SOUTHERN BAY RACING JUNIORS:  The Virginia State Junior Championships are all set for Saturday, June 23, at Fishing Bay Yacht Club.  This regatta is open to all junior sailors.  Optimist, 420, Laser, and Laser Radial racers are invited.  There WILL be a separate Optimist Green Fleet.  Get the details and get registered at the FBYC website  www.fbyc.net

WAIRERE  Wins SBRW "Boat of the Week":  Pete Hunter, and the Wairere  crew came up out of Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, and won a tie for first place in the PHRF A fleet, taking home "Boat of the Week" honors and the Black Seal Cup. Wairere  had a finish string of 1-2-2-1.  The final day of racing was cancelled when Tropical Storm Barry made his brief Hampton Roads appearance right smack dab in the middle of  the scheduled race time yesterday.  Conditions were bad and deteriorating, so a cheer (and Bloody Marys) went up from the racers when the decision to cancel was made at 0800. On Friday and Saturday, the race courses were bedeviled each morning  by light, fluky air, but saved each mid-day  in time for a second race by a moderate sea breeze.  Entries numbered 80 for the event, one more than any previous Southern Bay Race Week, setting a new record for  number of entries in "recent history".   RESULTS:  PHRF A (18) 1. Pete Hunter, Wairere (Thompson 30) ; 2.Sledd Shelhorse, Meridian 2 (Farr 36); 3.Lloyd Griffin, Cash Flow (Hadley 40); 4.Dave Eberwine, Sea Star (J36); 5.Bob Mosby , Cyrano (Frers 36).   PHRF B (17): 1.Dennis Hannick, Radio Flyer (Tripp 26); 2.David Taylor,  Wham Bam (Andrews 27); 3.Rusty Burshell , Cool Change (J30); 4.David McConaughy, White Boat (J30); 5.Bob Archer, About Time (Pearson Flyer).   PHRF C(11): 1.Mike Veraldi, Quicky (J24); 2.Alan Bomar, Roundabout (J24); 3.Chris Johnson, Blue Bus (J24); 4.Justin Morris, The Hunter (Hunter 26.5).   Elliott 770 One -Design (5): 1.Greg Cutter, Gremlyn; 2.Chuck Weaver, Dream Weaver.   PHRF Non-Spinnaker A (15): 1.Andy Armstrong, Virginia H (Soverel 30); 2.Leo Wardrup, Black Widow (Irwin 38); 3.Karl Petersen, Valkyrie (Dehler 39); 4.Walter Boatwright, Puff Card (Tartan 37).  PHRF Non-Spinnaker B (10): 1.Rodney Paice, Wiki Wiki (Pearson 26); 2.Jeff Rogers, Halaha (Columbia 28); 3.Steve Ritz, Excelsior (Cal 30).   CRUISING (4): 1.Mike Turner, Cats' Paws (Island Packet 44); 2. AC Update:   EMNZ = 3,  ITA LUNA ROSSA = 0.  And, just a memory jogger.   Former ODU Sailing Team great (Class of 1990), Terry Hutchison,  is tactician on the New Zealand boat.  Terry's ties to and accomplishments at Old Dominion University are better than strong.  He was All American and College Sailor of the Year in 1989 and 1990.  He is in the ODU Athletic Hall of Fame.  And,  he met his wife, Shelly there.  Shelly sailed at ODU and was an All American crew during her collegiate career.   And, by the way, the New Zealand boat is ahead 3-0 in the Louis Vuitton Cup finals; they need only 2 more wins to move on to challenge for the America's Cup.

HARBORFEST HOMETOWNE REGATTA, June 9 (Saturday), hosted by Portsmouth Boat Club.  This is a CBYRA sanctioned event, open to all PHRF Fleets and also offering a Cruising Fleet.  Skippers Meeting is THIS Thursday, June 7, 7:00pm at Portsmouth Boat Club.  The post-race social (awards presentation) is always a  first-class social opportunity - PBC is at the head of the class when it comes to "good ole" southern hospitality.  Entry fee is $30 ($25 for USSA members) and includes T-shirt and 6 wrist bands.  For entry and other info, contact event organizer Larry Bryant at (757) 484-4966 or do on-line registration at the PBC website www.portsmouthboatclub.org   This race is always a fun event and this year it happens right in the midst of Harborfest and Sail Virginia (all those tall ships) activity.  Take your "tall ship" and go racing!

It's official!  The Santana Class has certified a brand new Santana 20 fleet  for the Chesapeake Bay - FLEET 39.  Credit local racer John Ritter, skipper/owner of Temeraire, for getting things set up and bulldogging the details.  For information Santana 20 owners from anywhere on the Bay and its tribs may contact John Ritter at  (757) 865-1302 or (703) 516-3167.

Hobie 33s to contest their North American Championship on June 21-24.  Hampton Yacht Club will host this event and expects 10 or more Hobie 33s  from around the country.  The local PHRF fleet has three Hobie 33s sailing in the southern Bay on a regular basis - Mirage, Christian Schaumloffel, Jim Williams' and Will Roberts' Treaty of Ghent, and Chuck Eldred's Gail Force.

One of the crew on Sudden Impact  (Elliott 770 - Paul Swanson - Gainesville, Georgia) has hit on a sure fire way to keep others from drinking from his "grog".  He uses for his personal beverage one of those portable pee containers favored by long distance truck drivers.  Ummmmmmmm... now we have to hope he doesn't get his own containers confused.

PHRF Opening:  The Region IV (Southern Bay area) PHRF Handicappers Board has an opening  for their Board Secretary position.  Region Chief Handicapper, Alan Bomar, says that they meet 10 times a year, usually on a Thursday night each month.  To get the complete picture, contact Alan Bomar directly at (757) 810-4518.    This is a good opportunity for a southern Bay racer to gain an understanding of how PHRF works.

YORK RIVER CUP, Saturday, June 16, to benefit  THE WATERMEN'S MUSEUM.  This is a CBYRA sanctioned event.  Starts are offered for all PHRF Classes and a J-30 One-Design fleet, and a non-PHRF Cruising Fleet, too.  Sponsor York River Yacht Club is hosting this event and has stepped up the level.  There will be prizes, food, and raffles after the race.  Racing takes place near the mouth of the York River, and, here's the  "something different" part - the post-race party and dinner will take place on the water at the Watermen's Museum  (riverfront Yorktown).  Entry fee is $50 ( $55 for non-USSA members).      This is a great weekend opportunity. The York River is midway between Hampton Roads and the Rappahannock River areas.  Here's a chance for southern Bay racers to "meet in the middle."     For info contact Dan Fox at (757) 561-3636 or George Jones at (757) 784-3347.

Tropical Storm/Depression Barry was untimely for racers in the Annapolis - Newport Race too.  Twelve boats withdrew from the race in view of Barry's predicted appearance.  The course of the race brought the boats down the Bay from Annapolis and out the Virginia Capes to head up the Atlantic seaboard to Newport.

"If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all..."  Or so the song goes.  Malcolm Brady probably hummed a few bars of this song this past weekend.  Malcolm was all set to run a  mark boat at SBRW, when the first day of racing one of engines of Change, his boat, overheated.  He spent Friday fixing it, so he could report to duty Saturday.  But, Saturday, there were more engine problems. Malcolm spent all day Saturday wearing engine oil and frustration, so he could be ready Sunday.   Then... came Tropical Depression Barry...   Sometimes, life just don't  seem fair.

2007 SBRW fleet winners came from all over the southern Bay and beyond.  Pete Hunter (PHRF A), sailed under the CBYRA banner, and makes his home in  Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina.  Dennis Hannick (PHRF B) came down to SBRW from Dahlgren, VA,  - Dahlgren YC.  Mike Veraldi, who won the PHRF C fleet, sails out of Little Creek under the Broad Bay Sailing Association banner.  Greg Cutter won the Elliott 770 fleet, sails out of Hampton YC, and was instrumental in getting the Elliott 770 fleet to race at SBRW.  Andy Armstrong won the PHRF-A  Non-Spinnaker fleet and is based at Hampton YC.  Rodney Paice won the PHRF Non-Spin B fleet and hails from Portsmouth Boat Club.  And, Mike Turner, who won the Cruising Fleet, raced out of Old Point Comfort Yacht Club.

MURPHY'S LAW:   We just finished SBRW.  Now comes Harborfest and Hometowne Regatta.  What's a Party Dog to do??!!  And, where's my keg of Alka-Seltzer?   /S/  Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
