St Petersburg NOODSix southern Bay boats went to St Petersburg to race in the National Offshore One Design Regatta this past weekend.  Two finished in the money.  Noel Clinard (Fishing Bay Yacht Club, Deltaville) was 3rd in the 10 boat Sonar class. Prophet had a two day string of 5-6-3-3.   The was no racing in St Pete on Saturday - no wind.  Mike Evans (Blackbeard Sailing Club, New Bern) placed 2nd in the 12 boat San Juan 21 fleet.  Mike's Second Joyride had a 3rd and a 2nd in the two races his class completed.  Also racing in the San Juan 21 class were: Bill McClure (FBYC) Thistledowne 4th (4-7);   Mike Chesser (FBYC), Scuba Kat, 6th (10-4);     Doug Longhini (BbSC), Kanga, 7th (12-3);    Mike Robinson (Lake Norman YC), Ragtop, 10th (5-16/dnf).  
  
Ullman Sailing Seminar a hit in Richmond.  More than 100 racers attended the Ullman racing seminar in Richmond last Wednesday.  Fishing Bay Yacht Club hosted the event and proceeds went to the FBYC junior program.  Those who attended gathered  racing info and special tid-bits presented by the panel of exceptional racers headed by Dave Ullman.  One nugget that everyone on the panel agreed upon was PREDICTWIND as a very good wind/weather prediction service.  Google it and see what you think. CBYRA Junior Division Race Committee of the Year - Junior Olympics - Bay Open Regatta hosted by Hampton Yacht Club.    CBYRA has announced the Junior Division Race Committee of the Year for 2011.  The honored race committee team ran the on-the water aspects of the 2011 regatta held in July  in Hampton, Virginia.  More than twenty (20+) race committee members supported the event as part of the team led by  Event Principal Race Officer (and Opti Course) - John McCarthy;   Laser Radials and 420s Course Race Officer - Brian Deibler;    Green Fleet Race Officer - Mark Newman; and, Safety Boats Chairman - Doug Amthor.   The overall event chairman was Malcolm Brady.   
  
WIN A RIDE ON THE COAST GUARD TALL SHIP  EAGLE  during OpSail.  This is an ESSAY and ART contest for high school students.  The topics all relate to the Star-Spangled Banner and/or the War of 1812.  For details on the essay topics and requirements, go to opsail2012-essay@opsail.org  and for the art contest go to opsail2012-art@opsail.org   The contests are open to "students enrolled in public, parochial or private high schools and who will be at  least 12 years old"  by the date of OpSail.  The US Coast Guard, the US Navy, the National Maritime Historical Society, and the USS Constitution Museum have pulled together to sponsor this contest (one winner in each of the 6 OpSail ports).

**March 24, 2012 -  NUTS AND BOLTS OF RACE COMMITTEE - Emphasis on Starting and Finishing Races.  OPEN TO ALL.  0900 - 1200  at Hampton Yacht Club. This is a great clinic for Race Committee teams, volunteers, and anyone else interested in getting the basics down.  This is a practical clinic - good for newbies as well as a refresher for race committee regulars.  There is NO CHARGE for this clinic and coffee, pastries, and other refreshments are included.  The clinic will be led by area race management officials John McCarthy, Buk Lawrence, and Lin McCarthy.  Please do  PRE-REGISTER, since space is limited - call or email to reserve your spot - (757) 850-4225 or mcbear@earthlink.net   Hampton Yacht Club and CCV are co-sponsors of this clinic.

  
**March 27, 2012 - CCV Annual Racing Guide Distribution  and Racing Clinic - (OPEN TO ALL) - no charge - The Racing Guide is included in a CCV membership.  Purchase a membership at the clinic, if you have not already.  CCV is planning to invite well known rules guru and southern Bay expatriate Rob Overton to conduct the clinic which will be held at Hampton Yacht Club.  Reservations are not required.  For info contact Bob Thomas at 757-898-9407.
