Following a highly successful launch a year ago, the Christchurch Leukemia Cup Junior Challenge Regatta returns to the water Saturday, May 4. Young sailors from nearly a dozen area high schools will be competing for racing and fundraising honors during the regatta, which will be sailed on the Rappahannock River at the Christchurch sailing facility. Christchurch sailing coach Josh Gwilliam is inviting all area high school sailors who are interested in taking part to join the fleet, “to have fun and to help support a worthy cause.” The competition will be sailed in 420s and some boats are available for teams that register early. The event is sponsored by Christchurch School, the Virginia Interscholastic Sailing Association (VISA), the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Fishing Bay Yacht Club.Following a highly successful launch a year ago, the Christchurch Leukemia Cup Junior Challenge Regatta returns to the water Saturday, May 4. The event is sponsored by Christchurch School, the Virginia Interscholastic Sailing Association (VISA), the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Fishing Bay Yacht Club. “With the level of enthusiasm and fundraising that last year’s regatta produced in honor of James Keith Hall,” says Gwilliam, “we are hoping to have an even more bountiful and exciting event this year.” Last year’s regatta raised more than $3,000.00 in the fight against leukemia, a disease which took the life of 13-year-old James Hall early last year. The top fundraising team in the regatta is awarded the James Keith Hall Memorial Trophy. Besides encouraging young sailors from all area high schools to take part, Gwilliam believes that as many as a dozen sailing teams from schools throughout the region will participate, including Christchurch, Norfolk Academy, Hampton Roads Academy, Governor’s School, Maury High School, Norfolk Collegiate, Poquoson High School, St. Christopher’s School and Walsingham Academy. Walsingham’s team, of Martha Gray, Chris Fairman, Aubrey Minor and Justin Murray won the James Keith Hall trophy a year ago. “We are looking for another wonderful event this year in hopes of supporting a very worthy cause and at the same time teaching our next generation of sailors the importance of community service and support,” says Gwilliam.
