LABOR DAY WEEKEND IS ONLY 10 DAYS OUT!

LOTS OF CHOICES.  YA GOTTA REGATTA!

Among the choices:

STINGRAY POINT REGATTA (Fri, Aug 30 – Sun, Sep 1) - Opens with distance race (scored separately from Saturday and Sunday racing) on Friday August 30th in Deltaville.  Two days of round-the-buoy racing on Saturday and Sunday.  For info, details, and to enter go to www.fbyc.net and click on the event listing. Organizing Authority is Fishing Bay Yacht Club.  In a setting that borders on charmingly rural and has all the additional niceties of the FBYC facilities, including water access to both Jackson Creek and Fishing Bay proper, a cozy waterfront swimming pool, and plenty of room on the surrounding grounds to stretch race-cramped legs, to fold sails, and to socialize!  It’s a very special regatta setting, and within easy reach by any southern Bay raceboat.  Also, Stingray organizers have left Monday of the holiday weekend open for deliveries home and/or family commitments.

CBYRA ANNAPOLIS RACE WEEK (Sat, Aug 31 – Mon, Sep 2) – Opens Saturday, Aug 31tst, with racing through Monday, Sept 2nd in Annapolis. Click on www.cbyra.org  for info on the event and how to enter. There are options regarding purchasing party tent drink tickets in advance.  The website info explains the choices.  This event is a racing holiday weekend bonanza!

DINK VAIL REGATTA (Sun, Sep 1) – Racing is on Sunday only, September 1st, in Hampton Roads/Norfolk.  The start/finish will be in the vicinity of Norfolk Harbor Reach, R “10”.  The course will be laid out in the area between the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel and the Monitor Merrimac Bridge Tunnel. This race is part of the BBSA administered Southern Bay Distance Racing Series and counts in the CBYRA High Point standings.  NYCC hosts a Welcome Reception and Skippers Meeting, on Saturday at 1830 in the Skippers’ Lounge. Noel Clinard and Mike Massey raced in the Rhodes 19 one design fleet at Nantucket Race Week this past week.  Noel and Mike finished 3rd overall in  the 8 races in the 14 boat fleet, one point behind the 2nd place boat.  Kudos!

10th Annual CAPE CHARLES CUP – Phil Briggs FEATHER takes 3rd consecutive PHRF Division top honor;  Jim Beaudry BLACK DOG wins the top Cruising Division honor.  The Cape Charles Cups are awarded to the boats (one in PHRF and one in Cruising) with the best total corrected time for both races of the event.  Cape Charles Cup racers got in both distance races this year – Saturday, Little Creek to Cape Charles and Sunday, Cape Charles to Hampton.  On Saturday the fleet battled steep waves and stiff NNE winds in the mid to high teens with some gusts in the 20s.  Sunday brought much better conditions, although intermittent showers and fog kept things interesting.  A total of 73 boats entered CCCup, 28 racing in PHRF classes, 43 in Cruising and 2 in the Multihull division.  The two races, 18.0 nm and 18.90nm, are scored individually for CBYRA High Point standings.  CAPE CHARLES CUP TROPHIES STANDINGS: PHRF DIVISION: Winner: Feather, J36,  Phil Briggs (HYC) 5:30:12 (1,4);  2.Wairere, Thompson 30, Pete Hunter  5:32:33 (4,1);   3.Rumble, J29, Ben Weeks and Michele Cochran (HYC) 5:37:04 (1,3);  4. Southern Bay racers will remember Jonathan Phillips, who a couple of years back raced the red Kirby 25, Fine, in our PHRF C fleet. Jonathan has moved back to Annapolis, sold the Kirby,  and now is racing Lasers and sometimes on a 505.  He emailed that he and Bethany also have started campaigning a J22. He is a member of Severn Sailing Association, so, if you are up that way look him up.  Pete Wallio (Hampton) and the crew of Not So Blue have been part of a lot of the Annapolis J22 weekend action, too.

Recently returned from the Far Side.  Tom and Gay LaRue Wood were over on the West Coast and got to see the America’s Cup AC72s practice.  Tom said it was “…unbelievable speed!”.  Tom and Gay are back home in Hampton by now, so you can get the full story from them first hand.
