Miller on Trapeze HUNT-MILLER TAKE 2nd AT ROLEX MIAMI OCR - Four days on the water and 10 races later, southern Chesapeake Bay homies Steve Hunt and Michael Miller took Olympic silver medalist Paul Foerster and Kevin Burnham to the wire, finishing one scant point (24, 25) behind the old dogs.   All this leads up to the USA team trials in November.  A good start, guys!  Go get'em!John Dodge will be aboard Donnybrook when she goes for the Pineapple Cup in the Fort Lauderdale to Montego Bay race (Friday, February 7).  John's been rehabbing a repaired elbow (many saw him shake hands with award winners while his arm was in a sling at the Region 4 CBYRA soiree a couple of weeks ago).  This race should be a good test for the bionic mod.

Laser District 11 Championships - May 31-June 1 - contact George Panayides,  gpanayid@wrsystems.com   or Leigh Morgan at  leigh_morgan@msn.com

Joe Krolak, immediate past president of CBYRA and friend of all Bay racers, said that Key West Race Week was "...like doing a Frost Bite," especially on the final day.  Joe sailed on the J/120, Teamwork, out of Beaufort, North Carolina. Teamwork won the PHRF 5 fleet (13 boats) with a string of 1-(9)-2-7-3-2-2.

Race Committee folk going to the US SAILING NATIONAL SAILING PROGRAMS SYMPOSIUM this week (Feb 5-9) in Annapolis, might want to be on the lookout for the Regatta Pro-Start booth.  Regatta Pro-Start is the automatic starting horn that plugs into the boats' battery and sounds for various starting sequences.  There is information about this race management tool on the web at  http://www.phcsystems.com, but at NSPS you can see their "hands on demo".  RP-S written material will also be available at a number of southern Bay clinics and workshops including the CCV-HYC Race Management Seminar.

Schooner Virginia Project watchers:  Capt Bill Johnson confirms that a 41 ton lead external ballast keel will arrive at the Schooner Virginia Yard today.  The Yard is located directly behind Norfolk's Harbor Park (baseball park).  Check it out.

Mark your calendar and get your tickets - In connection with the fund raising effort of  the Leukemia Cup Regatta (hosted by FBYC and Stingray Point Marina on July 12th), The Mariners' Museum will host Gary Jobson as he makes his America's Cup recap presentation on March 21.  Included in the ticket price ($25) is a wine reception with hors d'oeuvers and a tour of TMM popular nautical exhibits. Contact Sandy Thurston at (800) 766-0797.

MURPHY'S LAW:   Barker and Hamish Pepper? Two names you probably heard first from the Murphster.  These are the key afterguard components of the Team New Zealand boat that in less than two weeks will defend the America's Cup.  The two, Dean Barker, helmsman, and Hamish Pepper, tactician, don't have a lot of actual AC racing in their resumes - in fact a total of one race.  No matter, they have the mystic New Zealand factor - home-grown talent.  Living to race, racing to live.  /s/ Murphy the Racing Beagle
