2016 Opening Day Coming Up

Hello FBYC members and friends, we are so glad that Opening Day is finally here! We would like to invite everyone to Opening Day and the Blessing of the Fleet on Saturday, April 9th. As always, we will kick off the year with the annual Opening Day race (first warning at 1100). The evening festivities will include cocktails at Ric's Place starting at 5 PM with the Blessing starting around 5:30 PM. Dinner is at 6 PM sharp. Once again we will have live entertainment with members of the Crain Brothers Band performing at 6:30 PM playing a diverse mix of good music.

Our 2016 Year Book received final pre-press approval today.   Thank you to our editors: Meg Rock, Tracy Schwarzschild, Bob Fleck, Jon Deutsch, Doug Bendura, A.L. Braun, and Doug Selden, and to our recruiters for Race and Social Chairs: Jim Raper, Becca Wash, Joe Nelson, Borna Kazerooni, and John Galloway and finally Nica Waters, final review editor, for lots of volunteer work.   Pictured holding the proof is Sara Joyner, a graphic designer at Uptown Color in the Fan.  Sara does all production for our Log and also for the Yearbook.  The book is going to press tomorrow and will then be mailed to each member.  Expect to see the book in you mailbox in early April …

Opti Donated to Deltaville Maritime Museum for FBYC Exhibit

History

This spring visitors to the Deltaville Maritime Museum will see some familiar history on display among the nautical history of the area.  Club historian Jere Dennison and several other volunteers have been working with the Deltaville Maritime Museum to include an exhibit on Fishing Bay Yacht Club that will include pictures, stories and other artifacts like an Opti and even one of old club signs.

Friday, an Opti donated by Luke and Logan Hayes was set up at the Deltaville Maritime Museuem by Mark Hayes and Doug Bendura.  The boat is a 1981-1982 Opti built at the North Carolina Maritime Museum and used in their junior program until 2005 when it was bought by the Hayes family.  …

We will start the 2016 cruising season at the FBYC clubhouse with beer & wine and hors d’oeuvres, hosted by Doug Selden and Alison Dwier-Selden. The event will begin at 5:00 pm, and is open to all members – including those who haven’t cruised in the past, but would like to learn more on what it is all about! All beverages and food will be provided. We will have the opportunity to renew our friendships, share past sailing stories, and talk about the upcoming cruising schedule. Fishing Bay Challenge Bowl for 2016

Each year The Fishing Bay Challenge Bowl is used by Fishing Bay Yacht Club to select a boat or boats to represent the Club in a designated sailing activity. Each year the Commodore shall select an appropriate event or activity, which either needs a boost in participation, or is deserving of special recognition. 

This year Commodore Ted Bennett has selected the non-spin class for The Fishing Bay Challenge Bowl to encourage owners of offshore boats to get involved in racing for the first time.  The award will be given to the highest scoring boat that competes in at least half of the scheduled events using the CBYRA high point scoring system.

FBYC Juniors Dominate 2015 CBYR High Point Awards!

 On Saturday March 5th the Maryland Yacht Club hosted the 2015 CBYRA High Point Awards, with FBYC Juniors winning 18 of 43 awards! Over 346 sailors competed in 28 regattas and our sailors shined.

 Our Opti Team had 7 of the top 15 sailors including top overall Opti winner Benton Amthor and Opti Blue winner Guthrie Braun with Madeline Amthor as the number 3 Opti Girl.

 The laser team was equally as impressive with 7 of the top 15 overall sailors as well! Garret Levy was FBYC’s top finisher in 3rd place and Amanda Almany was …

Key West Race Week, hosted by Storm Trysail Club, took place January 17-22, 2016.  It was a wet and wild week of top class boats competing in four Divisions on the Coke bottle green waters of Key West. With weather conditions described by Commander Weather as "juicy and unstable," it was just that.  Predictions of 8-15 knots fell short; in reality 20+ knot breezes with close, steep chop seas were the norm for the week. This perpetual award was first presented in 1981 by Commodore Beverly L. Crump. It is awarded to the Fishing Bay Yacht Club member skipper of a yacht or yachts enrolled in the Club Register, who have most successfully represented FBYC in sailboat racing events conducted by other yacht clubs or associations during the past year. Such events may be either one-design or offshore and specifically shall include Chesapeake Bay events, and events with area, regional, national and international competition.
