Lin Mccarthy on Monday September 21, 2009 08:35AM

Good Grief!  It will officially be  FALL  tomorrow, September 22nd!  Better get in all the racing you can before 2009 expires!

RACERS AND THE RULES QUIZ:   If you miss a mark of  the course and no one protests, did you break a rule?  (Answer follows in this issue of SBRNYCU.)

FBYC Fall Series  got in two short races Sunday with LOOSE CANNON and HORIZON winning their fleets.  Loose Cannon, Strother Scott, and Blade Runner, Brad Davis, tied for first for the day in PHRF A, but Loose Cannon won the tie breaker by virtue of his first place in the second race.  Sam Michener's Double Eagle took third place with a first and a fifth.  In the PHRF B/C (combined)  fleet  Robert Fleck's Horizon had a third and a first to win the day.  Denton Roberts' Ardent took second place and Allan Heyward's La Maga was third for the day.   Principal Race Officer - Lud Kimbrough
RUMBLE  rambles to 2009 YORK RIVER CUP win!    Ben Weeks' J/29, Rumble,  won the York River Cup on Saturday.  Weeks took first in the PHRF A/B fleet, followed by Mike Austin, Movin' On (2008 YRC winner) in second, and Brian Gregory's Hornet in third.    Gary Van Tassel, Bellatrix, and Steve Bowen, Dream On, finished first and second respectively in the PHRF C fleet.   First and second respectively in the PHRF Non-Spinnaker fleet were Shenandoah,  Mastracci / Fox, and Jade, owned and sailed by Barry Campbell.  (Jim Bordeaux - YRYC Race Captain)

Every day is a good sailing day, but...   there has never been a better day than yesterday for the CCV Fall Series middle distance race.   The 35 race boats spent from just short of 3 hours to almost 4 hours (depending on the fleet and boat) to negotiate the course laid out among fixed marks in Hampton Roads harbor.  Both the PHRF A and the PHRF B fleets went just over 15 miles and the PHRF C and PHRF Non-Spinnaker Fleets went just over 11 miles.   The challenge of the harbor currents and  sometimes subtle wind shifts made the day a welcome change from windward - leeward courses.   RESULTS:  PHRF A (9 boats):  1.David Eberwine, Sea Star;  2.Sledd Shelhorse, Meridian 2;  3.Lloyd Griffin, Cash Flow.  PHRF B (11 boats):  1. Rusty Burshell, Cool Change;  2.David McConaughy, White Boat;  3.Bob Archer, Bad Habit.  PHRF C (11 boats):  1.Mike Veraldi, Quicky; 2.Bumps Eberwine, Spray;  3.Justin Morris, The Hunter.   PHRF Non-Spin (4 boats:  1.Dixon Wilde, Kingfisher;  2.Leo Wardrup, Black Widow;  3.Tom Connors, Fins Up.  Principal Race Officer - John McCarthy.  Official Scorer - John Ritter.   PLEASE NOTE:  There is a break before the final weekend of CCV Fall Series racing.  The final races (#4 and #5) are scheduled for Sunday, October 4.  Same time of day  and place.

Dave and Angela Bettis have an even bigger Boo.  The Bettis'  have a "new to them" boat.  As of this date,  Dave and Angela have not settled on a name for the Pearson 39 which they plan to bring to the race course in the 2010 season.  This, of course, puts the Bettis'  Boo Nasty (Ranger 33) on the market.

Answer to RR Quiz Question:    Those who grasp the essence of our sport already knew the answer.  Sailboat racing is a Corinthian sport, governed by the spirit of honor and fair play.  If you know you broke a rule, for instance, did not round all of the marks of the course, it is your obligation (not option) to retire.  The Basic Principle of our sport requires anyone who breaks a rule (whether protested or not) to take a penalty or retire.  But, the most basic principle of all is that character and integrity involve what you do even when no one is watching.

Wine, Women and Song!    The Schooner Virginia's Second Annual Celebration and Fundraiser is all set for October 2,  6 - 9 PM, in Downtown Norfolk at  Dockmaster's (formerly Black Finns) at Waterside Festival Marketplace.  There will be live music, a silent auction, and lots of fun.  This is a celebration of Virginia's 2009 Youth Sail Training Season and Education Missions.  It's a special affair ($100 per person, and there are special prices for group tables), for a good cause.  Dress is nautical casual.  Call the schooner office at (757) 627-7400 for reservations.

Northwest Passage, Antarctica, Three Circumnavigations.  Here's a chance to meet Roger Swanson and his wife Gaynelle Templin, who have accomplished all of the above.  Roger and Gaynelle are the first  American sailors to complete an east to west voyage through the fabled northwest passage.  They are also believed to be the first sailors ever to complete the northwest passage in a singe year (2007).  Roger's presentation will include pictures of the voyage and he will tell us what it was like to sail in the world's most challenging environments.  The yacht is a Bowman 57.  The event is FREE and will be held on Sunday, October 4 from  3pm to 4pm at Norfolk Yacht and Country Club.  Call 423-4500 for a reservation.
MURPHY'S LAW:    Yesterday a racer told Yrs Truly, the Racing Beagle  that,  "Nothin' makes a boat go faster that dollar bills."  He's talking about his plan to buy a new sail for 2010.  Now is the time, too.  Lots of sailmakers have Fall and boat show  specials.  Talk to your Sail Guru now.       /S/  Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
