Thirty-six (36)  35-years-and-older Laser racers held forth Saturday and Sunday at the Chesapeake Bay Laser  Masters Championships hosted by Fishing Bay Yacht Club.   Racers came from New Jersey, Texas,  Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Maryland, and Virginia.  When all was said and done (3 races on Saturday and 4 on Sunday), Mike Schmidt from Magothy River Sailing Association was first overall by one point over Keith Davis (Mission Bay Yacht Club).  David Schoene of Severn Sailing Association was third overall.  Both Schmidt and Schoene sailed in the Masters age group (45-54), and Keith Davis in the Apprentice (35-44) category.   Southern Bay  Laser racers at the CBLMC were:  10 - Alain Vincey; 12 - Michael Moore; 13 - Len Guenther; 15 - Ron Thompson; 16 - Robert Suhay; 27 - Mike Toms; 29- Brad Squires; 34 - Richard Biggs.  The first Great Grand Master (65+)  (5th overall) was Newton Wattis from Surf City YC, and the first Grand Master (55-64) (9th overall) was Jacques Kerrest from Potomac River Sailing Association.  Event Chairman - Jon Deutsch;   Principal Race Officer - Rick Klein.   These people are proof positive that sailboat racing IS a lifetime sport!

RACERS AND THE RULES QUIZ:   In your club annual bragging rights regatta, you believe you are grievously fouled at a mark by THEM .  You holler "Protest" and fly your red flag immediately.  Now, you are back at the dock and you are getting ready to file your written protest.  The time limit to file is close to expiring and you do not have a actual protest form, so you scribble down where and when the incident occurred and who you are protesting on an empty SubWay bag and hand it to the proper authority.  Is your protest going to be heard?  (Answer follows in this issue of SBRNYCU.)

It was  WINDY Saturday and the Rappahannock Cup Regatta was canceled.  However,  so as not to let good wind go to waste, RRYC racers decided to reef mains and hold a two-race non-spinnaker regatta.  Six boats were on the starting line in strong winds and lumpy seas.  Sam Marshall, Play It Again, won the day with 1-1; Lew Thatcher in Catitude was second with a 3-2; and, third place went to Tom Asch in Moya, by winning a tie breaker with Pete Knight, SaluteTom Chapman and Dwight Timm  filled in the fleet.  Gary Hooper and friends did the race committee-ing.

J24 Racers - ECC soon and not so far away!   Oct 28-30 - J/24 East Coast Championship - Severn Sailing Association, Annapolis, MD  Hook up the trailer and get on up there.

Answer to RR Quiz Question:   Yep, you are going to be heard.  The protest committee will first determine the validity of the protest - did you hail, fly your flag, make proper notification, etc. In this case we are saying the SI did not require the protest be submitted on a specific form (most do not).  RRS 61.2  lists what is required for the written protest.  You have included the where and when of the incident, and the protestor and the protestee.   Other factors, i.e. the rule you believe was broken and the name of your representative can be provided before or during the hearing.   So, put your brain in gear as to what you believe happened during the incident so you can explain it in the room, decide if there are credible witnesses to the incident you wish to call during the hearing, and head on in.  Upholding the rules of the game is on the competitors; the protest system is helpful to everyone.

18 schooners raced down the Bay at the end of the week in the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race.  Several more either did not start or started but did not finish the race.  Portsmouth is where the visiting schooners are and they certainly are worth a lunchtime stroll around the city docks.  America took line honors.  Sadly, missing this year from the race were Virginia, she lays in semi-mothball status at the Nauticus (Norfolk) pier, and The Pride of Baltimore, now owned by a private concern and "earning her keep" on an assignment north of the Bay.

PHRF of the Chesapeake annual Board of Delegates Meeting, Saturday, November 12 - Fredericksburg, Virginia,  at the Hilton Garden Inn.  The meeting is OPEN TO ALL CURRENT MEMBERS OF PHRF.   Go to the www.phrfchesbay.com  and click on the meeting notice to see the meeting agenda.  If you plan to attend the meeting, PHRF asks that you contact the Stew Buckler, Executive Secretary, at (410-414-3270), so that appropriate accommodations can be made for the number of attendees expected.    The proposed class splits for Region 4 (Southern Bay) are the same as the 2011 splits.

MURPHY'S LAW:  Yrs Truly, the Racing Beagle,  is advising on early searches through the trunk of your car for those foulies you "stored"  last Spring.  The water temps are already in the 60's and the cool to cold air is coming as sure as ants to a picnic.  And, if you care about your fellow crewbies, you might apply some of that scented mildew remover to your gear.  Racing Beagles aren't the only ones with super sensitive olfactory  nerves.  /S/  Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
