As any golfer will tell you, it never rains on the golf course, and according to those who raced on Saturday in the NEPTUNE ATLANTIC RACE, neither does it rain on the race course!  This was a pursuit race which began just north of the entrance to Norfolk's Little Creek and finished  15 miles later, off the Virginia Beach oceanfront at the Old Coast Guard Station (24th and Atlantic).  Sailing the day after a nor'easter blew through the area,  racers experienced light air at the start, but things filled in to a moderate 10-12 knots before all was said and done and only one of the 21 starters did not finish.   RESULTS:  PHRF A (2 boats) - Christian Schaumloffel, Mirage, took first in his fleet as well as "first to finish" overall.   PHRF B (4 boats) -  1.Ben Cuker, Callinectes; 2.Mike Nestor, Glory Days.   PHRF C (3 boats) - 1.Cary Hardesty, Lona B; 2.Martin Casey, Bow Movement.  PHRF Non-Spin (4 boats) - 1.Leo Wardrup, Black Widow; 2.Dixon Wilde, Kingfisher.   Cruising (8 boats) - 1.Jim Forrester, Anjalei; 2.Leland Simmons, Cygnet; 3.Tom Pantalides, Mazi.  PRO - Scott Almond.     Broad Bay Sailing Association runs the Neptune Atlantic in coordination with the annual Virginia Beach Neptune Festival.

Southern Bay Boats do NOT have to give up their mid-week racing yet.  Beginning this Wednesday night, the new CCV October Race Series will begin.  Cost is FREE, but an ENTRY FORM IS REQUIRED.  For more info or to enter, please contact  David Taylor at (757) 344-5292.   Racing is planned for every Wednesday evening in October.

ANDY ARMSTRONG  and  BEN CUKER  win Divisions in HYC Annual Singlehanded Race.   Twenty (20) "big boat" skippers took their babies out for a solo spin Sunday afternoon around Hampton Bar in a light breeze under a gray sky.  The group was broken into two divisions, based on PHRF ratings and times were corrected accordingly.  RESULTS:  Division 1 (7 boats):  1.Andy Armstrong (Virginia H); 2.Greg Cutter (Gremlyn); 3.Craig Olsen (Namesake).  Division II (13 boats):  1.Ben Cuker (Callinectes); 2.Jonathan Phillips (Fine); 3.Dave Bettis (Boo Nasty).   Malcolm and Kathy Brady were Race Chairmen.

5o5 East Coast Championships:  Twenty-two (22) teams got together for this showdown at West River Sailing Club a weekend ago and our southern Bay 5o5-ers did great.  Tyler Moore (Hampton) with crew Jesse Falsone (Annapolis) finished 2nd overall  and Henry Amthor (Hampton) and crew  Dustin Romey (San Juan) took 4th.  Barney Harris (Arlington) and crew Clayton James (Gloucester) finished 10th.   Also, there from Raleigh, NC, finishing 18th were Dave Burchfield and Jay Smith.

MURPHY'S LAW:   BAILOUT!  Why all the fuss??  Yrs Truly, the Murphster,  was involved in a complicated bailout once.  A bunch of us "bailed out " a stationary beer truck at a post-race party.   And, our buddies later "bailed us out" of the  local hoosegow.    /S/  Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
