It is MARCH!  Finally - we are making progress beyond the murky darkness of  winter.  We are only 17 days away from the First Day of Spring, Friday, March 20!   So, what IS that white stuff doing here??!!

Sock Burning Time is drawing near:  This is a favorite spring ritual for racing sailors.  So, gather up the entire crew, families, children and even babies and get everyone to your club's official sock burning.   If your club does not have a sock burning ceremony, take it upon yourself to get one started.  In a pinch, a charcoal grill and a cooler of beer will do.  It is imperative that southern Bay racers officially burn their socks during March - the racing deities demand it!

The "Big Red Boat", Sanford and Alex Richardson's KAHUNA (Farr 395)  has entered the DOWN THE BAY RACE for the Virginia Cruising Cup.  Kahuna currently sails out of Annapolis Yacht Club, but has spent many years on the southern Chesapeake racing scene and maintains ties there.  Martin Casey has entered his Catalina 27, BOWMOVEMENT in DTB.  Martin will be sailing out of  Willoughby Bay in Norfolk., and is a Broad Bay Sailing Association member.  For info on DTB check out  the Hampton YC (event headquarters) website at www.hamptonyc.com and click on the DTB logo, or contact  co-chairmen of the event  Vince Behm (757) 876-7778 or Wayne Bretsch (301) 332-6773.

CCV Rules Clinic and 2009 Racing Guide Distribution -  The annual CCV spring gathering comes a bit earlier than usual  this year.  On Tuesday, March 31, 6:30pm,  CCV  will hold their annual Rules Clinic at the Mariners Museum (Newport News, Virginia).   At this gathering, CCV members will receive the  2009 CCV Racing Guide.  The Guide is included in the price of the membership.  CCV will take membership applications at this clinic.  The clinic is OPEN TO ALL and it is FREE!  For information contact:  Tom Peddy at (757)638-3358

SOUTHERN BAY RACE WEEK update -  The Soverel 33, MIDNIGHT RIDER, owned and skippered by John Haracivet, sailing out of York River Yacht Club, is returning to SBRW.  The Gloucesterman will be racing in PHRF A.   And, the Tripp 38, VOODOO 2,  a PHRF A boat, is back in the hunt for the Black Seal Cup.    Leroi Lissenden and Scott Birch have combined their efforts for 2009.   For info on SBRW 2009 check out the website at www.blacksealcup.com, visit the Hampton YC (event headquarters) website at www.hamptonyc.com and click on the SBRW logo, or contact Lin McCarthy at (757) 850-4225, email mcbear@earthlink.net

Buzzzzzzzzzz continues regarding competition for the Down the Bay Race record.  The record was set in 1974 by RUNNING TIDE, a 60-footer designed by Sparkman and Stevens and owned by Al van Metre.   The race is 120 miles non-stop from Annapolis to Hampton.  Legend has it that Running Tide holds the fastest finish time and that it was "around thirteen (13) hours".  The written records have not been found.

MURPHY'S LAW:   Sock Burning Day is one of best days in a racer's life.  Gettin' those covers off the feet and gettin' the paws limbered up for action is reassurance that the first race of the season is very near.  It's a grand moment - let those toes breatheeeeeeeeeeeee!   /S/  Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
