2007 NEW YEARS MADNESS RACE - 28 intended to race,  20 appeared on race day skippers meeting / buffet, and  13 actually started out Hampton Creek with the wild and woolly wind on their noses.   Some fell temporary victim to the exceptionally thin Creek water (and the tide was ebbing), some had too-close encounters, some sails were not up to the challenge, and, some even had attacks of common sense or football-itis and came in early,  but most got their  very important New Years Day sail in the books.  RESULTS: Spinnaker A:  1.Phil Briggs, Feather; 2.Christian Schaumloffel, Mirage; 3.Mike Nestor, Glory Days.  Spinnaker C: 1. Ben Cuker, Callinectes.  Non-Spinnaker: 1.David Lively, Lively Lady; 2.Steve Ritz, Excelsior.  Cruising: 1.Michael Turner, Cat's Paw; 2.Raleigh Martin, Second Wind; 3.Bob Gumpwright, Mollie Rose.   Race Chairmen:  Steve Lunsford and Dennis Miner.

Dan Smoker came out of retirement yesterday and won Seaford Yacht Club's New Year's Day Race.  Race officials report there was no rain, but plenty of wind (22-25 knots, gusting to over 30).  Smoker's crew on his Nightwind 35, Smoke,  reported one gust of 39 knots.  That's cranking!

Top of the World !  The Final 2006 ISAF World Sailing Rankings are in and southern Bay  star,  Anna Tunnicliffe, recently of Old Dominion University, is  Number 1 in the Laser Radial - Women's One Person Dinghy Class.  That's Numero Uno, Folks!

This coming Sunday, January 7, The Velux 5 Oceans Race  leaves Fremantle for Norfolk, Virginia.  After they get here, they'll do the "R & R" thing and then, on April 15 [probable date], start Leg Three bound for Biboa, Spain, and the race finish.

FLORIDA BOUND:  Two Virginia boats are headed for the Lauderdale to Key West Race, Jan 10-12. Sledd Shelhorse and the Meridian crew  are entered in the flying reach race. The boat has already departed for the start area!   John Haracivet, sailing out of Gloucester, has entered his Beneteau First 38, Tempest.   Entered in Key West Race Week from the southern Chesapeake Bay and beyond areCash Flow (Hadley 40), , Lloyd Griffin, Jr, Elizabeth City, NC;  EZ (Soverel 33), Paul Lockwood, Beaufort, NC; Wairere (Thompson 30), Pete Hunter, Kill Devil Hill, NC; Bone Machine (J24),  Joe Corriher, Charlotte, NC; Rum at Six (J105), Worth Harris, Beaufort, NC;  Savannah (Melges 32), Walter Kennedy, Charlotte, NC; Bone Chillin (J80), Alan Simonini, Cormelius, NC;  Outrageous (J80),   Michael Jones, Wilmington, NC;  Sweet Baby J (J80), Robin Team, Beaufort, NC, and  John Dodge, former CBYRA president and Region 4 VP who has deep sailing roots in Fishing Bay, will be on Farr 40, Yellow Jacket.

Murphy Tuff Award:  The first Murphy Tuff Racer Award for 2007 goes to Brian McFadden and his crew of Osprey for their performance at the 2007 New Year's Madness Race.  The valiant trio spent more than an hour in the mud on the banks of the Hampton River before eventually being pulled off by a friendly power boat.  The entire race field was long gone by the time the rescue was complete.  Not to worry - our heroes gathered themselves and sailed the course, appearing at the finish area in time for the post-race party.  Now that is tuff!

Don Barfield and Steve Smith are giving their MacGregor 26, Checko, a sabbatical from the race course while they immerse themselves in crewing on local J24s in 2007.  Fleet 71 skippers, are you listening?  The plan is to try to have their own J24 for the 2008 season!  Now, that is a plan, and a good one!

OPCYC remains undefeated in the post-race party competition for 2007.  After yesterday's NYM Race, along with a number of assistant cooks, beverage procurers, and event helpers, Linda Williams set a record for most grilled cheese sandwiches made at one party, and Buck Rogers again claimed the title for best racers'  chili  available in the southern Bay.

Sailing World's  2007 Boat of the Year - Overall Winner is the Esse 850.   And, southern Bay racers have already seen the BOY up close and personal in the form of  Pam Burdett's, Psycho Tiller.  The 28 foot, open transom, sport boat has been zipping around the course for several months and is getting her "feet under her".  PT finished 2nd in her class and 3rd overall in the early December Gaboon Race.

"You are no  Einstein!"  To a racer, this intended "insult " is actually a compliment.  Word is  the top genius mathematician and physicist , Albert Einstein, was a sailor.  He took up the sport as a teenager and sailed throughout his life.  HOWEVER, he saw sailing as his chance to relax - totally relax.  Legend has it that he spent a lot of time aground, mainly because he  was in the "dreamy" gear whenever he was out there.

Early Warning for Sleepyheads:  Daylight Saving Time comes even earlier this year!   Be ready to SPRING AHEAD on MARCH 11, 2007.  And, Fall Back on November 4, 2007.

A word to the wise:   As you check out the 2007 race notices, you'll see that more and more organizing authorities (OA) are requiring EARLY registrations and that usually there are early registration incentives, i.e. breaks on the entry fee, or special "goodies".  This trend has come about, generally, because OAs are trying to provide  racer benefits,  like on-line registration, timely results, adequate social provisions, etc.  All these good things require advance planning and race officials need to know how many are racing.  So, when the time comes, enter early and enter often!

Check out the January issue of BoatU.S. Magazine (page 45) for a piece on the C&C 99.  For a "real" owner's opinion,  talk with Dixon and Mary Wilde, who race their beautiful Kingfisher  in the PHRF A fleet on the southern Bay.

MURPHY'S LAW:  It's a good omen - wind on New Year's Day!  As they say, it blew like stink.  It blew dogs off chains.  It even blew away New Year's Eve party fuzzies!     /S/  Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
