FEATHER  WINS  'ROUND THE LIGHTS.  Phil Briggs, and his crew on Phil's J36, FEATHER, were first to finish and overall winner  in Old Point Comfort Yacht Club's annual pursuit race,  'Round the Lights.   Competitors must round both lighthouses, Thimble Shoal Light and Middle Ground Light.  Each racer sets his or her own course and order of lighthouse roundings.  It's a unique race and calls into play knowledge of the vagaries of wind and current in Hampton Roads waters.   All 59 entries started and all but 3 made the time limit.  Here are the award winners by fleet:  PHRF A (7 boats)- 1. Phil Briggs, Feather;  2.David Eberwine, Sea Star;  3.John Blais, Stardancer.  PHRF B (13 boats) - 1.Harry Tenney, Margarita;  2.Bob Archer, Bad Habit;  3.David Taylor, Wham Bam.  PHRF C ( 9 boats) - 1.Martin Casey, Bow Movement;  2.Michael Klopf, Swamp Rat;  3.Bumps Eberwine, Spray.   PHRF Non-Spin 1 (7 boats) - 1. Andy Armstrong, Virginia H;  2.Larry Bryant, Whisper;  3.Steve Taylor, Insolvent.  PHRF Non-Spin 2 (6 boats) - 1.Jeff Rogers, Halaha;  2.Scott Wolff, Sea Dawg;  3.Bob Wagner, Sea Slipper.  Cruising Fleet 1 (9 boats) - 1.Kent Utley, Mortar Offer;  2.Bob Howell, CYMRU;  3.Michael Turner, Cat's Paws.  Cruising Fleet 2 (8 boats) - 1.John Bouma, 3/4 Time; 2.Ron Peterman, Content; 3.Hank Giffin, Coeur'd Alene.  Event Chairman - John Lones.

FROSTBITE SERIES opens Sunday, October 31.  OPEN TO ALL, administered by Hampton Yacht Club.  One race each Sunday through November.  Racing is around fixed marks in the harbor.  Starts for all PHRF classes as well as a Cruising fleet.   This is a great chance for crews to build and develop skills and teamwork.  Entries are due at noon the day before the race day.  For information and details on entry, etc., please contact Race Chairman, Dick Boykin at 757-890-0093.

Helloooo. . .Did you not see the lighthouse?  Some competitors in the 'Round the Lights race on Saturday had close brushes with one lighthouse or the other, and at least one even endured a "kiss".  Middle Ground marks the confluence of three main bodies of Hampton Roads water -  the James River, the Elizabeth River, and Hampton Roads itself, and Thimble marks the main harbor entrance channel.  When very near either lighthouse the sucking sound you hear is most often current, unless. . . it's crew on the rail holding their collective breath.
