FBYC's Opti Kids and Junior Program have experienced a record number of early registrations this year, including early registrations from non-members. As a result, Opti- Kids and Intermediate Opti or Racing Opti classes of Junior Week are now closed. Non-member registrations are subject to final confirmation after April 20, depending on member registrations. If you are an FBYC member and still wish to register for Opti Kids or the Intermediate Opti or Racing Opti classes, please contact Alison Lennarz at avlennarz@gmail.com as soon as possible, but in no event later than April 20, 2010. Opti Kids and Junior Week each have finite capacity, and space in either program cannot be guaranteed to any member at any time. Class slots are allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis, with members having a priority before April 20.

The SBRW EARLY BIRD flock is

entry free and get the 10 free drink ticks, be sure to enter SOUTHERN BAY
RACE WEEK no later than April 17th. The sooner you enter the better it is

SAFETY PRODUCT- Word comes from up on the rivah, Yankee Point
on the Rappahannock, that there is a new safety product out that seems worth
mentioning. It replaces
the bulky horseshoe buoy which as everyone knows is tough to throw and sometimes
takes some wrangling to get out of the holder. This is a Mustang™ Survival
Rescue Stick:: MRD100  which
is basically thrown like you would throw a stick to a dog (it’s that
simple). On landing in the water it
inflates into a horseshoe float for a person. Mustang Survival claims it can be thrown
100’ and a practice stick is included. Check out www.mustangsurvival.com/rescue_stick
Check with your local boating equipment provider. If they don't have it,
they can probably get it for you.

MURPHY'S
LAW: To the Racing Beagle getting ready for sailing
means getting in shape, among other things. So, if anyone is planning
on getting the Mustang Rescue Stick (see item above), Yrs Truly,
the Racing Beagle, will be happy to help with your practice
throws. You throw it, and The Murphster will bring it back, .

for the Equinox! Uncover the tootsies, officially.

Right now yacht clubs and sailing
organizations of all stripes are organizing SOCK BURNINGS. This is
the way sailors, and particularly racers, show their belief that Spring is
either here or very, very close.

There will be a sock burning at the SpinSheet

click on crew listing, and get it done!

MURPHY'S LAW: Sock
Burnings are a grand racer tradition. Yrs Truly, the
Racing Beagle, always attends more than sock burning
and always, of course, uses four socks. It empties out the old sock
drawer and starts race party spring training. Sock it to it!

/S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us
all.

Crew Training Program

This course consists of three classroom sessions and two to three optional practice sessions on the water on board racing sailboats. It is offered by Fishing Bay Yacht Club (FBYC) to give sailors and non-sailors alike the basic information, understanding of terminology and confidence to crew on a racing sailboat. Following the last classroom session, there will be a social gathering for participants, instructors and FBYC’s racing skippers. All participants will receive written materials that complement the classroom sessions and include FBYC’s 2010 racing schedule. On-the-water training opportunities will be available at FBYC Saturday, April 3, and Saturday, April 10, to place interested participants with FBYC racing skippers and crews on their boats for a practice session to tune up for the racing season, followed by a chance to ask questions and get further information in an informal “debriefing” session.

Classroom instruction will be provided by experienced FBYC racing skippers and crew and supplemented by demonstrations and hands-on practice. The object of the course is to teach the basics, prepare newcomers to the sport for what they will encounter on board a racing sailboat, and give participants a solid introduction to a sport that will give a lifetime of enjoyment.

WHEN: 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 23, Tuesday, March 30, & Tuesday April 6
#481 SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE

Word is, from a reliable source (even though
he is a sailboat racer), that Travis Weisleder, who races
his J105 out of Fishing Bay, has
acquired Layline. Sounds like we will have another
top quality equipment supplier with a local connection.

USNA sending INTEGRITY
and DEFIANCE to SBRW 2010. The United States Naval
Academy has entered two of their offshore race boats, both Navy 44 MK2's, in
SOUTHERN BAY RACE WEEK. Integrity and Defiance each carry
a rating of 81 and will race in PHRF A. The likely skippers of the boats
crewed by Academy Midshipmen, are Midn Alex Dolan
(Integrity) and Midn Emily Frost
(Defiance). Other Early Birds who
have tossed their caps into the SBRW ring include Phil Briggs'
J/36, Feather, Rusty Burshell's J/30, Cool
Change, and Graham Field's Islander 36,
Independence. For SBRW 2010 info www.blacksealcup.com
or contact Lin McCarthy at (757) 850-4225 or email mcbear@earthlink.net

MURPHY 2010 "Rules Around the Race Course" drew 95
attendees (SRO) to host Norfolk Yacht and Country Club Saturday for
a day long look at racing rules in specific situations on the course.
"The racing rules of sailing can be tough, and this group of skippers and
crew were determined to understand the nuances of the rules in given
situations; they were a great group," said John McCarthy, who
led the presentation. NY&CC kept the coffee, pastries, etc. flowing,
so there was plenty of sustenance for everyone. Racers renewed racing
friendships, twisted their brains on some knotty subjects, and generally
welcomed Spring a few days early. Gettin' ready to go racing!

MIRAGE took 2nd in the St Petersburg
National Offshore One Design (NOOD) regatta last week.
Christian Schaumloffel brought his Hobie 33 in 2nd in the 6
boat gathering of Hobie 33s with a string of 4-3-1-2-2-3. The Mirage
crew picked up a last minute fill in at the regatta, Jim
Williams who sails his own Hobie 33, Treaty of Ghent, in the
southern Bay. Jim and his wife Barbara were vacationing at St Pete Beach,
when Christian rang his cell phone!

PDQ the nice, quick
SR-21 that raced in the southern Bay PHRF C fleet late in the 2009 season
will be back in 2010, but she has changed her name. Louisiana man,
Mike Klopf has new-named her SWAMP
RAT. Not only fast, but fierce, too!

NUTS & BOLTS RACE MANAGEMENT - March 20th,
Saturday morning (9:00am - 12:30pm) at Hampton Yacht Club - FREE.
Sponsored by CCV. This is a Basic Primer that will get you
through your annual race committee assignment. This is NOT "inside race

850-4225.

Trailer Sailors - here's good
news! Southern Bay racer Rodney Moore
sends a special recon report. He says that the public boat ramp off
of Ivy Home Road/Marina Road (Hampton, VA) is open again. Rod also
says to be aware since "...they did not post any "End of Ramp"
signs".

An almost new comer to PHRF C this season is
Gay LaRue and Tom Wood's Sonar 23, Sereda.
Sereda broke into PHRF C racing at the end of 2009, as did Kathy
and Mike Barber with their Merit 25, Figaro. Both will
be nice additions to a growing fleet.

More for southern Bay racers to be
weather-thankful about. Doug Savage,
who races his S2 10.3, REPRISAL, out of the Washington DC
area shares the following info: "News from DC is that our
record snow (26") managed to overload and sink no less than 9 boats in our
marina. All were centerboard/swing keel boats between 19 and 26 feet, and
it appears the snow forced them down deep enough that they flooded through the
centerboard trunks or retraction cable exits. Most have been refloated. I was
happy that my boat is on the hard." Be careful out there.
Mamma Nature can be tough!

Watch Anna closely as she prepares
for the next Olympics. US SAILING has announced the 2010 US
Sailing Team AlphaGraphics. The team is packed with medalists
and rising talent. Anna will be match racing in Elliott 6Ms.
Women's Keelboat Match Racing: Anna Tunnicliffe
(Plantation, Fla.), Molly Vandemoer (Redwood City, Calif.) and Debbie Capozzi
(Bayport, NY) and Genny Tulloch (San Francisco, CA), Alice Manard (Charleston,
SC., and Karina Vogen Shelton (Watsonville, CA).

Town Point Yacht Club is
pleased to host Nauticus Executive Director, Hank Lynch, to
discuss development of a youth training/community sailing program to be
operated from Nauticus. The meeting is scheduled
for tomorrow, Tuesday, February 23rd,
beginning at 5:30 PM at Mo O'Malley's Restaurant on Granby St. in downtown
Norfolk. The meeting is open to everyone, no reservations required.

MURPHY'S LAW:
Yrs Truly, the Racing Beagle, is going out on a limb (picture that!)
and packing away both pairs of snow boots. Ya gotta
believe! /S/ Murphy the
Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.

# 480 SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE

ORACLE (USA) WINS AC #33 -
Brings Home the Cup - it's been away for 15 years!
Oracle crushed the Swiss entry Alinghi in each of the best 2
out of 3 races off Velencia Spain, for the American's
Cup. Our high tech trimaran walloped their high tech catamaran. So, our
engineers beat the heck out of their engineers. Perhaps the Swiss
should stick to clocks and chocolate! Now, the questions are
what will the participant conditions be for the next AC competition
and where it will the racing take place. Stay tuned. There's
more info at www.americascup.com And, there
is some unbelievable stuff on the start of race 2, including a mutiny
on the RC boat, at www.saillingscuttlebutt.com,

Scuttlebutt Extra 3 - Sunday, Feb 14, 2010.

LAST REMINDER: Registration

Saturday, February 20, 2010, 9am-3:30pm at Norfolk Yacht &
Country Club. A unique view from the racers'
perspective on the race course - learn what you can do,
when you can do it, and to
whom! Sharpen up your tactics
and strategy - master the
game.

Some days you're the windshield... and some days
you're the bug. Southern Bay racer Denis
Bessette sails his trusty Merit 25, Shadowfax, in the northern
most waters of the southern Bay - up around the Potomac River area. He had
gone the extra mile, stashing his baby for the winter under a storage
shelter. Then the additional 18 inches of snow fell a week ago and caused
the shelter to do a kerplop on the boat. The rig was already down for
storage, so that's a good thing. The really immediately bad part was that
Denis could not check for damage until he shoveled the snow off the
roof of the entire shelter. That took two days. It was that bug
part. And, now we have more snow.

Media Watch: Check out the
February SpinSheet, page 75. That's southern Bay racer
Dave Taylor who is the subject of the "APS Chesapeake Racer
Profile." Dave currently competes in the PHRF B fleet in his red
boat, Wham Bam (Andrews 27)

SOUTHERN BAY RACE WEEK Update:
Cal Huge, from Summerville, South Carolina, joins the
SBRW Early Birds in PHRF A with his Archambault 40RC,
JUBILEE. And, Bob
Howell's Beneteau Ocn 44, CYMRU is first
on the Cruising Fleet entry list; Bob makes his home in Virginia
Beach. Tim Dull, also from Virginia Beach, is first to
enter PHRF Non-Spin-1 (single headsail) racing

DART, Santana 25. Mike Veraldi
enters QUICKY in the J/24 one-design fleet,
gaining Early Bird status and benefits. For SBRW 2010 info www.blacksealcup.com or contact Lin
McCarthy at (757) 850-4225 or email mcbear@earthlink.net

505 MIDWINTERS - 27 teams mix it up in Tampa
Bay. Four Southern Bay and Beyond boats raced in heavy air
(15 to 30+) at DeSoto, Florida, a weekend ago. Three Hampton, VA, and
one Cary, NC, teams made the trip to the spot where Tampa Bay and the Gulf of
Mexico meet. Chris Behm sailing with Jesse Falsone

finished 4th in the 3 day regatta. Dustin Romey and
Henry Amthor where 6th. Christian Rasmussen and son,
Thomas (13) stuck with it and finished 21st. North
Carolinians Dave Burchfiel and Josh Gray tied for
24th amid a ton of broken gear. One competitor put it well, explaining
that there were ". . .lots of broken rudders and bent masts." But, he
continued, "It was awesome sailing in some huge waves."

NOTE: The 505 East Coast Championships will be hosted by Hampton Yacht
Club September 24 - 26, 2010.

When you feel a snow-whine coming on, consider the
situation at the northern end of the Bay. This is from the notice
Dorian Haldeman sent out Saturday to the northern Bay
Laser Frostbiters: "All the Lasers are still covered with 12-24 inches of
snow. There is a 3-4 foot snow bank blocking access to
the driveway to the Laser racks and ramp. The driveway and
ramp are still covered by 12-24 inches of snow. The basin is frozen solid. (Ali
Meller and I [Dorian] experimented last night by throwing an object with
significant mass onto the ice and it bounced.) So needless to say there
will be no frostbiting [Sunday]. I do suggest that we get a team of
volunteers to meet at SSA and shovel a path to the boats and the water just
in case the basin thaws by next week." Now,

that is a dire situation!

Southern
Bay Brigade forming early for Scewpile Lighthouse Challenge.
Jake and Pat Brodersen's Midnight Mistress
has already registered for Screwpile 2010 and captured Bow # 1 for the
regatta. And, Meridian 2, Sledd
Shelhorse's racing machine is already on the Screwpile entry
list.

Summer Holiday and Festival Events
are on the southern Bay racers' schedule too. Make the most of
them!

Memorial Day

CCV Commodore Jake Brodersen wants
racers to know that CCV Racing Membership this year includes a ticket to
the Annual CCV
Awards Party. Additional tickets can be purchased with
your registration for only $30 each. This offer is only good through April
5th. The CCV
Rules Clinic on April 5th will be your last chance
to get this discounted price on party tickets. 2010 CCV dues:
Racing Membership = $150 US SAILING members ($165 for non-USSA members); Club

contact CCV Commodore Jake Brodersen at Captain_Jake@cox.net

MURPHY'S LAW: Yrs Truly, the
Racing Beagle is home! There was snow everywhere the
Murphster traveled. There was no escaping it. It's not easy
making your way through 10 inches of snow on 8 inch legs.

So, this Racing Beagle is home and glad of it . Pass
the remote - I'm good 'til Spring. /S/ Murphy the Racing
Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.

A Dust-up on America's Cup Race Committee

A quite revealing report from Bob Fisher at the America's Cup during the Starting Sequence of Race #2. Seems there was bad blood on board. I find this fascinating when considering the level at which Race Management should be for the "premier sailing event in the world".

Read Bob's report here

Here is the pertinent part of Bob Fisher's report:

"On board the committee boat, the members of the SNG refused to handle the flags. It was left to the Golden Gate YC representative and a chase boat driver to assist Harold Bennett. The reason for the SNG spat was unclear, but it has been suggested that they would have preferred not to race. The GGYC representative said: 'I will not comment on it, except to say that it was the most disgraceful behaviour I have ever encountered.' "
