15th Annual Greater Hampton Roads Hospice Regatta.  The VOODOO 2  crew and  skipper  Leroi Lissenden  earned the right to represent the Greater Hampton Roads Area Hospice in the National  Invitational Championship Regatta sponsored by the National Hospice Regatta Alliance in 2010.  The pretty green Tripp 38 was first to cross the finish line in the PHRF A fleet and held her correction.  Twenty-four  (24) boats accepted "The Challenge of Sailing for Others"  in delightful breezes, but under threatening skies  Saturday in Hampton Roads harbor.  A well deserved win for the Lissenden-Birch-Krushelnisky consortium.  RESULTS:  PHRF A (6 boats): 1.Voodoo 2 (Tripp 38), Leroi Lissenden: 2.Stardancer (Bene 36.&), John Blais; 3.Feather (J36), Phil Briggs.  PHRF B (6 boats): 1.Strega (S2 9.1), Neal Garrett; 2.Virginia H (Soverel 30), Andy Armstrong; 3. Morning Light, the movie, has just been released on DVD and BlueRay .  Jimmy Schools, who, by the way, was so instrumental in setting up the showing at the Naro in Norfolk several months ago, says that the Blue Ray Edition can be ordered from amazon.com for $25.99 with free shipping.  This is the Disney documentary on the team of young racers who do the Transpac without adult supervision on the boat.  It should be a great "rainy day" diversion for summer sailing programs as well as an addition to racers' home video libraries.

One last note on the Annapolis to Bermuda Race:  Another of our southern Bay racers, Christian Schaumloffel,  got a call on the Thursday, the day before the Friday start, and agreed to go on Dare-Dare, the Jeanneau 32.  Upon arrival at the boat, Christian  found Graham Garrington, regular crew on Sledd Shelhorse's Meridian 2, among the Dare-Dare crew.  Ask Christian and Graham about the details of the 475 nautical mile experience.  They have tales to tell.  One lesson learned here is that a large part of life  is "just showing up!"  When opportunity knocks, open the racing door!  [NOTE:  Mark Wheeler was called upon a few days prior to the start of the Annapolis-Newport  to navigate on  52-footer Vela Veloce.  He did, and consequently has been asked to do the Marblehead to Halifax  race on Vela.]

More about SCREWPILE 2009 :   Along with starts for all PHRF classes,  One-Design starts are offered for classes entering 7 or more boats.  This year in addition to J/105, J/35, Beneteau 36.7, and others, the  Chesapeake Farr 40's will be there.  Also, there will be a start for Multihull's and a start for Sport Boats that range for 6 to 7 meters (see the NOR and Sailing Instructions at the web site, www.splc.us ,  for details).
