marine science programs. The cost for this is a very reasonable at $50 per day (al la carte) or $250 per seven-day week (Sunday afternoon till Saturday evening).
