FBYC Again Invited to Premiere NYYC Event

2010icqualifingseries12The New York Yacht Club has invited FBYC to compete in the 2012 U.S. Qualifying Series (“USQS”) for the 2013 Invitational Cup (“IC”). This is the second time we have been invited to this premiere event. In 2010, the Club Team of Travis Weisleder, Rob Whittemore, Lud Kimbrough and Ben Buhl brought us honor by finishing in the top ten finalist round of the USQS. It is an extraordinary recognition of FBYC for us to be re-invited to the most prestigious event in amateur Corinthian yachting.

The USQS will continue the format in which U.S. teams compete in two fleets of one-design keelboats, as they vie to be one of only three domestic yacht clubs to compete in the Swan 42 with about 20 clubs from 14 nations in the 2013 IC. Unlike the 2010 USQS, in which the boats were the J/22 and Sonar, in 2012, the new J Boat J/70 will be featured with the Sonar when, as NYYC says, “24 of the nation’s most competitive yacht clubs compete” off Newport, RI from September 4 to 8. The top three finishers will earn the right to compete in Swan 42s in the 2013 IC presented by Rolex.

J70

The new J/70 is a trailer launched, lifting bulb keel, bowsprit sport boat. According to the NYYC, “by utilizing the J/70, a modern high-performance planing keelboat 22.7’ in length with an asymmetrical spinnaker – along with the 23’ Sonar with its symmetrical spinnaker -- the NYYC is raising the bar for competitors by testing their versatility across different boat designs as well as allowing the final decision to be made in a boat closer in philosophy to the NYYC Swan 42 -- the yacht used in the international event.”

In the crossing photo from 2010 above, you can see " . . . . ing Bay" on the sail of Sonar #12. In our main clubhouse bar, you can see another picture with the full "Fishing Bay" sail beating upwind against Annapolis and Eastern YCs. Such press coverage of the upcoming event should redound mightily to the benefit of FBYC's reputation, prestige and membership recruiting.

More information on the 2012 FBYC Campaign will be forthcoming. Be sure to follow our campaign facebook page for the latest updates. In the interim, visit these sites for more information, video and photos of the USQS and the IC events:
