"For much of the year, I live on the Chesapeake Bay. The view from our house on Stove Point is unencumbered by land—just a jut of Gwynn Island to the right and Stingray Point to the left. In the distance almost directly in front of the house is Marker Number 6, a small black channel marker that blinks a red light at night. This marker is a beacon—a constant in an expanse of ever-changing light, wind, and color. Several years ago I decided to take a photo of this panorama every morning at dawn. While undertaking this project, I found that my long-time fascination with observing water and weather and sky turned into a …

Boat US update on GPS regs

Strother Scott on

Club News

As a result of a new proposal to use radio bandwidth right next to the existing GPS service, the future reliability of the GPS system across the United States is now in question.  We encourage you to contact the FCC during a short 30-day public comment period, to help them understand the public’s need for continued, reliable GPS signals for safe navigation on boats, in cars, and for so many other daily uses.

Background:  Earlier this year, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) gave conditional approval to a private company, LightSquared, to begin a nationwide broadband service adjacent to the radio spectrum used for GPS.  After concerns from user groups (including BoatU.S.), the …

Great Interview with Will Crump on North Sails J80 page.

http://www.onedesign.com/class/j80/2011-AnnapolisNOOD-byMichaelLovett.jpgThe J80 team of Thomas Klok, Scott Collins, Will and Marie Crump topped the deep 29 boat fleet with style, speed and patience.  I was able to catch up with my old friend Will Crump to get an update on their team and how things have progressed in the last year.  With only a couple of events under their belts they seem to be just hitting their stride!

What do you feel were the big keys to your win at the Annapolis NOOD regatta?
Will: We really looked at the fleet and the race area with a great deal of respect. Despite speed in past regattas, we never …

oldsailor5.jpgThe most anticipated event of the summer is just around the corner for the Club’s sexagenarian set. (For the clueless, this means 60 years old and over and has absolutely nothing whatever to do with ‘sex.’) The ranks of Club membership are swelling with a growing number of candidates for the Geezer Regatta on August 27…that’s just one week before the big Stingray Regatta over Labor Day weekend.

Being a brand new event for FBYC and wishing to host a big bash on Saturday night for participants and their friends, we need a headcount fast to determine our food and beverage and trophy requirements for this first annual regatta designed specifically for us older folks.

Leukemia Cup Experiences an Active Weekend in Deltaville

The 13th Annual Southern Chesapeake Leukemia Cup Regatta held in Deltaville over the weekend of July 8-10 was another huge success with 77 registered yachts and enthusiastic crowds at the Auction and Gala helping to raise $112,000 in cash and $20,000 in kind donations, based on preliminary numbers, to support patients with blood cancers.

Typically the Southern Chesapeake Leukemia Cup Regatta is one of the most financially successful Leukemia Cup Regattas in the country in spite of being one of the smallest of such national venues. And tornado …

Fishing Bay Yacht Club was proud to participate in the Deltaville Heritage Day Parade on Saturday, July 2nd.   Approximately 16 FBYC members turned out to represent our club; the kids had a blast throwing candy to the throngs of spectators lining Chesty Puller's highway. With a Laser focus and traditional 4th of July decorations, the parents and kids all helped to produce a stunning float.

On Sunday, the club held its first annual Family Fun Day.  The day started with a non-traditional race.  The kids began on land and sprinted to their rigged Opti’s and lasers on the beach.  The sailing instructions called for a figure 8 course to be sailed. To finish …

On the whole, 8 skippers participated in the Front Runner series and the Flying Scot fleet saw 17 different skippers on the line. It was a fun series with a variety of conditions that challenged the sailors and the race committees. The Front Runner fleet series champion is Matt Braun followed by Mark Stephens and Kevin Cross. In the Flying Scot fleet, Len Guenther won the series followed by John Beery, Noel Clinard and Rob Whittemore. Complete series results are posted at …
