A bee for your bonnet:  On October 18, The Mariners' Museum, in Newport News, VA, is presenting an Antique and Classic Boat Show. Plans call for an all day affair on the Museum grounds and a number of runabouts on display on the lake.   Efforts are under way to have some small sailboats there too.

2003 HOD NATIONAL CHAMPION is LATANE MONTAGUE: Latane and his crew, Chris Johnson, sailed  in the National Championship under the Potomac River Sailing Association banner.  As 2003 champion, Latane will name the site for the 2004 event.  He may pick any location on the Bay, and several interesting ones will be explored as possible hosts.  Finishing second in the 2003 regatta hosted by Ware River Yacht Club (Gloucester), was Eddie Wolcott (crew Drew Johnson) and 3rd was Devon Sweeney (crew Jeanenne Cochran).  PRO was Rick Klein.

Long Range Planning Calendar Note:  The Screwpile Lighthouse Challenge Regatta dates for 2004 are set - July 18, 19, and 20,  2004.  Better write it down.

FEATHER  Masters Tom Brady Memorial Fleet: Eleven boats filled to the brim with 55+ years old Baby Boomers  hit the  race course Saturday and decided who has experience braggin' rights for the coming year.  It is appropriate that the race committee boat for the HYC sponsored annual Tom Brady Masters Race, manned by a bunch of banned-from-racing youngsters, was named State of Mind. RESULTS: Overall Winner and first place in Fleet 1, Feather, Phil Briggs; 2. Battlewagon, John Hanna; 3. Cheryl Lea, Ben Weeks.  Fleet 2:  1. Incentive, Louis Lewis; 2. Restless, Sonny Smith; 3. Independence, Graham Field.  The Tom Brady Masters' Race received sponsorship assistance from the North, Quantum, and Winters sail lofts, Batten Pocket, the Paint Supply Company, and Patrick's Hardware.  Race Chairman, Kathy Brady; Race Committee boat skipper, Glenn Giles, State of Mind.

Dave McConaughy will take his J30, still nameless, to A-town for ARW and stay over for the J/30 Nationals that will be run the 2nd weekend in September out of Eastport Yacht Club.  John Blais' Stardancer is Annapolis bound to go up against 6 other Pearson 30's in their one design class.

What's in a name?  A man whose nickname was "T-Bird"  has a race named in his memory, Tom Brady Masters' Race, as well as the Tom Brady Junior Sailing Center at HYC.

Oh, Those Roller Furlers:   If you claim a roller furler credit, your rating is "bumped" to your advantage because you are using a roller furler and the legal headsail that goes on it.  Remember, PHRF By-law 17.D (Standard Sail and Equipment Specifications) says that the headsail with which you start the race may not be changed unless removed in extreme conditions and replaced by a legal heavy weather storm jib.  Yes,  when rules permit, a second  headsail may be raised and flown downwind.  But, at the end of the leg, the second headsail must be removed when the boat goes upwind.  The letter and the intent of the PHRF roller furler credit is that the roller furler headsail you start with is the one you sail with for the entire race.

MURPHY'S LAW:    Phew!  The Dog Days of Summer are officially over (almost).  Now, we have to watch out for the Indian (Summer).  Time to rejuvenate the racing juices.  Living to race, racing to live. /s/Murphy the Racing Beagle
