On August 24, the new and growing J70 Fleet held its first group Fun Sail and Social. Celebrating the arrival of 3 new boats for David Hinckle, Mike Karn and Walter Bundy, bringing the Fleet to six boats, the Fleet sailed several Windwar-Leewards on a course set by the Sea-craft in the Piankatank mouth while the larger offshore boats sailed a long distance race. The social was hosted by Dave Malkin, the dealer from North Point Yacht Sales of Annapolis who has sold all our boats. The following day many of us joined the long distance brunch. Nice events like this will ensure continuing fleet growth. Who's next?

Smith Point Race: Just Right

Doug Anderson on

Offshore Racing

Over the years the Smith Point Race has provided a range of weather conditions, but none better than this year's "Goldie Locks" presentation.  The winds were just right, the temp and humidity were just right, the rain squalls were just right--they went around us, and the sunset was absolutely just right, as the photos show.

The 3 course options took the fleets on a variety of paths to Smith Point.  The A & B fleets sailed a close reach across the bay to the cut channel before going north (58nm).  The C fleet took a slightly less out of the way route (42mn)  while the non-spin fleet took a direct route (32nm).

Attention offshore fleet…

This Saturday, August 24th, is the annual Smith Point race. Last year's race was a great beat up and reach back. The first warning is at 1400 and the full notice of race can be found here.

In addition to a great race, what better way to recount the events of the early morning hours then with a 5 star brunch on Sunday morning at 1000 prepared by FBYC’s very own Cheeky Monkey crew? The menu once again features:

  • Made to order crabmeat omelets
  • Made to order western style omelets
  • Shrimp and grits
  • Chesapeake style Bloody Mary’s

Cost is $7 a head and worth every penny.

And last, but not least, we will be inducting …

Jon Deutsch on

One Design Racing

Saturday's racing was all they wrote for the 2013 Annual One Design Regatta with mother nature not cooperating with enough wind to race on Sunday.  Trent Levy in the Optimist Class won the prestigous John R. Hawksworth Memorial Trophy as the winner of the most competitive fleet in the regatta.

While the Optis got in 3 races, boats on the other 3 courses were only able to race the two races on Saturday.
