The last two weekends of this month are jam-packed with top flight racing on the southern Bay.  Two events dominate the action:  May 29-31 is SOUTHERN BAY RACE WEEK for the BLACK SEAL CUP.  Racing takes place at two venues, the Ocean View Course and the Buckroe Course, event headquarters is at Hampton Yacht Club, where all social activities (food, drink, music, awards, and more) will happen.  The event opens at the Welcome Party and Check-in on Thursday evening, May 28, and racing begins on Friday, May 29.  Hampton Yacht Club, Old Point Comfort Yacht Club, and Cruising Club of Virginia coordinate on this premier southern Bay event - 3 days of great racing and 4 nights of great parties.   Info and entry forms: contact Lin McCarthy at (757) 850-4225, or email at mcbear@earthlink.net  or check out the event website at www.blacksealcup.org.   Save the $50 late entry fee - get your entry in now!      Leading into SBRW is the 60th  DOWN THE BAY RACE for the VIRGINIA CRUISING CUP,  May 22-23.   This is a non-stop, 120 mile dash from Annapolis to Hampton that starts on Friday, May 22.  The event is organized and administered by Hampton Yacht Club (Hampton) and the Storm Trysail Club, Chesapeake Station (Annapolis).  Be part of racing history!  For info and details contact either co-chairman, Vince Behm (Hampton - 757-876-7778) or Wayne Bretsch (Annapolis - 301-332-6773) or go to the event website at www.hamptonyc.com and click on the DTB logo.

So, while Anna Tunnicliff was tooling around Boston Harbor as one of the Volvo boats was finishing the leg, her boat stopped  - i.e. stacked.  The interesting thing is that she was sailing one of the FOILING MOTHS that our very own southern Bay racer and president of the Foiling Moth Class Joe Bousquet has been ga-ga over from a couple of years now.  Hey, Anna, Joe is another addicted Mothie available for sharing experiences.  [NOTE: Definition of "stacked" - when the foils ventilate and  the boat suddenly goes from 30 inches above the water at speed to on (in) the water at no speed. Usually accompanied by a sudden impression of the shroud on the stackee's thigh.]

PHOTOBOAT and CORAL REEF SAILING APPAREL will be on site at regatta headquarters throughout SOUTHERN BAY RACE WEEK for racers' convenience.   So, get your regatta gear from CORAL REEF, so you'll look good when PHOTOBOAT snaps YOUR PICTURE in  the action on the race courses!

The J24 World Championships have been struggling (light air problems in Annapolis) for the better part of the event, but on the last day (Friday), they found enough breeze to get in three races which allowed for a throw-out in the final standings and a general good feeling all around.  When all was said and done, the Brazil team won the World J24 title with 41 points and Chris Larsen, sailing for the National Sailing Hall of Fame,  finished second overall (47 points) and was the first USA boat.
