2007 FROSTBITE SERIES.  Racing begins this coming Sunday, October 28, and goes for 5 straight Sundays through November.  For info and to enter contact Dick Boykin at (757) 890-0093.   This series is hosted by Hampton Yacht Club.  Racing is around CCV marks in the Hampton Roads harbor.  This has been a warm Fall, and Winter may be the same.  Who will be the last person on your boat wearing flip-flops??

'Round the Lights Race:  The winds were great for the race in general and for water line boats in particular, a whole lot of reaching went on.   The great majority of the 53 boats went left out of Mill Creek  - to Thimble Shoal Light first.   The wind and current situation left little room for the "super fast" PHRF boats to make up their rating times, but, no matter,  it was a beautiful day to race.  RESULTS:  PHRF A (10 boats)- 1.Valkyrie, Karl Petersen; 2.Mirage, Christian Schaumloffel; 3.Cash Flow, Lloyd Griffin.  PHRF B (7 boats) - 1.Charis, Dick McCrillis; 2.Bad Habit, Bob Archer; 3.Cool Change, Rusty Burshell.  PHRF C (4 boats) - 1.Surprise, Bob Thomas; 2.Melantho, Jack Clayton.  PHRF Non-Spin 1 (8 boats) - 1.Margarita, Harry Tenney; 2.Virginia H, Andy Armstrong; 3.Sea Dawg, Scott Wolf.  PHRF Non-Spin 2 (7 boats) - 1.Wiki Wiki, Rodney Paice; 2.Sea Ya, Mark Poineau; 3.Halaha, Jeff Rogers.   Cruising Fleet  1(8 boats) - 1.Cats' Paws, Michael Turner; 2.Levante, Juan Diaz; 3.Foxy Lady, Phil Harrison.  Cruising Fleet 2 (10 boats) - 1. Content, Ron Peterman; 2.Gypsy Lady, Steve Runals; 3.Osprey, Brian McFadden.  Race Chairman, Bob Williamson.  Event Chairmen, Steve Lunsford and Dennis Miner.  OPCYC administers TRL.

More "old" Monarchs going to China for the Olympics.   Former Old Dominion University racer, Charlie Ogletree, Class of 1989, is going to seek the Gold in the Tornados.  Charlie will be joining Anna Tunnicliffe (2005), who won her spot in the Laser Radials earlier this month.  And, if predications from credible sources hold true, Sally Barkow (ODU 2001) and Debbie Capozzi (ODU 2002) will be the Yngling team representing the USA in China.  Thinking Christmas gifts for these Monarchs?  How about Rosetta Stone Chinese language programs.

Southern Bay Racers in the far Northland:  Former southern Bay racer John Traut has been in the far Northland, Great Lakes area, for some time now, and he keeps on sailing.  John was on Bob Hughes'  Heartbreaker a week ago when they won the 21st Canada's Cup .  John was part of the Macatawa Bay Yacht Club (Michigan) team that challenged for the Cup.   Heartbreaker  beat the Royal Canadian YC entry, Honour, by 5 seconds in the final match race to win the Cup.  Rules of the game:  first boat to win 5 races wins the Cup.  The final standings show Heartbreaker - 5, Honour - 4.

Bye-Bye and Best Wishes to Jack and Di Ricks -  Di and Jack, stalwarts of sailing and racing on Norfolk's Little Creek, are retiring themselves as well as their famous restaurant and watering hole, The Bay Point Grille.  Customer Appreciation Day is Sunday, November 4th - last call at 5PM.  Good Luck and pleasant winds to two larger than large friends of sailing on the Southside.

Jim Elliott, vice commodore of  Pasquotank River Yacht Club (Elizabeth City, NC) is in Tampa - taking a class ..."work related" he says - and has been doing Davis Island YC Thursday night races. He says DIYC averages 40 boats each Thursday.  One weekend Jim won the Rum Regatta at Apollo Beach.  How do you sign up for classes in places like that!?

Boats go bump in the day - Saturday's racing brought reports, some verified, of bumping (and sticking for a while) on sandbars.  Some even claim to have tapped rocks.  Kissing underwater surfaces is unnerving to anyone.  Remember now, next time you enter Mill Creek, keep the GREEN  daymark to your LEFT (PORT) going in - unless you want  TV-3 NEWS to get your name and sail number while you sit absolutely still on a breezy day!

REMINDER - Tiki Bar in Solomons - site of the Screwpile Lighthouse Challenge Regatta.  The Tiki Bar officially closes for the season on Saturday, October 27th.  In addition to the regular closing day mayhem that will go on all day, that evening they will have a ticket-required Halloween Bash, beginning at 8pm.  For info, contact the Tiki Bar at (410) 326-4075.  Proceeds from the evening Halloween Bash  will go to Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Southern Maryland, Inc.  It will all be a happening - guaranteed!
IMPORTANT REMINDER:   Friday, November 9th -  CCV AWARDS PARTY AND YEAR END BASH - Hosted by CCV at the Hampton Marina Hotel (formerly the Downtown Hampton Radisson).  Cocktails and heavy hors d'oeuvres from 7pm to 8:30pm.  Awards presentation, vote for 2008 Board and Officers, etc from 8:30pm to 9:15pm.  Dancing to live music (The Phun Doctors) and continued party-ing from 9:15pm until...   For a special room rate at the Hampton Marina Hotel call (757) 727-9700.  For info and to make ressies, contact Karl and Senta Petersen at (757) 271-2869.

CCV Racing officials announce awards to be given to all boats that  qualify   for the much coveted CCV High Point Awards.  In 2007, CCV ran 12  High Point Races.  Racers who started at least 9 of these races will qualify in the standings. Qualification awards will be presented in conjunction with the fleet High Point Awards at the annual presentation ceremony, beginning with this year's upcoming event set for November 9th.  Get your ressies made and get in the picture!!

MURPHY'S LAW:  Yrs Truly, The Racing Beagle,  tried the 'Round the Lights Race, but had the directions messed up.  Thought they said a Bud Light ... round a Bud Light!   /S/  Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
