Offshore Skippers - Event Registration / 2017 PHRF Certificates

Jim Raper on

Offshore Racing
This past winter, PHRF delegates from each club voted and instructed the PHRF Handicappers Board to issue 2017 PHRF ChesBay certificates with ratings for Windward/Leeward and for Circular Random (Random Leg) formats.  You will notice on your certificate that there are two ratings:  RATING (Spin/NonSpin) and CR Course RATING (Spin/NonSpin).

Fishing Bay amended its online registration to require an entry for each format, and for each rating (4 numbers) in ###/### format, matching the PHRF certificate.  2016 certificates were issued with both ratings, but the actual CR (random leg) rating may be amended for the 2017 certificates based on the handicappers' work during the off-season.

The Opening Day event is now open for registration.  …

Beginners Race Committee Training

Jim Raper on

Club News

This Saturday, April 30th at 2PM on Fanny’s Back Porch, a beginners’ Race Committee Training class will be held.  We’re using US Sailing’s, ‘Join the Race Committee Team’ pamphlet as a guide, supplemented by the other material that the club has put together over the years.  The goal is to provide enough information and handouts so that members and others who participate, understand and can fulfill each RC function before, during and after an event – with zero stress.  It’s a two-hour functional class covering each RC position and how each role fits into the overall race management objective.

PHRF Chesapeake Changes for 2015

Mayo Tabb on

Offshore Racing

PHRF of the Chesapeake recently held a meeting to discuss changes for 2015. The PHRF Rating rules for 2015 will incorporate very significant changes that will affect all PHRF racers. The most dramatic is going to dual ratings with one for Windward-Leeward courses and a second called Random-Circular which will apply to courses with a balance of windward, reaching and downwind sailing. As we know certain boats are severely handicapped for certain wind directions and the dual ratings should help address the situation. Additionally we will expand the Genoa credit to now have three categories – up to 155%, up to 140% and class One Design which will provide a credit for cruisers that use 130% Genoas.

SBR News You Can Use

SOUTHERN BAY RACE WEEK – They came. They raced. They partied.   SBRW racers gathered in Hampton for three days of competition that tested the full range of racing skills. On Friday, a lightly rainy, semi-dreary day weather-wise, they raced in Hampton Roads Harbor; on Saturday, a bright sunny, blustery day, featuring NNE breezes in the high teens and low 20s and accompanying seas, they raced one another in a distance race off Bukroe; on Sunday they squared off in multiple windward-leeward races off Ocean View, again under sunny skies with perfect, steady, racing wind. When all was said and done, Neil Ford and Lis Biondi (J24, Rocket J) won their fleet and the coveted BLACK SEAL CUP, thus proving …
