2007 FBYC Junior Program

Our goal for FBYC’s 2007 Junior Program is to bring summer sailing to a higher level of participation and enjoyment for all of our juniors by promoting improved sailing skills, safety, sportsmanship and camaraderie. The program is designed to address the needs of all our children from their first class in beginning Optimist through competitive sailing in Optimist, 420s and Lasers at regional, national events. Although Junior Week continues to be a core event for the program early in the summer, it is only one part of a larger program designed to get kids on the water and sailing the entire summer.

We will offer several programs for Juniors in the Summer of 2007:

The Junior Division has been asked to cover most of its expenses this year out of Junior Division revenues. In order to fund the ever-improving Junior Program and stay competitive in hiring with other clubs, it has been necessary to increase the tuition for some of our most popular programs.

2007 Junior Program Descriptions - Detailed Information

1. Opti Kids The Blue Track above
Opti Kids will consist of 4 sessions, either mornings or afternoons, on two consecutive weekends: June 9-10 and 16-17, 2007, for young beginners, ages 6 to 8. Sailors will learn basic boat handling, boat set-up, boat safety and basic sailing. This is a great opportunity for parents to become familiar with the Optimist dinghy as well and they’ll get to spend some fun time on the water with their children. The cost is $150 and parent participation in the water is required each day. Boats are provided by FBYC.

When you register on-line you will be asked to select Beginning Opti Kids or Advanced Opti Kids. Beginning is for first-timers and will meet in the mornings; and Advanced is for the more experienced Opti Kids and will meet in the afternoon. The form also asks the name of your boat - put in a name if you can bring one, or None if you do not have one.

2. Junior Week The Red Track above
Junior Week will be June 18-22 for Juniors age 7 to 17 and will consist of classes for Beginning Opti, Intermediate Opti, Racing Opti, Racing 420/Laser and Group Sailing for teens who wish to sail with crew. This is a great way for Juniors to kick-off their sailing season with lots of time learning sailing on and off the water, hanging with their friends and spending time with their parents. Kids completing Opti Kids that want to continue their training may join Beginning Opti at Junior Week the following week or continue on with our Learn to Sail program the following week.

The cost for Junior Week is $275 and a parent or guardian must be on site during the program. Coaches for Junior Week will include three professional Coaches including Luis "Dingo" Canuto (420/Lasers), Diego Ravecca (Racing Optimist), and Tommy Coleman (Intermediate Optimist).

Housing is available during Junior Week at Christchurch School. See Housing.

Daily Schedule

More details will be provided in the enrollment package sent to registrants, but note that Junior Week classes are from 9:00 am to Noon, and from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Lunch on your own is to be supervised by parents.

3. Junior Week plus The Learn 2 Sail Program The Purple Track above
The Learn to Sail Program is for kids that want to stick close to home but still have the opportunity to get out on the water for some supervised sailing and basic instruction from our Senior Coach in Training. Choose from any of the six sessions available between 6/27 & 8/5. The programs runs from 9:30AM to 3:30PM. The cost for each five day session is $150. Housing is available for most sessions at Christchurch School. See Housing.

The CIT Program

Each year CIT's provide invaluable assistance to the staff and learn leadership, teaching and coaching skills under the tutelege of our professional coaches. Motivated, experienced junior sailors ages 16 and older are welcome to submit their sailing resume and apply for one of our Coach in Training positions. Please contact Eric Powers for more details if you are interesting working with younger Juniors and pursuing this opportunity to build your sailing resume.

Parent and Volunteer Support

There’s lots of room for parent volunteers to pitch in to help us with many aspects of the program. Parents are an integral part of junior sailing and are needed to support and coordinator various aspects of the program. Parents should view this as an excellent opportunity to spend time with their children as they progress through the most special time in their early sailing careers. This is also a great opportunity for parents to socialize with their fellow volunteers at FBYC and some of the best sailing venues on the Bay.

  • Carpooling/Chaperones (Extended Programs) - Getting the kids to practices at FBYC and to regattas requires parents to chip in and coordinate transportation from Richmond to FBYC or other points. Since practices are during the week and regattas are on weekdays and weekends, it is important to coordinate transportation and chaperones to make sure kids get to and from their events with minimal effort.
  • Housing (Extended Programs) - It is helpful for members with housing near FBYC or racing venues to provide overnight housing for kids. This reduces both time and costs for busy parents. Plus its fun for kids to spend after hours time with their friends. This year, we also have a cooperative agreement with Christchurch School to provide housing, meals and transportation for FBYC Juniors between June 15th and July 15th but we'll still need parents of the day.
  • Power Boat Operations - Insure boats are launched, moored and refueled each day and operational.
  • T-shirt Distribution - Insure T-shirts are distributed to the various sections on the last day of instruction for Opti Kids, Junior Week and Race Team.
  • Photographer - Takes ‘action shots’ of students during instruction. Make photos available to parents during the class session. Arrange for group photo for OptiKids, Junior Week and Race Team participants, and make available to members at their expense.
  • Social - Coordinate and execute any social activity chosen! Acquire and insure secure distribution of daily snacks for each section.
  • Large Dinghy Launching - Responsible for launching One Design Boats loaned to the program by members for use in the Teen Sailing Class and Race Team. This is done before classes start each day.
  • Doctor of the Day - (Pre-requisite: must be a doctor!) serve as Doc of the Day for one day of Junior Week or OptiKids or Race Team.
  • Parent of the Day - Carries hand held radio to communicate with each class. Familiar with phone locations at the club. Handle minor medical problems (mostly nettles or ‘windy day’ induced stomach aches). Contact Doc of the Day if necessary. Has access to all medical forms and liability release forms if necessary for medical evacuation of students. Contact parents if necessary.

Check-in

  • For Opti Kids, the "check-in" period will be the first morning of instruction for Opti Kids.
  • For Junior Week, "check-in" will be held on the Sunday immediately prior to the start of Junior Week and on the first morning of instruction for approximately 1 hour each time.
  • Check in for Race Team will also be on Saturday June 17 before the first session for Junior Week Race Team.

Check-in will be for the purpose of collecting laggard medical and liability forms, and any outstanding payments. The required forms will be mailed in late May to persons submitting an application or made available on the website and we will ask you to return them by mail.

Important Car Pooling Program

In 2007 we would like to see a large number of our Juniors at the championship events, traveling to events around the Bay and at our home regattas. We would also like to see more Juniors at the club on a regular basis after Junior Week. To facilitate this, a number of parents have expressed an interest in developing a “car pooling” network to transport our Juniors from Richmond to away regattas and to FBYC for practice sessions. The idea is to get a group of parents who would each take one or two days during the summer to transport our Juniors from Richmond to where ever they need to sail. Again, the purpose of the network would be to provide transportation to regattas AND regular practice sessions at the club. We encourage you to consider being involved in this transportation network even if your Junior is not interested in sailing in regattas and just needs a ride to the club during the week to practice. Even before registration for the Junior Program we hope to get a response from all the parents who would like to be involved or have any interest in this type network so we can begin to plan and organize the program. We are asking all of you to please take a minute and respond by email to Eric Powers at eric.powers@mma1.com or phone Home Voice: 804-706-1427 Cellular: 804-363-5553. We look forward your suggestions and comments, and we look forward to seeing all of you in Fishing Bay.

New Housing Program

FBYC’s Junior Program is also pleased to present a housing new program designed to provide working parents an alternative to making frequent trips to Deltaville so their kids can participate in junior sailing. We have developed this program in cooperation with Christchurch School who already runs boarding camps from their facilities located off Highway 33 just east of Saluda. The school is able to provide our sailors with daily housing, meals and transport to and from FBYC from June 18th till July 14th including Junior Week (June 18-22nd) and then on a more limited basis from July 30th until August 17th (blackout 6-9th).

Our kids would spend their days at FBYC practicing their racing skills or learning to sail and then return by bus to Christchurch in the late afternoon to end their day with dinner at the school cafeteria and fun with their evening programs (games, movies, music). Each morning, they will rise, have breakfast and get on the bus back to FBYC to join their sailing classes or on regatta days, be picked up by parents to travel to away regattas. Christchurch will make sure kids are fed, cleaned up and in bed at a reasonable hour and supervised during their time on campus. A boxed lunch is provided for them to take with them to FBYC each day. On days when there is no sailing classes at FBYC (such as Mondays) Christchurch will provide our kids with the opportunity to participate in their choice of ongoing summer camp activities such as fishing trips, crew boating and marine science programs.

The cost for this is a very reasonable at $50 per day (al la carte) or $250 per seven-day week (Sunday afternoon till Saturday evening).
