“All we can speculate is that one of those rogue waves crashed down us,” Piersol said as he sat and sipped coffee. “It broke on top of the boat and completely smashed the boat down into the water. Blew out the portholes on the low side. Took everything. It was a violent smashing. Wasn’t like a gentle, oh-my-gosh-we’re-rolling-over. It was, wham!
“Next thing you know, you’re rolling over and upside-down and water’s pouring over you. It took the boat over on its side and …
According to a recent article in the Southside Sentinal, authored by Tom Chillemi, "the Middlesex Water Authority (MWA) voted on July 31 to accept a $3 million grant and a 2% interest rate loan from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The funding moves the $18 million Eastern Middlesex Water Project forward with the plan to pipe water from Rosegill near Urbanna to Topping and as far east as Stingray Point in Deltaville.
The MWA is an “authority” and is separate from the Middlesex government, and as an authority the customers would pay for the water system. The MWA will have 517 water customers, which is enough to pass scrutiny of the USDA’s regional office.

Recently I received word that an old Richmond friend, Bill Westbrook, was retiring and returning to Irvington, Virginia where he had planted deep roots in the past. After briefly being sold out due to great registration response, we were able to secure more boats and 25 enthusiastic ladies attended the women’s sailing clinic! The group was comprised of 15 beginners and 9 racing students in a mix of Flying Scots, Front Runners, 420s, and even a Laser!
Lots of members took advantage of the clinic offered free as a membership benefit, as two-thirds of the group were members.
The beginner students enjoyed an instructor on each boat for hands-on learning and focused on helming, tacking, and trimming the main and jib. The racing students focused on starts, crew work, and sail trim.
About half of the ladies participated in the Seabreeze Regatta that afternoon to extend their …

Come and join your fellow FBYC women sailors in our "Second Annual Women Only Sailing Weekend" September 23-24, 2017. We will hope to call up the same great food, fantastic weather and inspiring companionship that magically came together last fall. Look who is making One Design great again! Last month, while competing at the Flying Scot Nationals in Sandusky, Ohio, John Wake sailed as crew for John Aras of Annapolis. They ended the regatta in an astonishing fifth position. Meanwhile, at the same event with 68 boats competing, husband and wife team, Len and Barb Guenther, finished in twelfth spot. Well done team FBYC! It looks like One Design is already great!
On another note, more recently, a number of sailors have been concerned about boats rushing in to the mark roundings at the last second and hacking into boats. This Rushin’ Hacking, as it is called, is of grave concern and threatens the foundation of our program. For …
