FBYC Junior Race Teams Take to the Road!

Keith B Hennessey on Tuesday July 8, 2014 01:15AM

Your Junior Race Teams have not been idle since the end of Junior Week.  Beginning  the day after its conclusion, the teams competed at 6 different regattas at 6 different clubs on the Bay in a total of 12 days!  We have a record 45 kids total-12 on the Opti Development Team, 12 on the Laser Race Team, and 21 on the Opti Race Team!

After the Commonwealth, the Opti Development Team stayed home to practice, while the Opti Race Team and Laser Race Team hit the road.  First up after the Commonwealth on June 21-22 was the Rock Hall Yacht Club Annual Junior Regatta in Rock Hall, Maryland; followed by the Tred Avon Yacht Club Annual Junior Regatta in Oxford, Maryland; the Maryland State Championships at West River Sailing Club in Galesville, Maryland; Annapolis Yacht Club Junior Regatta in Annapolis, and finally, the Sandy MacVickar Memorial Annual Regatta hosted by the Severn Sailing Association in Annapolis on July 2.

We averaged 30 juniors at each away regatta, which meant 5 transport trailers moving the Optis and Lasers to each club and event, 3 coach boats, and 6 different hotels for an average of 63 people!  The logistics of moving the equipment and the kids and coaches, getting fuel, lunches and water, and launching and registrations at each event was a nightmare!  Thank you to the team coordinators: Michelle Hayes, AL Braun, and Mary Almany who organized it all and kept the wheels on the bus!

In addition to the racing and days on the road, our sailors managed to slip in a trip to the ballpark in Baltimore to see the Orioles play, and a trip to a Go-Kart track near Annapolis.  Its not all work!

But the effort was worth it: FBYC excelled.  We placed sailors in every regatta and every class.  Remarkably,  Alexander Hanna won every regatta in the Laser Class until the final regatta at SSA, meaning that he is both the 2014 Virginia and Maryland State Champion.  Benton Amthor won outright three of the regattas in the Opti Class, including the Virginia Championship, and placed in the remaining three.  In addition, we dominated in every class in both Optis and Lasers across the board.  See below for the details.  FBYC sailors took 73 of the 150 top five positions combined (Laser, Opti Red, Opti Blue, Opti White) in all divisions of the 6 regattas with a combined total registration of 469 Lasers and Optis.

This week the Laser Race Team caravans to Cape May, New Jersey for the Chubb Championship, and the Opti Development Team and the Opti Race Team travel to Hampton for their junior regatta.  Keep them-and Michelle, AL and Mary-in your thoughts!
