Parent and Volunteer Support

There’s lots of room for parent volunteers to pitch in to help us with many aspects of the program. Parents are an integral part of junior sailing and are needed to support and coordinator various aspects of the program. Parents should view this as an excellent opportunity to spend time with their children as they progress through the most special time in their early sailing careers. This is also a great opportunity for parents to socialize with their fellow volunteers at FBYC and some of the best sailing venues on the Bay.

  • Carpooling/Chaperones (Extended Programs) - Getting the kids to practices at FBYC and to regattas requires parents to chip in and coordinate transportation from Richmond to FBYC or other points. Since practices are during the week and regattas are on weekdays and weekends, it is important to coordinate transportation and chaperones to make sure kids get to and from their events with minimal effort.
  • Housing (Extended Programs) - It is helpful for members with housing near FBYC or racing venues to provide overnight housing for kids. This reduces both time and costs for busy parents. Plus its fun for kids to spend after hours time with their friends. This year, we also have a cooperative agreement with Christchurch School to provide housing, meals and transportation for FBYC Juniors between June 15th and July 15th but we'll still need parents of the day.
  • Power Boat Operations - Insure boats are launched, moored and refueled each day and operational.
  • T-shirt Distribution - Insure T-shirts are distributed to the various sections on the last day of instruction for Opti Kids, Junior Week and Race Team.
  • Photographer - Takes ‘action shots’ of students during instruction. Make photos available to parents during the class session. Arrange for group photo for OptiKids, Junior Week and Race Team participants, and make available to members at their expense.
  • Social - Coordinate and execute any social activity chosen! Acquire and insure secure distribution of daily snacks for each section.
  • Large Dinghy Launching - Responsible for launching One Design Boats loaned to the program by members for use in the Teen Sailing Class and Race Team. This is done before classes start each day.
  • Doctor of the Day - (Pre-requisite: must be a doctor!) serve as Doc of the Day for one day of Junior Week or OptiKids or Race Team.
  • Parent of the Day - Carries hand held radio to communicate with each class. Familiar with phone locations at the club. Handle minor medical problems (mostly nettles or ‘windy day’ induced stomach aches). Contact Doc of the Day if necessary. Has access to all medical forms and liability release forms if necessary for medical evacuation of students. Contact parents if necessary.

Important Car Pooling Program

In 2008 we would like to see a large number of our Juniors at the championship events, traveling to events around the Bay and at our home regattas. We would also like to see more Juniors at the club on a regular basis after Junior Week. To facilitate this, a number of parents have expressed an interest in developing a “car pooling” network to transport our Juniors from Richmond to away regattas and to FBYC for practice sessions. The idea is to get a group of parents who would each take one or two days during the summer to transport our Juniors from Richmond to where ever they need to sail. Again, the purpose of the network would be to provide transportation to regattas AND regular practice sessions at the club. We encourage you to consider being involved in this transportation network even if your Junior is not interested in sailing in regattas and just needs a ride to the club during the week to practice. Even before registration for the Junior Program we hope to get a response from all the parents who would like to be involved or have any interest in this type network so we can begin to plan and organize the program. We are asking all of you to please take a minute and respond by email to Eric Powers at eric.powers@mma1.com or phone Home Voice: 804-706-1427 Cellular: 804-363-5553. We look forward your suggestions and comments, and we look forward to seeing all of you in Fishing Bay.

Check-in

  • For Opti Kids, the "check-in" period will be the first morning of instruction for Opti Kids.
  • For Junior Week, "check-in" will be held on the Sunday immediately prior to the start of Junior Week and on the first morning of instruction for approximately 1 hour each time.
  • Check in for Race Team will also be on Saturday June 17 before the first session for Junior Week Race Team.

Check-in will be for the purpose of collecting laggard medical and liability forms, and any outstanding payments. The required forms will be mailed in late May to persons submitting an application or made available on the website and we will ask you to return them by mail.
