DAYLIGHT SAVE TIME ENDS THIS  COMING SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 6th at 0200 (2AM) - Fall back and snooze one more hour!

The Caribbean 1500 departs Hampton on Monday, Nov 7th -  ergo , there are possible crewbies around for Sunday's Frostbite racingIn previous years, Carib1500 sailors have been delighted for a break from their  "preparing-to-go" mode and jumped at a chance for a nice day race in the harbor!  Look now at the docks (downtown Hampton, Bluewater Yachting Center, and HYC)  for the boats with the 1500 pennants, call your sailmaker (they usually are helping the 1500 folks), check at the website for contact info, etc.   And, to 1500 sailors who would like to join a local race crew for the Sunday Frostbite Racing - racers usually start gathering at Hampton Yacht Club lounge around 0930-1000 to eat breakfast and get ready for the 1200 warning signal.  Racing is in the harbor, just beyond the entrance to Hampton River.  Make yourself known - it's a very friendly crowd!

FROSTBITE SERIES OPENS WITH GREAT BREEZE, PLENTY OF SUNSHINE, AND A  BIT[E]  OF FROST!  Twenty (20) boats crossed the starting line for the first of five races in the 2012 Frostbite Series.  The remaining four races will be held each Sunday in November.  Racing is around fixed marks in Hampton Roads harbor.  Yesterday racers in the PHRF A and PHRF B fleets ran a 13+ mile course with the PHRF C and PHRF Non-Spin boats going 11+ miles. Final results will be posted as soon as available at the HYC website (electronic scoring difficulties).  Series chairman - Dick Boykin; Signal Boat - Jack Pope.   For information and entry, contact Dick Boykin at (757) 890-0093.

Get on those high heel sneakers!   CCV Awards Party and Bash  is Saturday, November 5, 2011, at the Virginia Beach oceanfront at the Wyndam Oceanfront Hotel.   Awards presentations, cocktails, heavy hors d'oeuvres, free wine and beer (as long as the supply lasts), cash bar, dancing and partying until midnight.  Call the Wyndham at 1-800-365-3032 to make room ressies.  To make party ressies contact Steve Taylor at (757) 722-7861.  Remember, if you took a 2011 CCV Racing Membership, you already have one party ticket included in your membership.

Hampton University  student-sailor Giuditta Di Laghi heads to Chicago later this week to the National Women's Single-Handed Championship - do a double-handed fingers-cross for Guiditta!  This is HU's first appearance at a National Championship!

Meridian X, Sledd Shelhorse's brand new, all carbon Farr 400 is a reality.  She was at the Annapolis Boat Show earlier this month and now Sledd and the team are getting their schedule set.   Southern Bay racers will get a good look at "X"  in home waters when she sails in Down the Bay and Southern Bay Race Week 2012. Then she will be at  Screwpile in July.  First up, though, is Key West Race Week this coming January.   Meanwhile, if you go to the Farr webpage  www.farrdesign.com  you can see Meridian X modeling as a trailer-able 40 footer.

America's Cup - it's an all new game - viewing it (electronically) should be fun.  First of all, it's multihulls racing.  Second of all, the race area is restricted, forcing close quarters racing, hence lots of exciting tactics.  Third of all, they are spending tons of money on high powered electronics, both to run the races as well as to entice spectators.  There will be virtual electronic boundaries, movement of marks/mark boats will be done electronically by the principal race officer from the signal boat, skippers will have electronic warnings of approaching penalty lines, and the races, designed for the television viewing audience, will have specific time limits, probably 20 minutes per race.  This is stadium racing - elements of extreme sports racing.  It should be worth a look and may win back a lot of sailors who have given up on America's Cup.   The San Diego AC World Series runs November 12-20, 2011.  Check out www.americascup.com  to get all the details, TV dates, etc.  The AC World Series leads up to the Louis Vuitton Cup (July 4-September 1, 2013.  The America's Cup Finals is set for September 7-22, 2013, in San Francisco,

Speaking of puzzlements - Robert Cooper said, "There is no dilemma compared with that of the deep-sea diver who hears the message from the ship above, 'Come up at once. We are sinking.' "

IF you speak sailing,  thank a coach!!   And, maybe nominate him or her for one of the US SAILING Coach of the Year Awards.     US SAILING’s Olympic Sailing Committee (OSC) is seeking nominations from the public for the 2011 Coach of the Year Awards in Sailing. The OSC will select coaches in five categories: National Coach of the Year, Developmental Coach of the Year, Volunteer Coach of the Year, Paralympic Coach of the Year, and the “Doc” Counsilman Science Award. These awards are a part of the United States Olympic Committee’s (USOC) Coach Recognition Program which highlights the accomplishments and contributions of coaches who train athletes at all levels of sailing.    Nominations will be accepted from the public until November 11, 2011, via e-mail to olympics@ussailing.org.   Each nomination should include the nominee’s coaching record for 2011, any honors or recognitions the nominee has received, and a description of his or her service and support to the sport. In addition to this information, the nominator should include a phone number for both the nominator and the nominee. After nominations have been submitted, a panel designated by the OSC will evaluate each nominee’s accomplishments and submit candidates to the USOC. All awards are based on the accomplishments of the coach for the 2011 year and each nominee must currently be a coach or within one year after their retirement . http://sailingteams.ussailing.org/News/2011/Nominations_Sought_for_2011_Coach_of_the_Year.htp
