Day 1, Friday, August 16th, depart for Old Point Comfort Marina (Ft. Monroe), 35.4 NM. Dock Master, 757-788-4308.
Day 2, August 17th, explore the Casemate Museum and the fort, dating back to Christopher Newport’s exploration of the Bay in 1607. Outdoor options include a stroll through the nature trails or the beaches along the Bay. Later that day we depart for a sail of 17.3 NM to Smithfield Station, 5 NM up the Pagan River, off the South shore of the James River. Smithfield Station phone, 877-703-7701.
Day 3, Sunday, August 18th, is a lay day, AM explore Smithfield. First colonized in 1634, in 1752 it was established as a seaport and is now variously referred to as the ham capital or peanut capital of the world. Its historic district is a major attraction and walkable, featuring more than 70 properties from the Colonial, Federal, and Victorian periods. Later that day we visit the Mariners Museum in Newport News, crossing the river by van. It’s one of the largest maritime museums in North America, and features the Oracle Team USA 17, the yacht that won the 34th America’s Cup in 2013.
Day 4, Monday, August 19th, we begin our return to Deltaville, stopping first at Salt Ponds, 21.7 NM (Dock Master 757-850-4300) on the first leg.
Day 5, Tuesday, August 20th, return to Deltaville for the second leg, 31 NM.
