What Are those Junior Sailors up to now?

We have had a great start to the sailing season for our junior race team sailors.  Under wonderful coaching from our three returning coaches from Argentina:  Tommy Dietrich, Tom Peligero and Francisco Renna our Race teams have grown once again to include for the first time a 420 Race team.

The season started with junior week which was a great success followed by our Annual Junior Regatta.  The team’s right out of the gate did a fabulous job with Boyd Bragg taking first in 420’s, Madeline Amthor first overall in Opti is with Josh Bendura a close second.  We had five of the top 10 spots for Opti is overall including John Vail, Reed McAllister and Bo Angus.  The lasers did fairly well with Ian Street and Jordan Bendura in the top 10.

Next, stop Hampton and Norfolk for racing including the Virginia Commonwealth at NYCC.  After a couple mishaps, the teams did fairly well and we even had some of the ODT join for the races. Lasers took the two of the top three spots.

After a well-needed break for 4 July, they were off again heading for Annapolis to sail at AYC and SSA.  The weather proved to be challenging especially at AYC when a storm came rolling in soaking the sailors and flooding boats almost quicker than they could get them pulled.  After a tough couple of days and decent wins the were once again heading for home.  With on shore practice and chalk talk they took the time to go over mistakes and see where to improve.

Monday they were on the road again.  As the Opti and Laser Race teams headed for Rock Hall to race most of the 420-race team was making the treak to Canada where they will race most of July and part of August as well as New England States.

Rock hall was good for the Optiteam.  They took the top two spots and most of the top 10.  Lasers did pretty well.  Next onto Tayc for the clinic run partially by our own coaches and then the two-day sailing in the junior sailing Olympics.  As you can see, Tommy and Reed took first and 3rd for the blue fleet.  Guthrie took first overall and first in Red Fleet.  The Opti’s took five of the top 10 spots.  The lasers took four of the top 10 spots with the rest not far behind.

It been a good start to the season and certainly a busy one.  More to come in the next month and a half with trips for Nationals for the Opti team to Team Racing and individual racing while the lasers head north for Hyannis.  GO FBYC Junior Sailing!
