FBYC SPRING SERIES - CEFALU, WAVELENGTH, LA MAGA, and SCHIEHALLION WIN FLEET TITLES:  The final day of Fishing Bay Yacht Club's Spring Series ended with a sea breeze that generated a lot of excitement on the first windward leg of the second race Sunday.  Almost everyone (previously on a wind search all over the course) got to the rounding mark at about the same time.  Yeee-Haaaa - get that chute hoisted and do it NOW!!!  Here's how things shook out after the entire series.  RESULTS:  MORC: 1. Cefalu, Blackwell Nottingham;  2. Insatiable, Mike Karn; 3. Mojo, Mark Wensell.  PHRF A: 1. Wavelength, Rob Whittet; 2. Voodoo Chile, Leroi Lissenden; 3.Loose Cannon, Strother Scott.  PHRF B: 1.La Maga, Allan Heyward; 2.Elancer,David Hinkle; 3.Trilogy, Wayland Rennie.  PHRF Non-Spin: 1.Schiehallion, Brad Miller; 2.Nutcracker, Dick Cole; 3.Checko, Barfield-Smith Syn.  PRO:  Bill Spencer.

J/22 Worlds Results:  Wicked current will be the memory jogger for this regatta held last week in Annapolis.  Southern Bay connections did fine among the 130 entries and stiff competition.  In the GOLD fleet (64 boats), Scott Nixon pre-regatta "favorite" coming off the NOOD win, took 5th.  Steven Hunt was 14th, and Scott Batchelor, 32nd.  In the 64 boat SILVER fleet, Will Crump finished 2nd and David Alexander, 14th.
BLACK SEAL CUP - SOUTHERN BAY RACE WEEK:  JUNE 4, 5, & 6.  Racing, partying, awards, big boats, one design, small boat classes, tents, Dark 'n' Stormy drinks, food, T-shirts, racers' brew, Blackbeard the Pirate, warm weather, good music, and more.  You need to be at this regatta.  Details available at the regatta web site   www.blackseal.com   The time is now - get entered and get ready!  Contact:  Martin Holland at (757) 726-0289

CAPE HENRY CUP -  KAHUNA, TAKES PHRF A  and THE CUP, and DEFIANT and THE HUNTER WIN THEIR FLEETS:  Ya gotta stand up to the fickle finger of Mother Nature, if you are going to do weekend "distance" races on the Bay.  Saturday, three of five fleets did just that.  PHRF A (27.4 nm), PHRF C (18.5 nm), and PHRF NonSpin (18.5) had a boat make the time limit which allowed their entire fleet to finish and be scored.  The morning started nicely enough, wind SW at 8-10 knots, but it went hot as hinges by mid day and sometimes the anemometers were spinning aimlessly, while the fleet battled adverse current most of the day.   Sanford Richardson's Kahuna stuck it out and crossed the finish line with 11 minutes and 9 seconds to spare.  Ahead of Kahuna came the surprise of the fleet,  Bill Derr's Defiant in PHRF C.  Bill with his two sons, Ryan (14) and Cody (11), sailing the 18.5 mile course, was first to finish the race with 33 minutes and 8 seconds to spare (1700 deadline for first boat in fleet).    In the PHRF Non-Spin fleet, Scott Wolff, Wolff Trap, opened the deadline door by finishing with 00:06:36 to spare only to be corrected upon by Justin Morris in his Hunter 26.5, The Hunter, who finished in the water at 17:00:48.  RESULTS:  PHRF A:  1.Kahuna, Sanford Richardson; 2.Mirage, Christian Schaumloffel;  3.Check Six, John Scott.  PHRF B:  (no finishers within time limit).  PHRF C:  1.Defiant, Bill Derr; 2.Quicky, Mike Veraldi; 3.Small Potato, Butch Patterson.  PHRF Non-Spin:  1.The Hunter, Justin Morris; 2.Wolff Trap, Scott Wolff; 3.Trouble, Bill Barnes.  Cruising Fleet:  (no finishers within time limit).   PRO:  Scott Almond

MOOOOOMENTUM for Screwpile 2004 continues to build:  With race entries way ahead of the pace of previous years (more than 60 boats already have signed , sealed, and delivered their entry forms and fees), event preparations are at a fevered pitch.  And, event organizer L.G. Raley has announced a special team competition that will no doubt become a long standing tradition.  The Battle of the Chesapeake trophy will be awarded to the best yacht club or sailing association represented at the regatta.  So, now it's official - with the BOC trophy will come a year's worth of unlimited and undeniable braggin' rights!  Let's go get it!

White Shoal Sailing Club Series Results:  1.John Edwards, Recovery; 2.John Wandling, Rebecca J; 3.Richard Cassell, Alexis.

BERMUDA BOUND:  A lot of races are going to Bermuda this time of year and two southern Bay boats are entered in the Eastport Yacht Club hosted Bermuda Ocean Race Association race from Annapolis to Bermuda which starts June 11.  Jim Williams' Checks in the Mail  (Catalina 38) will be racing along with Mike Nestor's Glory Days (Cal 39).  It's the first time to Bermuda for Checks in the Mail.

Valkyrie goes from 28 to 36:   No, it is not a case of stolen identity, but rather a case of keeping hold of a good thing.  Karl and Senta Petersen have stepped up to a NY 36 from their Rogers 28.  In so doing, they will have to change from PHRF C to PHRF B.  But, they have kept the Valkyrie name for the new baby.  They swapped boats with a boater in Solomons, MD.  The new owner of the Rogers kept the NY 36's old name, MarLin, and the Petersens kept Valkyrie for the NY36.  Got that?!  The old MarLin (new Valkyrie) used to race in Long Island Sound under the name of Recursion, but that really was a couple of owners ago. And so, now Bill Gibbings' Jonathan, also a NY36, has a sister ship.

About that skipper's phone call:  Remember, he was spotted at the helm of Glory Days, on the starting line, with a cell phone in his ear.  Mike Nestor said it was an  important call... he had just saved a ton of money on his auto insurance.  And, of course, he was able start the race at the same time he was taking the call because he had spent the night in a Holiday Inn....

MURPHY'S LAW: Don't count on computer software to solve all your spelling problems. For instance,  you might get a raised eyebrow to either word, but there is a world of difference between crabs and carbs. Which would you rather have a bushel of carbs or a bushel of crabs?   Or, is it case... akkkk,  let's don't go there!  Living to race, racing to live.  Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all
