The 2011 Southern Chesapeake Leukemia Cup Regatta  pulled off three races over Saturday and Sunday and gathered together plenty of folks in an effort to raise funds for a worthy cause.  Fishing Bay Yacht Club and Stingray Harbour Yacht Club coordinated efforts on the weekend regatta that produced a total of 65 boats racing in PHRF, One-Design, Classic and Cruising fleets.  Race officials got off two 4+ nm miles races on Saturday and were able to slip in a 2 miler in yesterdays very light conditions.  RESULTS:  PHRF A (4 boats): 1.Sam Mitchener, Double Eagle; 2.Leroi Lissenden, Voodoo 2.   PHRF B (5 boats): 1.Jerry Latell, Chupacabra; 2.David Hinckle, Elancer; 3.Miles Booth, Shenanigan.   PHRF C (8 boats): 1.Bob Fleck, Horizon; 2.Sam Marshall, Play it Again; 3.Russ Collins, Morningtide.   PHRF Non-Spin (6 boats): 1.MD Riley, Turbo's Tub; 2.John DeJong, Temptress; 3.Craig Olson, Loki.   J105 One Design (5 boats): 1.Mike Karn, Inevitable; 2.Strother Scott, Loose Cannon; 3.Scott Collins, She Crab Soup.   J24 One Design (4 boats): 1.Alan Bomar, Roundabout; 2.Neil Ford, Rocket J.  Principal Race Officer (PHRF and One Design) Brooks Zerkel.    Classic Fleet (9 boats): 1.Frank Murphy, Last Boat III; 2.Ric Bauer, Desperado; 3.Dick Cole, Nutcracker.   Cruising 1 Fleet (14 boats): 1.Lee Fisher, Free Wind; 2.Mike Stephens, Survivor; 3.Jonathan Hutchings, Harbor 20.    Cruising 2 Fleet (10 boats): 1.Joe and Mary Grebunas, Tiki Rose; 2.Booty Baker, Klimax; 3.Stan Coloff, Sanctuary.  Race Chairman (Classic and Cruising)-Lud Kimbrough.

Twenty-eight (28) boats came out for the  2011 Veterans Cup, Langley Yacht Club's annual event, on Saturday.  The weather had cleared during the night and the racers benefited from a nice northerly breeze.  They got in two short, 4+ nm, races.  Winner of the Veterans Cup itself was Phil Briggs in Feather.  Phil did so by winning  the PHRF A fleet by the greatest margin over the 2nd place boat in his fleet.  RESULTS:  PHRF A (4 boats): 1.Phil Briggs, Feather; 2.John Blais, Stardancer.   PHRF B (3 boats): 1.David Bouchard, Ganar! [3-1]; 2. David Taylor, Wham Bam [1-3].   PHRF C (7 boats): 1.Mark Wolfe, Orange Blossom Special [1-1]; 2.Rick Griffin, Braker [2-2]; 3. ** Saturday, July 16   York River Moonlight Race   Entries are due by Wednesday, July 13.  For info contact Steve Bowen (757) 869-7830.  This race goes out the York River to York Spit Light and returns.  This is a CBYRA sanctioned event and counts toward Region 4 High Point standings. The official course is announced in the NOR.  First warning is at 1900.  There is no time limit on the race. Awards are presented at the YRYC Annual Awards meeting.  York River yacht Club is the race organizer.  PLEASE NOTE: York River Yacht Club's Moonlight Race (CBYRA #413) date has been changed from Friday, 7/15 to Saturday, 7/16. ** Saturday, July 16  Little Bay Challenge  Entries (free) are due by 1200 July 15 - after that, there is a $10 late fee.  For info contact Scott Almond at (757) 471-2663. Racing is in the confines of Little Bay, aka Willoughby Bay.  Fleet splits will be announced at the 1100 skippers meeting (Saturday) on the steps of Willoughby Harbour Marina.  ALL fleets are non-spinnaker, single headsail only.  The post-race party begins at 1900 (7pm) at Rebel Marine and features Eddie Swindell's Party Band, burgers and cold beer.  Party admission is $10 - pay with race entry or at the skippers meeting.  Broad Bay Sailing Association and Portsmouth Boat Club are the event organizers.

For Cruisers Who Race.  It is not too early to be readying for the 2011 Caribbean 1500.  This is the 22nd rendition of a favorite rally/race. Departure is scheduled from Hampton, Virginia, on  November 7, 2011.  The 1500 is now organized by World Cruising Club (WCC).  The rally was founded by Steve Black of Cruising Rally Association in 1990.  WCC events combine cruising with a competitive element.  Participants can choose whether to join in the fun competition and motoring is allowed in all except pure racing divisions.  Ocean Sailing Seminar, Hampton VA: September 24-25.  Fully-inclusive 2-day seminar covering all aspects of preparing your boat and crew.  www.carib1500.com/seminars/index.html   World Cruising Club has offices in UK and USA.
