Leukemia Cup Regatta
raises record $200,000

Although the final count is not in, the 7th annual Southern Chesapeake Leukemia Cup Regatta activities in Deltaville over the past weekend raised over $200,000 from sponsors, participating sailors and supporters.

This is clearly a new record for the Deltaville event, which ranked 3rd in the nation last year for generating Leukemia Cup Regatta revenues to aid victims of blood cancers.

While 60 yachts participated in the “hotly” contested races on Saturday, the boat that stole the show was the Schooner “Virginia.” Thanks to the Marine Heritage Foundation, the “Virginia,” making one of her earliest public appearances since being launched this spring, conducted tours for over 400 people while berthed at Fishing Bay Harbor Marina on Saturday. Voluntary tour fees also benefited the Leukemia Society as well as the amount raised by the donation of a November trip on the “Virginia” for the lucky bidder at the Leukemia Cup auction held at the Deltaville firehouse on Friday evening.

The auction was an overwhelming success. In fact, its popularity has grown to the extent that floor space may need to be increased next year to accommodate the many who want to attend this event.

While the winds were light for the regatta hosted by the Fishing Bay Yacht Club and Stingray Harbor Yacht Club, they never quit for the many competitors from area clubs on the course.

Winners of the seven divisions were: “Zephyr” (Dennison), Classic Fin Keel; “Joss” (Golembicki), Classic Full Keel; “Survivor” (Stephens), Cruising; “Voodoo Chile” (Lissenden), PHRF A; “Insatiable” (Karn), PHRF B; “The Red Dragon” (Latell), PHRF C/D; and “Jaguar” (Mac Butler), PHRF Non-Spinaker.

The gala dinner and awards presentations were again held at facilities provided by Stingray Harbor Marina. Over 600 people attended for a celebration that included live entertainment late into the evening.

When the curtain fell on the 2005 Leukemia Cup, co-chairs Carolyn Norton Schmalenberger and Judy Buis expressed sincere thanks to the presenting sponsor, SunTrust Bank, the many sponsors, participants and supporters for making this event the best ever.
