Taking a look at
Key West Results
shows that our own Mike Karn and crew on Insatiable are tied for second place in PHRF-Class 7 after five races at Key West Race Week.
Word is that among the crew are our Commodore Jay Buhl and our Treasurer, Paul Howle. We will be checking in and looking for the pictures soon.
There are 2 Virginia and 6 North Carolina
homeported boats at Key West Race Week: Mike
Karn's G&S 27, Insatiable, (Deltaville) and
Sanford Richardson's Farr 395, Kahuna (Hampton)
make up the small Virginia contingent. Registered from the Tarheel
state are Walter Kennedy's Henderson 30, Savannah;
Lloyd Griffin's Hadley 40, Cash Flow;
McAllister and Silver's JS 9000, A Lil Tipsy;
Peter Hunter's Thompson 30, Wairere; the Robin
Team J/80 Sweet Baby J; and Worth Harris'
J/105, Rum at Six. From a "sort of reliable" source (the
check-in parties had begun) comes a report (unconfirmed) that Cash
Flow suffered some hurt during transport (via land) and that repairs
were being assessed. Keep your fingers crossed …

FBYC member Parke Smith, of Weapons Company (3rd Battalian - 4th Marines) has been dispatched for his second deployment in Iraq. Parke has helped out countless times with Race Committee and other FBYC duties, and was sorely missed last summer while he was in Iraq.
We can do two things for Parke's Company, which is dreadfully short on the supplies they need. First, we can help them buy the supplies they need by contributing to SuppliedToSurvive, a Texas organization started by the father of one of the men in Parke's company. Contributions made to Supplied To Survive may be sent via FBYC member Preston Smith or directly to 317 S FRIENDSWOOD DRIVE, FRIENDSWOOD , TX 775465, Phone: (281) 992-1500, Toll …
Kudos to
Southern Bay Junior Programs: Just nice to note that the southern
Bay is hosting significant USODA (Opti) events. How about this: The
second USODA National Championship in the southern Chesapeake
will be hosted this coming July at Norfolk Yacht and Country Club. The
first was hosted by Hampton Yacht Club when the 1999 Opti Nationals were sailed
right off Strawberry Banks. And, Fishing Bay Yacht Club, just this past
October, hosted the Atlantic Coast Championships for the
Optis. Three major events in 6 years - not bad! Kudos to all those
parents, friends and hard working volunteers who are steering our southern Bay …

The schooner Virginia
was launched and christened last week in Norfolk. A heart
warming presence among the notables attending was Gary
Jobson, one of the special invited guests at the christening.
Also, adding special words and thoughts at the christening was Bill
Pinkney, former Master of the Amistad
America. There were several local racers at the christening
Friday, including, but not limited to, Larry Bryant, Don Wade, Ben
Cuker, and Thom Thornton. And, of course
Governor Mark Warner and his wife, Lisa Collis, who actually christened the
Virginia, were top officials in attendance.
Racers' Financial
Advisory: Keep in mind that the beginning of the year is when you
want to get your 2005 dues and fees …
Schooner Virginia
christening set for this Friday, December 10, 11:45 am, Otter
Berth, next to Waterside at downtown Norfolk. The
Virginia has been under construction for just over two years, but the
progress from dream to vision to reality has taken a lot longer than that.
NOW SHE IS REAL. Governor Mark Warner and the State's First Lady Lisa
Collis will be in Norfolk along with Gary Jobson and Capt. Bill
Pinkney. You need to be at this historic event too. The
christening will be a traditional ceremony. There will be exhibits and
demonstrations Friday and Saturday. Visit our schooner. For detailed
info check the web site at www.schoonervirginia.org or call …

or part of the annual Frostbite …
Last year we had excellent participation and with some new blood this year we should do better. As many of you know this is a great venue and with the new facilities nearing completion I am sure this could be one of the best events yet. DIYC in Tampa, Florida, advises that they will be hosting the annual Fireball event, I would like to find out from the Frontrunner Fleet how many will be interested in attending March 4,5, & 6, 2005. As of now there are several that have voiced interest. It is time to get a better idea of who is going so that I can inform Davis Island Yacht Club of our intentions.

For the second year in a row, at the Leukemia and Lymphoma's National Leadership conference in Denver, Colorado, the Southern Bay Leukemia Cup Regatta, was named as one of the top six regattas in the country.
I was fortunate enough to be attending this conference and accept this award. There are 47 Regattas around the country. The Regattas are put in six regions, and the best Regatta in each region gets the award. We were competing with some very LARGE Yacht clubs!!!
Our regatta grossed $188,000 last year. An amazing amount for a small town and yacht club on the Chesapeake Bay!!!
I was constantly asked at the conference how a small yacht club and town, managed to …
