Spring Boat Outfitting Seminar by RRYC Highlights Engine, Electrical Systems

"Preparation for spring boat outfitting of engine and electrical systems" will highlight a seminar scheduled for Saturday, March 4, 9:00 am to 3:00 at the Rappahannock River Yacht Club sponsor of the event at their Irvington clubhouse.

The seminar is open to the public and free of charge. Participants may attend either the morning session, or the afternoon session, or both. Lunch is available for $5.00 with advance notice, or participants are welcome to bring a brown bag lunch. Advance reservations are requested: call 804-438-6650, leaving name, telephone number and whether you wish to reserve lunch for $5.00 or will bring your own brown bag. The seminar is being held at the Rappahannock River Yacht Club, 100 Rappahannock Rd, Irvington.

“This is an opportunity to review and organize the many chores necessary to spring commissioning. While we will focus on topics as they relate to sailboats, powerboat owners new to these systems will certainly find the material helpful,” said seminar organizer Dick Muller. “Annual attention to these critical, and often expensive, boat systems can make the difference between reliable season-long service and unexpected difficulties,” he added. Muller, a graduate Mechanical Engineer with 50 years of off-shore and Chesapeake Bay cruising experience, will lead the Engine session beginning at 9:00 am. Topics include: engine operation, fuel systems, ratings, comparison of gas vs diesel, troubleshooting and driveline/propeller fundamentals.

The afternoon session on electrical systems, at 1:00pm will be given by Mosby West, graduate Electrical Engineer, and a sailor on the Rappahannock River and Chesapeake Bay his entire life. His topics include: electrical fundamentals, batteries, chargers, alternators and regulators, use of multimeters in troubleshooting, and wiring standards.
