2007 Junior Racing ProgramAll Junior sailors interested in racing are welcome to participate several ways:
Race Team Extended Program:Race Team Extended Program members begin with Junior Week (June 16-20th) but continue their classroom and on-the-water training through till mid August (16th). This program is designed for sailors that have mastered the basics of sailboat racing and are capable of sailing a race course independently without assistance. It consists of seven additional weeks of instruction (June 21 through August 15th) from world-class professional coaches Luis "Dingo" Canuto and Damian Saponara. Juniors sail Optis or Lasers Radials. The post-Junior Week program includes coaching at FBYC plus an extensive schedule or regional and national race events.Race Team is a great choice for junior sailors who enjoy spending time sailing with their friends and want to rapidly improve their skills through regularly scheduled coaching sessions and through opportunities to test themselves at competitive events. Race Team members will be grouped by boat: Optimist Laser or Radial. Race team members will receive distinctive race wear clothing items. This is our top level offering for our most committed juniors. This year Dingo will coach the Laser Radials and Damian will coach the Optimists. To enroll in the Extended Program, the junior should enroll in all sessions starting with Junior Week (separate charge). The instruction and practice for this program will be cumulative, and teaching and learning works better when the instructor can add new material each week, rather than spending time "catching up" students who missed prior sessions. It is important that students come to as many practices and regattas as possible. Also, as previously stated, Laser sailors who wish to enroll only for Junior Week may do so at the Junior Week rate, or may attend Junior Week, plus additional days at the per day rate on a space-available basis. Juniors not already signed up for Race Team Extended Program before Junior Week may have the opportunity to join the team at the conclusion of Junior Week on a space available basis. Please note this program requires a minimum 2 days of volunteer commitment on the part of parents to serve as chaperones and other necessary tasks. Race Development Team Extended Program:Race Development Team Extended Program members typically begin with Junior Week (June 16-20th - separate charge) but continue their classroom and on-the-water training through till mid July. This program is designed for junior sailors that want to develop their basic racing skills with some classroom and on the water training combined with attendance a several nearby regattas and perhaps a trip to the USODA Nationals at Patchogue Village, NY. Sailors signingup for this program should have already mastered their basic boathandling skills and be prepared to learn the fundamentals of basic rules, signals, starts, upwind strategy, mark roundings and finishes. It is important that participants attend as many of the classes and regattas as possible.
RegattasThe Race Team Extended Program participants will attend a number of Regattas - both at FBYC and away. Juniors who are not in the Race Team Extended Program may also attend the Regattas. Coaching for Non-Race Team members will be available for everyone attending regattas at a rate of $50/day. The Regattas require significant Parental involvement, particularly on the away events. We need car pool drivers, chaperones, safety and observer boats, etc.The Primary Regattas hosted by FBYC this Season Include:
Nearby Major Regattas Include: The NYCC Virginia State Championship at Norfolk YCC and the Junior Olympics Bay Open at Hamption YC will feature Green Fleet Clinics. |
