Don't miss out on the oysters!

Our Annual Oyster Roast is only four days away, this Saturday. Please bring a side dish to share as we celebrate the end of 2019's sailing season and make plans for 2020. There's no cost to members but we encourage you to sign-up online so we don't run out of oysters...and bring a side dish to share.

As if the oysters weren't enough:  We'll have a bourbon tasting event for those who imbibe; bring your own reusable glass to cut down on waste.  AND the Chesapeake Bay Foundation will also be on site to showcase some of their efforts to protect and improve our cruising and racing home.

2019 Chesapeake Bay Laser Masters Championship Results

High water and impassible roads couldn’t keep the Laser Masters from sailing this weekend.  Extremely high tides due to a harvest moon and a Nor’easter off the coast made Fishing Bay Road nearly impassible in 6-8+ inches of water at times. The road and Fishing Bay dock were still underwater at some of the low tides over the weekend.

LaserMastersHighWaterPostponement.JPG

On Saturday everyone arrived plenty early ahead of the mid-morning high tide and rigged and waited for the right wind.  After a 2-hour postponement the wind filled in and 36 boats filed out to get in some races in the afternoon.

The wind filled in out of the SSE for 3 races with the first being won by Gavin …

"O Oysters," said the Carpenter,
"You've had a pleasant run!
Shall we be trotting home again?'
But answer came there none--
And this was scarcely odd, because
They'd eaten every one.

Sign-up now for our annual Oyster Roast and End-of-Season Pursuit Race on November 2.  We're "tilting the icebox and emptying the bar."  That means we're using any leftover barbecue, other foods and drinks to finish up this part of the season.  We're adding raw or roasted oysters to the mix and asking only for contributions to the donation jar.

The 38th Chesapeake Bay Laser Masters Championship is just over a week away and the event is set to feature all of the things it is known for – great racing, amazing food, dedicated volunteers and a fantastic group of competitors who are fun to sail and hang out with.  This year competitors are coming from as far away as Florida, New Jersey, and beyond and also includes closer by contingents from Annapolis and the tidewater area.  A couple competitors are even tuning up for the regatta by sailing the Laser Masters North American Championship in Marblehead MA this coming weekend.  Those that aren’t tuning up in Marblehead will be sailing on Saturday in the Laser Fall Regatta at FBYC …

November is an awesome month at FBYC.

Our Closing Day Race and Oyster Roast is slated for November 2.  It has always delivered excitement on the course followed by oysters served raw or roasted.  We'll be cleaning out any leftover kegs from the season, but you can bring your own drink as well as a salad or dessert to share.

Then, the Commadore's Ball with our annual meeting and awards presentation will be two weeks later on November 16.  We're hard at work creating a fantastic evening at Richmond's historic Hippodrome with fantastic dining and rocking music.

Grab your calendar, mark the dates and watch for more details.  We may be on the hard soon but our season really doesn't …

What Makes for a Great Cruise?

Cruising News

Add up these ingredients:

  • A sweet, downwind sail up to Reedville's Mill Creek
  • A lazy afternoon with 12 boats securely anchored in a lovely cove
  • A wine tasting at Jacey Vineyards and fabulous dinner catered by Carwash
  • A fleet of dinghies finding their way back in the dark guided by anchor lights
  • Another downwind sail back home the next morning

But the best ingredients were the FBYC cruising fleet members who joined together for a wonderful weekend on the water.  Simply delicious!

Offshore Racing

2019 Keelboat Championship Crew

We are club-wide proud of Glenn Doncaster and his Nanuq crew for representing FBYC at the 2019 US Offshore Keelboat Championship in Annapolis this past weekend. Glenn and his crew,--Matt Newborn, Alex Seamus O'Toole, Sloan Burns, Jim Cobb, Commodore Paul Wash, Jerry Latell and their midshipman, Grace, took third place.

The 3-days of fleet racing, consisting of long-distance and buoy races in Navy 44's, attracted stellar competitors from throughout the nation.  Each of the 11 US Sailing districts sent a crew with our guys besting some prestigious organizations like Chicago's Corinthian YC and California's St. Francis YC. The Naval Academy also campaigned a boat (they won) and provided a cadet to serve as crew on the other contenders.
