GET THE GOBBLER!!   2006 HOSPICE TURKEY SHOOT REGATTA - October 6-8.  Hosted by Yankee Point Marina on the Rappahannock River.  This is a very, very special event, that annually draws between 90 and 100+ boats.  The regatta is open to boats made of wood and to boats of a design that is 25 years or older - that includes Catalinas, J-24s, Flying Scots and others.  The socializing begins Friday and includes a happy hour, music and intense "sailor gathering".  Saturday's race is on a triangle course and Sunday's race is a pursuit race (slowest boats start first).  The overall winner of the regatta represents the Turkey Shoot in Annapolis at the National Hospice Alliance Championship Regatta in the spring.  Last year, the Turkey Shoot entry, Joe Waters and his crew, sailing in Lee Williams spot, finished 3rd in the championship competition.  For details and to enter, go to the event website at www.hospiceturkeyshootregatta.com
When the wind blows, racers go racing...  and that is exactly what 33 boats-worth of southern Bay racers did Sunday in Hampton Roads.  CCV Fall Series Races #3 and #4 proved to be a test of toughness and heavy air sailing skills.  Equipment broke and had to be mended, sails tore and had to be patched, and people got stressed and had to perform anyway.   In 20+ knots out of the southwest, the fleet banged up wind and flew downwind.  Cries of "let it go - ALL OF IT!"  and  "everybody move aft - NOW!", and  "hold on, we're roundin' UPPPP!" filled the air.  But, at the end of the day everybody was back home and feeling, well, like real racers.  RESULTS:  PHRF A - 1. David Eberwine, Sea Star (2-1);  2.Sledd Shelhorse, Meridian (1-4); 3.Lloyd Griffin, Cash Flow (3-2).  PHRF B - 1.Rusty Burshell, Cool Change (1-1);  2.Dave McConaughy, White Boat (3-2);  3.Larry Preddy, PF Flyer (2-3).  PHRF C - 1.Alan Bomar, Roundabout (1-3); 2.Chris Johnson, Blu Bus (4-1); 3.Dave Taylor, Midmorning Buzz (3-2).  PHRF Non-Spin - 1.Jake Brodersen, Midnight Mistress (2-1);  2.Tom Peddy, Impulse (1-2);  3.Rodney Paice, Wiki-Wiki (3-3).  PRO: John McCarthy;  Official Timer/Scorer: Dick Boykin;  Mark Boats: Bill Gibbings, Glenn Giles.

Remember, CCV Fall Series Races #5 and #6, Sunday, October 8,  same time, place, and bat channel.

YIKES!  Overlooked a 7th sprit boat in PHRF A in the southern Bay - how could you miss Jan Brandt's Rafiki? It is school bus yellow.  And, of course, there is a pack of J105s sailing in the Fishing Bay area fleet.

J24 Quicky plucked a crew member from the water in the starting area Sunday.  Now that is waiting until the last minute to "pick up somebody for a race!"   The MOB maneuver was however, well done.

The Wiki Wiki  crew  get the Bulldog Award for their performance in yesterday's CCV races.  Early in the first race, they put the spreader through their jib.  So, for the rest of the first race and all of the second, in order to keep the jib from tearing even worse,  they walked the jib around the spreader on every tack.  This in more than 20 knots and square waves.
