Smith Point Race: Just Right

Doug Anderson on Monday August 26, 2013 12:45PM

Over the years the Smith Point Race has provided a range of weather conditions, but none better than this year's "Goldie Locks" presentation.  The winds were just right, the temp and humidity were just right, the rain squalls were just right--they went around us, and the sunset was absolutely just right, as the photos show.

The 3 course options took the fleets on a variety of paths to Smith Point.  The A & B fleets sailed a close reach across the bay to the cut channel before going north (58nm).  The C fleet took a slightly less out of the way route (42mn)  while the non-spin fleet took a direct route (32nm).

Each fleet had close racing.  In A it was Chilcoot narrowly beating out Corryvreckan by just a minute over the line and on corrected time.  In B the sailing was close between Neried, Shenanigan and Mad Hatter, but it was the Hatter that would prevail on corrected time beating out the A boats too.   The PHRF-C fleet had a close match between Catitude and Schiehallion with the former winning on corrected time by just 3 minutes.

The Non-Spin fleet saw some of the best conditions we've had for any race this year.  It was a quick race with the first boat, Red Sky, finishing the 33 mile course in approximately 6 hrs. and 6 minutes.

The Sunday morning brunch of crab omelets was the just right (read, fabulous) ending to a wonderful long distance race.  Thanks again to PRO Case Whittemore and his crew along with the Cheeky Monkey team for breakfast.
