SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE  #128
SBRNYCU is an independent weekly publication of southern Chesapeake Bay racing happenings.

New Fleet Splits Announced for 2003 for PHRF in Southern Bay Region:  The PHRF of the Chesapeake Annual Meeting of delegates held in Annapolis Saturday approved fleet splits for the bay regions. The southern Bay (Region IV) splits for 2003 are:  PHRF A: up to 109;  PHRF B: 110 - 160; PHRF C: 161 and above.  PHRF Non-Spinnaker:  All ratings.  For additional information, contact Region Vice President John McCarthy at (757) 850-4225.

Other PHRF Items:  PHRF N is a 2 headsail fleet. If a club desires to restrict a PHRF Non-Spinnaker fleet to one headsail in an event, they must so indicate in the notice of race and sailing instructions.  In other words, the default position for non-spinnaker fleets is double headsails.  This does not prohibit clubs from having single headsail fleets or both double headsail and single headsail fleets, but the information must be posted in the NOR and  the SI.

Change in PHRF Handicapper Assignments in South - Region IV: Geoff Hummel's resignation for the region handicappers board has brought about some changes in the assignments and the appointment of Christian Schaumloffel, previously secretary for the board, to fill Geoff's handicapper seat.  Christian will become handicapper for BBSA, NNSA, NYCC, and PBC.  Randy Pugh will become Handicapper-at-Large, and Dick Lane will shift to handicapper for HYC.  The rest of the composition of the board remains unchanged.

America's Cup junkies - The quarter-finals of the Louis Vitton Cup start tomorrow, Tuesday, November 12.  We are getting to the nitty-gritty.

DON'T CREATE A CRISIS - Get your Racing Event Schedules for 2003 ready now to carry to the southern Region's scheduling meeting as soon as the date is arranged.  Scheduler Martin Holland says he is aiming for a date this month.

Because you asked: Issue #127's 2003 schedule reminder included a quote from Lewis Carroll's, The Walrus and the Carpenter. The Walrus and the Carpenter, having walked/escorted/deviously misled  some plump oysters to dinner (the oysters being the intended main course), stop to prepare to eat. 'The time has come,' the Walrus said, 'to talk of many things:  Of shoes...and ships...and sealing wax...Of cabbages... and kings... And why the sea is boiling hot... And whether pigs have wings.'

HYC Frost Bite Series Continues - Race #3:  Good wind (12-15 knots) and sunshine for the 15 mile course set by the RC for A and B Fleets (12 miles for C and Non-Spin fleets).  RESULTS:  PHRF A:  1. Mirage, Christian Schaumloffel; 2. Woof, Skip Amory; 3. Cheryl Lea, Ben Weeks.  PHRF B:  1. Cool Change, Rusty Burshell;  2. PF Flyer, Larry Preddy;  3. Gremellyn, Greg Cutter.  PHRF C: 1. Incentive, Ron Lewis; 2. Roundabout, Alan Bomar; 3. Stardancer, John Blais.  PHRF N-S (2HS): 1. Beowulf, Bob Old; 2. Midnight Mistress, Jake Brodersen; 3. Rainbow, Phil Gillhan.  PHRF N-S (1HS):  1. Wolff Trap, Scott Wolf; 2. Vagabond-De, Lester Knight.  That leaves only 2 more races for the Series (Nov 17 and Nov 24).

CCV Officers and Board of Directors for 2003:  Commodore Dave Bouchard, Vice Commodore John McCarthy, Secretary-Treasurer Dave Taylor, and Board of Directors:  Bob Archer, John Blais, Larry Bryant, Ron Lewis, Dave McConaughy, Ben Owens, and new board members Neal Garrett, Bob Mosby,  and Christian Schaumloffel.  Thanks for loyal service to retiring board members Brian Deibler and John Hanna.

"Christmas is a'coming and the geese are getting fat..." In case a tasty goose just won't do as a gift for your favorite sailboat racer, here are some ideas to remedy gift giving problems:  Check out The Mariners' Museum (Newport News) gift shop-some really neat stuff.  Hampton Yacht Club is having a pre-holiday sale of regatta paraphernalia the day after Thanksgiving (call (757) 722-0711 for info).  Fishing Bay Yacht Club offers some special note cards picturing a water view sketch of their new clubhouse (call (804) 740-1145 to order).  The Watermen's Museum tucked underneath the Yorktown side of the Coleman Bridge has a great gift shop.  Check out Norfolk's Nauticus - that's the place next door to the Battleship Wisconsin. And, think about your local merchants at sailing gear shops and in sailmaker lofts.  A new headsail may be beyond your reach, but a new set of class flags is usually welcome.

MURPHY'S LAW:    Legally  Lite:  When looking for ways to make your boat go faster, lightening the total package comes to mind first.  There are some things you can do without PHRF's specific blessing or added expense:  you may alter or remove passageway doors, cushions, dining tables, and carpet provided  all Safety and Accommodations Standards are met (see PHRF Standard Sail and Equipment Specification, Section 14. General Equipment Limitations).  Other modifications should be reported to your handicapper.  Remember, when in doubt, ask your PHRF handicapper. So, this brings new meaning to the V-berth cushion shuffle! Living to race, racing to live./s/ Murphy The Racing Beagle
